Report: Russia turning its back on Syrian regime, not honoring prior agreements

For three months Moscow has been reducing its diplomatic staff in Damascus to essential personnel exclusively and the most recent move saw 100 Russians, along with their families, board a plane.

Russia may be sensing an imminent shift against Syrian President Bashar Assad, removing its advisers and other strategic personnel from the war torn country.

"The Kremlin has begun to turn away from the regime," the London-based Arabic newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported on Sunday, quoting an opposition official.

According to the report, for three months Moscow has been reducing its diplomatic staff in Damascus to essential personnel exclusively and the most recent move saw 100 Russians, along with their families, board a plane at the Latakia airport. Lebanese figures belonging to Hezbollah, as well as Iranian officials, were also said to be aboard the flight. According to the report, none of the personnel, main-stays of the government's War-Room throughout the civil war, have been replaced.

The opposition source also informed the Saudi-backed, London newspaper that the Russians have stopped honoring an agreement with the Syrian regime to ensure the maintenance of its Russian made Sukhoi aircraft, a strategic element of Syria's air force that has been an important technical edge in the fight against the rebels.

The sudden halt prompted a visit by Syrian Defense Minister Fahd Jassem al-Freij to Tehran, who asked Iran to address Russia and request that they reconsider such a move.

Asked as to the future of the Syrian state at a meeting of Western security agencies last month, the head of the Russian delegation gave an answer that seemingly marks a change in the Kremlin's interests, suggesting that rather than ensuring Assad's rule, which has been Moscow's refrain since the civil war broke out in 2011, "What matters to Russia is maintaining its strategic interests and ensuring the future of the minorities, the unity of Syria and the struggle against extremists."

The scale-down of its relationship with the Assad regime comes in light of the dramatic gains made by the Islamic State group who, after pushing government forces from the Eastern city of Palmyra, is estimated to be in control of 50% of Syria's territory. Meanwhile, in the north, Jaish al-Fatah, a coalition spanning various factions opposed to the Assad regime, has recently driven out government forces from the Idlib Province.

Yet the report also highlights the ongoing crisis in Ukraine as a potential factor for Moscow's abandoning of Damascus. Amid the increased political pressure on Russia to halt its support for rebels in Eastern Ukraine, Russia may be implicitly offering the West a transition in Syria as a trade-off for the loosening of the sanctions strangling its economy.

"The past is not my concern. The future is no longer my concern either. One minute. One minute of everything at once. And anything before is nothing. Everything after nothing. Nothing in comparison to that one minute."

The Syrians like the Iranians put too much faith in Russia, not much different than the Afg gov'ts of the 80s.

The advancement of the Iranian nuclear program was in my opinion halted by Russia's reluctance to honor the agreement to sell Iran their sophisticated anti aircraft missile system. That on top of crippling sanctions against Iran and now Russia has made them both back down.

Russia is strong and powerful but it is not the US and it is willing to cut off an ally to save its own ass.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

REVEALED: Staggering pictures show Russia's military build up in war-torn Syria

THESE staggering images show just how much Russia's military presence has grown in Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's heartland.

There has been a growing Russian military presence in Syria

Vladimir Putin's Government is understood to be handing out new types of air and ground weapons to soldiers in the war-torn country, amid growing concerns of Moscow's deepening support to Damascus.

Sources say Russia has set up an air traffic control tower and transported prefabricated housing units for up to 1,000 personnel to an airfield serving the Syrian port of Latakia.

A source said: "The weapons are highly effective and very accurate, and hit targets precisely.

"We can say they are all types of weapons, be it air or ground."

Members of the Syrian army have been trained in the use of the weapons in recent months and are now deploying them, according to reports.

The claims are set to ratchet up tensions between Moscow and Washington over the future of Syria and its brutal ruler.

The weapons are highly effective and very accurate, and hit targets precisely
Amid fears Russia is planning to expand its role in the country's raging civil war, President Barack Obama met with King Salman of Saudi Arabia last Friday to repeat their demand that any lasting settlement in Syria would require an end to the Assad regime.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has also contacted Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in a bid to clarify the intent of Moscow's military build up.

Mr Kerry warned that continued support for Assad's regime "risks exacerbating and extending the conflict".

Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem confirmed Russia had provided new weapons and trained the country's troops in how to use them, without saying when or naming any specific systems.

Mr al-Moualem told state television that the Government would be prepared to go further and ask Russian forces to fight alongside its troops if needed - though he said there were no such soldiers there now.

But Russia - Assad's ally in the four-year civil war - claims its military support for Damascus is aimed at fighting the rise of barbaric jihadists Islamic State (ISIS) and safeguarding Syria's statehood to prevent a "total catastrophe" in the region.

The images emerged as Putin gave his strongest admission yet that Russia was already providing some military and logistical support to Syria.

He said: "We are already giving Syria quite serious help with equipment and training soldiers, with our weapons."

The United States, along with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, have supported insurgents battling to unseat Assad, whose foreign military backing has so far come mostly from Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.

But as a US-led coalition targets Islamic State terrorists in Syria and Iraq, the prospects of a potential clash between the US and Russian air forces look ominous.

THESE staggering images show just how much Russia's military presence has grown in Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's heartland.

Exclusive: Syrian army starts using new weapons from Russia - military source

The Syrian military has recently started using new types of air and ground weapons supplied by Russia, a Syrian military source told Reuters on Thursday, underlining growing Russian support for Damascus that is alarming the United States.

"The weapons are highly effective and very accurate, and hit targets precisely," the source said in response to a question about Russian support. "We can say they are all types of weapons, be it air or ground."

The source said the army had been trained in the use of the weapons in recent months and was now deploying them, declining to give further details other than saying they were "new types."

Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said on Thursday Russia had provided new weapons and trained Syrian troops how to use them, without saying when or naming any specific systems.

He told state television the government would be prepared to go further and ask Russian forces to fight alongside its troops if needed - though he said there were no such soldiers there now.

The Russian government said on Thursday its military support for Damascus was aimed at fighting terrorism, safeguarding Syria's statehood and preventing a "total catastrophe" in the region.

It includes a larger Russian military presence on the ground in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad has faced increased pressure this year from rebels fighting to topple him, but its full scope and intentions remain unclear.

Russian Satellite Imagery Provides the Syrian Air Force With Direct Targets

BY LEITH FADEL ON SEPTEMBER 19, 2015 FEATURED

The Russian Federation has recently boosted their military aid to the embattled Syrian Armed Forces, providing not only heavy weaponry, armor, and military personnel, but also, satellite imagery that has assisted the Syrian Arab Air Force (SAAF) with locating the positions of the enemy combatants across Syria.

In August of 2015, the Syrian-Russo military agreement was finalized after the Syrian Government’s Deputy Prime Minister – Walid Muallem – visited the Russian capital of Moscow to accept the terms of the proposal that would allow for the Russian military to increase the total number of soldiers on the ground in western Syria.

As a result, the Russian military command sent a number of advisors to the port-city of Tartous in order to begin the process of using satellite imagery to expose enemy positions and the Syrian Armed Forces’ overall effectiveness as a cohesive unit to combat terrorists around the country.

So far, the satellite imagery provided by the Russian military has paid dividends for the Syrian Air Force, as they are now able to track terrorist convoys and movements across the country without the use of spy drones; this has resulted in less flights and more damage to the enemy combatants.

According to a military source in east Homs, the Syrian Air Force’s airstrikes above the ancient city of Palmyra on Friday were by far the most effective aerial bombardment since the terrorists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) captured this desert area in the Homs Governorate.

On Friday, the Syrian Air Force launched only 11 airstrikes above Palmyra; yet, these airstrikes were extremely effective, as they destroyed four armored vehicles along the road to the Ancient Quarries in northern Palmyra.

At the volatile Idlib Governorate, the Syrian Air Force only launched 23 airstrikes, marking the first time since October of 2012 that the SAAF hasn’t conducted more than 30 airstrikes inside this northern Syrian province.

There is also speculation that Russia is planning to ask the Iraqis for the Russians to have a huge air force base in Baghdad too.

This is because ISIS are in Iraq and eastern Syria and the Russian air force operating from Baghdad means ISIS can be destroyed from both the east and west (Latakia in western Syria and Baghdad to the east in Iraq).

Turkey has abandoned all delusions of creating a "No-fly zone" or annexing parts of Syrian territory in a so-called "security zone".

The Russian bear has come and the Turks have got the message to back down.

lol, the Erdogan regime can do nothing.

Russian marines clash with ISIS in Syria

              September 21, 2015

              Translated by Kristina Rus

              Segodnia.ru:

Russian marines engaged in a fight with militants of the Islamic State near the Syrian city of Latakia.

According to news agency "Fresh Wind", on Saturday night to Sunday morning members of ISIS tried to mount an attack on the airbase, however, they were ambushed.

During the battle, the Russian military claims to have killed some militants, and some captured.

The agency also notes that the ambushed militants had a detailed plan of the air base and clear satellite images marked with key military installations.

Below is the original Russian from the Segodnia.ru website if anyone doubts me.

By the way most of what I post here is in advance of the mainstream western news, examples include:

              - I said Russia was prepared to send troops to Syria

              HAPPENED.

              - I said Russia had sent troops to Syria when even a respected blog "The Saker" disagreed.

              HAPPENED.

If you blindly follow the mainstream western media or wait for them to "endorse" the truth then you will be slow.

Here is the article in Russian, Google translate can be used to translate it:

This follows Russia's largest military drills of the year a few days ago with nearly 0.1 million Russian troops in military exercises.

Russia to deploy 2,000 in Syria air base mission’s ‘first phase’

Kathrin Hille in Moscow and John Reed in Jerusalem

Russia is to deploy 2,000 military personnel to its new air base near the Syrian port city of Latakia, signalling the scale of Moscow’s involvement in the war-torn country.

The deployment “forms the first phase of the mission there”, according to an adviser on Syria policy in Moscow.

The force will include fighter aircraft crews, engineers and troops to secure the facility, said another person briefed on the matter.

The pair declined to confirm whether Moscow had sent surface-to-air missiles and fighter jets, as alleged by Washington at the weekend.

But Russian and western military experts said surface-to-air missiles were an integral part of the defences of any air base.
The comments are unlikely to allay fears in the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis), that Russia’s military involvement in Syria could escalate the country’s bloody civil war or risk incidents between Russian and other forces active in the country.
A Russian official on Monday dismissed as “disingenuous” comments by John Kerry, US secretary of state, that the presence of Russian air-to-air combat capacity and surface-to-air missiles in Syria “raises serious questions”, since the capabilities are of little military use against jihadi groups such as Isis, which is Moscow’s stated reason for its increased intervention in the Syrian conflict.

“You know as well as we do that anyone building an air base will put in such air defences, so there’s no reason to use this to cast doubt on our initiative to fight the Islamic State,” he said.

Three western defence officials agreed that the Russian deployment tallied with the numbers needed to establish a forward air base similar to those built by western militaries in Afghanistan.

Benjamin Netanyahu is on a lightning visit to Moscow to discuss Russia’s military deployments in Syria in a sign of Israel’s growing unease over arms transfers in the region. Siona Jenkins talks to John Reed, Financial Times Jerusalem correspondent, about the Israeli prime minister’s concerns.
Fears that Russia’s ramped up military presence could further complicate the balance of forces in Syria prompted Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to travel to Moscow for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

After the meeting, Mr Netanyahu told Israeli media that he and Mr Putin had agreed on a mechanism to co-ordinate the two countries’ military actions in Syria and prevent Israeli and Russian troops from accidentally exchanging fire.

“Israel and Russia share a common interest to ensure stability in the Middle East,” Mr Netanyahu said.

Mr Putin condemned attacks against Israel but said they were carried out by “internal elements” rather than the Syrian army, which he described as incapable of opening a new front.

“Our main goal is to defend the Syrian state,” Mr Putin said.

The Israelis have warned repeatedly about the transfer of what they call “game-changing” weapons to Hizbollah. The Iran-backed militant group — which supports Moscow’s ally, Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad — has shelled Israel in the past. Israel has targeted suspected weapons convoys or caches inside Syria in several unacknowledged air strikes since 2013.
In a sign of the risks this could entail, Moscow on Monday accused Syrian rebel forces of shelling its embassy in Damascus and demanded that their western and regional allies take steps to rein them in.
The Russian foreign ministry said a shell, which landed near its embassy on Sunday but caused no casualties, came from Jobar, which is held by anti-Assad fighters who were not allied with Isis and had “external sponsors”.
“We expect a clear position with regard to this terrorist act from all members of the international community, including regional players,” the ministry said. “This requires not just words but concrete action.”
It added that the fighters’ “foreign sponsors” were responsible for using their influence on “illegal armed formations”.

                    Unknown Prince a.k.a "Insight" analysis:

Russia is ditching Syria. The Assad regime is about to collapse. China is ditching Syria. Russia has given Israel the green light to bomb Syria and invade it. I am Unknown Prince political analyst extraordinaire!!!

                    Real world:

                    - As I said the Putin government in Russia sees Syria as an area of national security, in geo-political terms Syria is now as much part of Russia as Russia's mainly Muslim region of Daghestan where there is also a Salafist insurgency.

I have consistently maintained that for Russia, Syria is a red line, whose security they will not compromise even if it means threatening nuclear war.

                    Am I right?

                    Well let's ask these questions.

                    - Has Russia taken any practical military actions?

                    YES

                    - Has Russia sent its navy next to Syria?

                    YES

                    - Has Russia sent its airforce to Syria?

                    YES

                    - Has Russia sent its army to Syria?

                    YES

                    - Is Russia now supplying the Syrians with satellite images of rebel positions?

                    YES

So Russia has put its money where its mouth is, and acted. Actions speak louder than words. White Slavic Orthodox Russian soldiers are in mainly Arab Muslim Syria, when Russia is under sanctions.

                    Why?

Because as I have said Syria is seen as a red line for the Russia-China-Iran axis.

However it seems that according to UnknownPrince ("Insight") Russia is sendings its armed forces to Syria, just so that Israel can invade and conquer it, rather than Russia saving the Assad regime.
