Marat Safin: From Hell-Raiser To Devout Public Figure

Former tennis player Marat Safin gives a reading during Eid al-Adha prayers in Nizhny Novgorod last week.

Former world No.1 tennis player Marat Safin is well known internationally as a gifted but mercurial tennis talent who could humble the likes of Pete Sampras and Roger Federer when he was in the mood.

He was also renowned -- some would say notorious -- for his lavish off-court lifestyle, replete with glamorous women on his arm and flashy cars in his driveway.

In recent years, however, the two-time Grand Slam winner has done a lot to temper his brash bad-boy image. The opulent trappings of fame are no longer so evident and his impetuous racket-smashing antics are now a distant memory.

Since his retirement in 2009, he has consolidated this newfound respectability by becoming an elected member of parliament for President Vladimir Putin's ruling United Russia party.

In the eyes of many, Safin has added a dash of youthful vibrancy to Russia's old guard, something he himself acknowledged ahead of his election in December 2011.

"I could be the best-looking guy in the Duma," he said. "But that's only because all the other guys are over 60."

Safin's days as a womanizing tennis star are now a distant memory.

With his political star in the ascendant, Safin has also embraced his ethnic Tatar identity.

Tennis fans who still associate him with the temperamental, volatile party animal of old would find it hard to recognize the modest, seemingly devout Muslim who attended prayers wearing a traditional Tatar tubetey during Eid al-Adha celebrations in Nizhny Novgorod last week.

Nonetheless, Safin himself maintains that his faith and ethnicity have always been an integral part of his make-up, even during his hell-raising playing days.

"You can't fight your genes," he told "USA Today" in 2005. "I'm Russian, but I'm 100 percent Muslim. All the Muslim people are passionate, stubborn. We have hot blood."

Of course, Safin's very public mosque appearance during one of Islam's biggest feasts is also good politicking for any ambitious tyro seeking to bolster his grassroots support.

It could even be seen as a timely endorsement of Russia's system of ethnicity-based republics, which was roundly condemned on October 27 by leading opposition politician Mikhail Prokhorov.

In this sense, Safin could be seen to embody what United Russia thinks of Prokhorov's proposal to abolish ethnic republics such as Tatarstan, Daghestan, and North Ossetia.

Tennis fans who still associate Marat Safin with the volatile party animal of old would find it hard to recognize the modest, seemingly devout Muslim who attended prayers in traditional Tatar dress during Eid al-Adha celebrations last week.

        - Prokhorov was a "Liberal" politician that wanted to abolish ethnic republics such as Tatarstan.

        Putin's party is against that.

Prokhorov aslo owns the US basketball team, the Brooklyn Nets.

        So much for the "pro-American = liberal = good v pro-Russian = bad" narrative.

        • How Islam Got Its Groove Back in Russia

Russian state attitudes toward religion changed after the collapse of the Soviet Union. What did this mean for Islam?

          Rebecca M. Miller Subscribe to Rebecca M. Miller(The National Interest) OPINION / ANALYSIS Tue, Apr 14 | 448 1

Muslims make up roughly 11 percent of Russia’s total population.

Vladimir Putin has made religion a central part of his public image, using Orthodoxy as a way to bolster for his political agendas. But Orthodoxy is not the only religion that experienced a revival in the post–Cold War period; among other religions, Islam, once shunned by the Soviet state, has increasingly been embraced by the Russian state.

This was a major theme of an April 7 presentation at George Washington University’s Elliott School by Bulat Akhmetkarimov, a PhD candidate at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). At the event, titled “Islam and the Dynamics of Ethno-Confessional Regimes in Russia, 1990-2012,” Akhmetkarimov discussed the Russian state’s attitudes toward religion and how attitudes toward Islam have evolved in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

As the largest religious minority in Russia, Muslims make up roughly 11 percent of Russia’s total population. Based on statistics provided by Pew Research Center, this percentage is predicted to increase to roughly 13 percent by 2030 and nearly 17 percent percent by 2050, with about twenty million Muslims in Russia.

To highlight just how much has changed with respect to Islam in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Akhmetkarimov stated that the percentage of Muslim “believers” has increased dramatically over the last two decades or so.

He further asserted that there was a post-Communist Islamic revival in Russia around 1997, commenting that the number of mosques in Russia increased from 160 to 7,000 between the years 1990 and 1997. While these were mostly private initiatives, the increase in the number of these initiatives could have been indicative of a relaxing of attitudes in Russia towards Islam, and perhaps religion more generally.

The number of Islamic missionaries from abroad also increased from zero to one thousand between those same years
. Furthermore, the late 90s also saw a spike in the frequency in usage of the terms “Wahhabism” and “Salafism.”

Along with these trends, Russian state attitudes towards Islam, and religion in general, were undergoing a huge shift. During the Soviet Union, state policy could be categorized as “assertive secularism.” The state clamped down on religious expression. Many Russians started replacing the Orthodox icons in their krasnye ugoly (beautiful corners)—the place in one’s house where icons were placed and towards which many would pray—with portraits of Lenin.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Akhmetkarimov asserts, state policies shifted to “passive secularism,” with attitudes toward religious education and religious press being categorized as “neutral.”

In the 2000s, state policies shifted to “established religions,” recognizing not just one religion, as was the case in Russia from 988 through Peter the Great’s rule, but recognizing many of them and adopting a more regulatory attitude. Akhmetkarimov dubbed this phenomenon an “organic partnership.”

Akhmetkarimov also explained how Russia changed from a multiethnic (as opposed to monoethnic) state in the 1990s, to one that was more supraethnic in the 2000s, emphasizing the importance of being culturally Russian, not necessarily purely Russian by blood. Akhmetkarimov believes these shifts have contributed to a much wider acceptance of religion and a reemergence of Islam in post-Communist Russia society in the late 1990s.

Akhmetkarimov also addressed the limits of the “organic partnership” model, and why the model may not be successful or sustainable. For example, it could confine religion to specific definitions, interfaith relations could become tense, nationalism could increase as a result of immigration, Islamic religious pluralism could emerge, and various other structural problems could arise.

Asked how, if at all, he thought Russian state attitudes toward Islam might be affected by Putin’s increasing emphasis on Orthodoxy and actions in Ukraine, he argued that the Orthodox Church has its own goals and is not simply a “tool of the state.” He further pointed out that Russia “certainly is not aiming to become a religious state,” but that it is not anti-religious, either.

He generally did not seem to think that the religious freedom of Muslims in Russia would be harmed in the near future. Hopefully he is right.

          • Russia Just Closed NATO's Land Corridor to Afghanistan

            Long overdue

            Have fun going through Pakistan?

“The graveyard of empires” just got a little bit more graveyardy: Medvedev has‬ canceled the decree that allows ‪NATO‬ forces to use Russian territory as a transit corridor to Afghanistan. The decision comes just as it was revealed that the U.S. plans on extending its already over-extended “stay” in Afghanistan. Hey, somebody has to guard all those delicious poppy fields!

            The decree states:

“With regard to the ceasing of actions related to the NATO resolution 1386 (2001), the Russian Federation issues the following decree:

To nullify the acts of the Government of the Russian Federation as listed according to the appendix.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation informs the governments of foreign lands and international organisations of the ceasing of terrestrial and combined (rail, auto and air) transit of weapons, military goods and ammunition across the Russian Federation , following the address of the International powers of defence cooperation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.”

Have fun resupplying your poppy-guarding bases via Pakistan….

            - Russia is angry with US aggression in Ukraine and this is just one move hitting back at the Americans.

By Web DeskPublished: April 8, 2015

The mosque was seized and closed in the 1920s to be used as a cinema and then a restaurant that served alcohol.

RUSSIA: The Red Juma Mosque located in Russia’s Tomsk region has reopened for worship after 90 years.

The mosque was first opened in 1901 but was seized and closed in the 1920s to be used as a cinema and then a restaurant that served alcohol.

In 2002, restorations began to open the mosque for worship. An official ceremony marked the opening of the mosque for the Muslim population.

Guests were greeted at the entrance of the mosque Russia’s Asia Representative Mufti Seyh Nfigullah Asirov and Tomsk Regional Mufti and Red Juma Mosque Imam Nizomutdin Jumaev.

The ceremony was opened with a recitation from the Holy Quran and a special speech to thank the attendees.

Friday congregational prayers were held with the attendees once the ceremony was over, and this marked the mosque as being open for service.

Many took to Twitter to share the news of the reopening of the mosque:

                • Financial links with world of Islam key focus at Kazan
                  Summit 2015 15-16 June

Top international investment conference Kazan Summit 2015 to be held June 15-16.

Russia's main economic forum for developing constructive global trade and investment with the Islamic world is a unique strategic event.

The Kazan Summit is organized annually by the Islamic Business and Finance Development Fund and supported by Russia's upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, the government of Tatarstan and regional investment agencies.

Seen as a major strategic event, its agenda focuses on globally significant issues that determine the direction and development of economic relations between Russia and the countries of the Islamic world. Past summits have targeted international trade, smart cities construction, foreign investments and food security.

This year's main theme for the 7th annual summit is 'Islamic finance for constructive global trade and investment.' Delegates from throughout Russia and the countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will be in Kazan - a city considered Russia's third capital - for the summit.

The Islamic finance industry is one of the most active developing sectors in world economics and is increasingly seen as an effective tool for the development of trade, investment and collaboration between Russia and countries of the Islamic world.

Russia was given special observer status at the OIC in 2005, providing it with a firm base for the improving relations with OIC member countries. The move created a political foundation for further cooperation. As part of that process, the Kazan Summit has become the main platform for developing relations between Russian regions and OIC member countries, taking economic cooperation to an international level.
Over the past seven years the Kazan Summit has gained an international reputation as a practical and engaging event. Numerous business deals have been sealed during past summits, investment projects developed and new business networks created.

                  • Bye bye Pax Americana...

We just got another sign that the world's economic center is moving east

                    ELENA HOLODNY

                    MAY 22, 2015, 8:48 PM 350

                    Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

We could be seeing a high-speed transport route that runs from China to Europe through Kazakhstan soon — and that says something about global economic trends.

"I propose creating a new, high-speed combined transport route — the Eurasian transcontinental corridor," Kazakhstan president Nursultan Nazarbayev stated on Friday at an economic forum in Astana, according to the Moscow Times.

The expected volume of cargo in the Kazakh section of the road will make up to 30 million tons per year, according to the Kazakh president.

"The route will connect not only China and Kazakhstan, but also Russia and Europe, and it will have access to the Central Asian countries," he said, according to Vedomosti.

The volume of trade between China and the EU amounts to nearly $600 billion and is projected to increase to $800 billion by 2020, according to Nazarbayev's figures.

"So there's great value in a land route to Europe for a growing Asia. Furthermore, this path is much shorter than the sea route by nearly three times," Nazarbayev reportedly said.

The larger significance of the new link between Europe and China via Kazakhstan is that it fits into two larger trends: First, that the economic center of the world is quickly shifting towards China, and second, that Central Asia's economy is heating up.

One of the biggest long-term trends of the 21st century is likely to be the growth of emerging economies.

As Business Insider reporter Andy Kiersz wrote, "With the rise of emerging markets in Asia and elsewhere, the [economic] center [of the world] has begun to shift back to the east and south."

And if McKinsey Global Institute's "projections about demographics and growth in the next few years are correct, that shift will only continue and accelerate, as emerging and developing markets continue to grow rapidly while developed markets grow at a much slower pace."

Within the larger trend of the economic center moving towards Asia, we find increased economic cooperation between Russia and China — whose relationship was without a doubt strengthened after the Ukraine conflict.

According to Alexander Gabuev, a senior associate and chair of the Russia in Asia-Pacific Program at Carnegie Moscow Center, Russia pulling toward China will lead to "expanded" political cooperation in three areas: "cooperation in Central Asia; alternatives to the Bretton Woods institutions; and increased cooperation on domestic political issues." Although the two countries will "likely stop short of a formal military alliance."

"It is Inner Asia — Afghanistan, Mongolia, and the five post-Soviet states of Central Asia — that is likely to see the most impact from the deepening of Sino-Russia integration," writes Dmitri Trenin, the director of Carnegie Moscow Center, in a paper on the Sino-Russo entente.

"What is likely to emerge is a trade and investment zone covering all of central, northern, and eastern Eurasia. With China as its powerhouse, this area can be called Greater Asia — from Shanghai, its business center, to St. Petersburg, its outpost at Europe's doorstep."

                    Trans Siberian Experience

The new bullet train would run alongside current trains but will cut the travel time by 6 days.

Already we've seen several Beijing-led and Moscow-endorsed notable initiatives such as the Silk Road Economic Belt, the development of the Northern Sea Route, a high-speed rail link that will connect Moscow to Beijing, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

"Putin’s vision of a 'greater Europe' from Lisbon to Vladivostok, made up of the European Union and the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union, is being replaced by a 'greater Asia' from Shanghai to St. Petersburg," according to Trenin.

The bottom line: Kazakhstan's new proposal fits the larger trend that the economic center of the world is shifting east, and Central Asia is heating up while it does.

*The world economy keeps on moving east.

This means world power (money is power) shifts east.

American power is declining thus all the destabilization and terrorism that America instigates will be declining.

The American campaign against Libya may mark the turning point and the end of their power.

Notice they have not been able to even carry out an air campaign against Syria.

It is also very unlikely they can destroy the Assad government, as he is far stronger now than he was 2 years ago.

America wants to prevent peaceful economic relations between Russia and the EU so deliberately carried out the Maidan coup in Ukraine so that war would break out.

The Europeans would see the Russians as aggressors and then turn to Uncle Sam as their "saviour". There would be a new cold war between Europe and Russia. However the Russians know what the American game plan is and have side stepped this.

America's days of global hegemony and bullying are slowly but steadily coming to an end.

FIFA arrests: We have cooperated with investigators

(CNN)Russian President Vladimir Putin has come out swinging in defense of FIFA's embattled president and against U.S. authorities who've gone after soccer's powerful, polarizing governing body.

The Kremlin posted Putin's combative comments Thursday, a day after U.S. authorities announced the indictment against 14 soccer officials and sports marketing executives in a corruption investigation, and the opening of a Swiss investigation into possible shenanigans related to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids that went to Russia and Qatar, respectively.

Some, like British Prime Minister David Cameron, have called for an end to Sepp Blatter's presidency or at least the postponement of FIFA's election set for Friday.

                      Not Putin.

He's not only stood firmly behind Blatter, but suggested geopolitics is driving this law enforcement crackdown.

"The USA definitely (has) nothing to do with this," the Russian President said of FIFA, which is based in Switzerland. "This is yet another obvious attempt to spread their jurisdiction to other (countries)."

Why is the U.S. bringing down the hammer on FIFA?

Putin: U.S. was trying to influence FIFA election

Along with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the upcoming World Cup was supposed to be one of the crowning moments for Putin during his second stint in office.

Russia got the 2018 tournament despite "pressure" on Blatter to prevent it from happening, Putin said -- suggesting that's one reason U.S. authorities went after FIFA. (Along with being at odds with Russia on numerous issues, the United States bid unsuccessfully for the 2022 World Cup that was awarded to Qatar, an Arab nation with little soccer history and a climate with scorching summer temperatures.)

"I have no doubt that this is obviously an attempt to prevent Mr. Blatter's re-election (as) FIFA president," Putin said.

U.S. President Barack Obama hasn't weighed in publicly on whether he wants Blatter in or out, nor have top members of his administration. But last week Sens. John McCain, a Republican and Bob Menendez, a Democrat, urged FIFA officials in an open letter "to reconsider its support for President Sepp Blatter ... in light of his continued support for Russia's hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup."

"Given Russia's ongoing violations of Ukraine's territorial integrity and Putin's efforts to undermine the principles of multilateral cooperation, shared norms and international security agreements, we believe that allowing Russia to host the World Cup would bolster the Putin regime at a time when it should be condemned," the senators wrote.

A Russian state news story Thursday referenced this letter, as well as Putin's take that FIFA's corruption scandal will not affect the next World Cup.

The Russian leader said flatly, "This does not concern us."

Russian President Vladimir Putin has come out swinging in defense of FIFA President Sepp Blatter and against U.S. authorities who’ve gone after FIFA.

                      1. The US is a country with very little historical connection with football. It is almost like France suddenly developing an "interest" in cricket, a sport which it has little to do with.

                      2. The US obviously wants to stop the world cup being held in Russia in 4 years and characteristically furious against anyone who dares defy its will in this case FIFA.

                      3. The other thing which is going on is that there is a chance that Israel will be kicked out of FIFA as Palestine may seek the expulsion of Israel which illegally occupies Arab land. If 3/4 of FIFA agree then Israel is out.

So it seems like the Americans decided to move in and get heavy with FIFA, in true American mafia style.

Anyway FIFA itself is a corrupt organization, but it is no way as bad as the USA.

Even if the Americans do achieve their goal of preventing a football world cup in Russia in the next few years by intimidating FIFA they will have ruined the image of FIFA, world football and of the world cup itself, which would no longer be seen as joyous sporting occassion but blemished with an image of corruption, politics and American intimidation.

BY TIMES OF ISRAEL STAFF May 29, 2015, 6:39 am 7

Palestinian youth hold red cards and placards reading in Arabic, "Israel out of FIFA," during a demonstration against the Israel Football Federation in the West Bank city of Hebron, on May 28, 2015.

After late-Thursday efforts to suspend a vote on Israel’s expulsion from world soccer’s governing body, Israeli soccer officials said a Friday vote on Israel’s participation in the international organization may be unavoidable.

The motion, brought by the Palestinian delegation and citing travel restrictions Israel has placed on some players and the participation of West Bank settlers in Israel’s own soccer federation, calls for the severing of Israeli soccer clubs’ access to the global soccer body. If it passes at the FIFA congress in Zurich on Friday, it would effectively leave Israel unable to participate in international soccer tournaments.

To pass, the Palestinian delegation must win over three-quarters of the 209 member soccer federations of FIFA.

On paper, Israel appears to be safe. Dozens of soccer federations have told Israeli officials in recent days that they would vote against the motion, and the European federation UEFA, which has 54 voting members, publicly sided with Israel.

But Israeli officials are worried nonetheless, according to the Haaretz daily, because the vote will be by secret ballot and many in the international community may choose to anonymously punish Israel for the perception that it is responsible for stalled peace talks and continued occupation of the West Bank.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter, now embroiled in a massive corruption scandal that saw indictments filed this week against multiple present and former FIFA officials, has publicly opposed the Palestinian motion.

On a visit to Israel last week, Blatter told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that “football is nowadays such a strong, strong organization that we should go into a peace situation and not into a fighting situation, and football shall connect people and not divide people.”

Blatter has called a potential successful vote on the Palestinian motion a “dangerous” precedent that could get FIFA involved in other political and diplomatic battles.

It was a sentiment echoed by Netanyahu, who said: “Sport is a vehicle of goodwill among nations. The thing that could destroy the Football Association is politicizing it. You politicize it once with Israel, then you politicize it for everyone, and it will cause the deterioration of a great institution.”

But Blatter also urged Israel to take Palestinian demands seriously. Israel needed to “concede something,” Blatter said, in return for the motion being rejected.

In the last few days, Israel has offered a four-point compromise to the Palestinians: granting Palestinian soccer players and coaches special identification cards to allow them to pass more or less freely between Gaza and the West Bank, and between the West Bank and Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport so they could travel overseas with minimal hindrance; aid and approval for the construction of stadiums and soccer fields in the West Bank; tax exemptions for sporting supplies passing through Israeli ports on their way to Palestinian soccer clubs; and the establishment of a trilateral committee of officials from Israel, the Palestinian Authority and FIFA that would be tasked with resolving problems as they arise.

The Palestinian delegation to FIFA rejected the compromise, with Palestinian soccer chief Jibril Rajoub saying the motion would not be withdrawn unless the Israel Football Association itself kicked out five soccer clubs from West Bank settlements and FIFA established a committee to investigate racism in Israeli soccer.

Since the West Bank settlements are not considered within Israeli territory by the United Nations, FIFA rules stipulate that Israeli teams from the West Bank must obtain Palestinian permission to participate in the Israeli federation, and thus in world soccer tournaments and championships.

But the Palestinian rejection of the Israeli compromise may prove costly to the Palestinian effort.

Blatter, Haaretz reports, is considering supporting the Palestinian demand to sever West Bank teams from other Israeli teams as a concession to prevent the Israel vote from coming up Friday, but the demand has faced vehement opposition among Israeli officials.

Israel Football Association chairman Ofer Eini, in Zurich with the Israeli delegation to FIFA, rejected the demand out of hand.

“The Palestinians are trying to win a concession that the vote won’t get them. They’re trying to use sports to show the world that they succeeded in removing from the [Israel] Soccer Association teams from the other side of the Green Line. There is no chance in the world that Israel will be an accessory to such a thing, [even if] that means we go to a vote,” Eini said.

One Israeli delegate told Haaretz: “There is no chance that Israel will be suspended in the vote, and the only thing the Palestinian can achieve will be to win the support of countries that are in any case anti-Israel. If the Palestinians take this to the end, they’ll lose twice — first in the vote, and second in that they won’t get any of the concessions that Israel and the prime minister have already agreed to give them. They know this, but They’re not thinking rationally. They’re driven by politics.”

Meanwhile, UEFA president Michel Platini has praised the Israeli compromise proposal, which “satisfies and contributes meaningfully to improving the situation,” he told UEFA-member club leaders in Zurich. “Israel has not violated any [FIFA] regulation, and there is no cause for suspending her. I am convinced FIFA will adopt Israel’s proposal.

Eini, a long-time Labor party member and former Israeli union leader, warned FIFA officials in his own speech before the UEFA gathering on Wednesday that “any attempt to turn FIFA into a body that intervenes in [disputes over] international borders is unacceptable to us.”

*Just when there may be a meeting to kick Israel out of world soccer, the Americans *suddenly* arrest senior FIFA figures, when they could have done it much earlier.

                        What a "coincidence".

Hopefully the Americans won't be able to stop the Russians from hosting their world cup in 2018.

                        • Did the US Just Execute a FIFA Coup D'Etat?

This tinks to high heaven. Why are US policemen involved in a crack down on FIFA corruption?

Is their sin corruption of awarding a world cup to Russia?

A coup d’état like no other before in history. What the US pulled off today regarding FIFA has bizarre parallels to the US coup d’état in Ukraine. You know when John McCain pops up something fishy is going on.

No doubt FIFA was/is a corrupt organisation…we all knew/know this.

Presidential elections are right around the corner…actually in just two days.

John McCain sent a letter yesterday:

…encouraging Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Congress to reconsider its support for President Sepp Blatter’s fifth term as FIFA President in light of his continued support for Russia’s hosting the 2018
                          FIFA World Cup.

The US wants Sepp Blatter out and their puppet, yes man, Mr. Jordanian Prince Ali bin al-Hussein in as FIFA President. The Jordanian “Oligarch” Prince would make sure to answer exclusively to the US.

Ali bin al-Hussein, the man the Americans want as their boy running FIFA.

                          Resources to plunder…tons!

Controlling FIFA means controlling and influencing the sporting world. Gambling and match fixing would now flow through Washington. Corruption would flow through Washington. Sponsorship, advertising revenue, TV rights, and all massive contracts associated with FIFA would fall to US companies, and under US control.

FIFA is Ukraine, Ukraine is FIFA…think about it:

US hasn’t had major dealings with FIFA since a world cup more than 20 years ago

Here is the full FIFA, corruption story from Zero Hedge:

That FIFA has been a hotbed of corruption, shady backroom dealings and outright crime for years, has been known to anyone with even a passing interest in football.

Which is why we were surprised to learn this morning that none other than the US Attorney General, seemingly content with all the wristslaps handed out to criminal US foreign banks (and subsequent SEC waivers) gave FIFA the red card in a charge detailing “rampant” corruption in international soccer hours after 14 officials were arrested on accusations of a 24-year scheme to enrich themselves through FIFA, whose office was searched in a series of dawn raids in Zurich.

The US charge was announced alongside of a Swiss criminal probe related to the controversial 2010 award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar, respectively, hours after seven soccer officials were arrested and 14 indicted in Zurich, concurrent with a raid on the soccer body’s hilltop office in Zurich.

The case involves bribes “totaling more than US$ 100 million” linked to commercial deals dating back to the 1990s for soccer tournaments in the United States and Latin America, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice said in a statement.

The U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement that two current FIFA vice presidents were among those arrested, Jeffrey Webb of the Cayman Islands and Eugenio Figueredo of Uruguay. The others are Eduardo Li of Costa Rica, Julio Rocha of Nicaragua, Costas Takkas of Britain, Rafael Esquivel of Venezuela and Jose Maria Marin of Brazil. All seven are connected with the regional confederations of North and South America and face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of racketeering.

The arrests sanctioned by the US DOJ as part of a separate US corruption probe took place at the lakeside Baur au Lac Hotel in downtown Zurich, long favored as a place for senior FIFA officials to stay. It was the stage for intense lobbying for votes ahead of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosting decisions in December 2010, and is where this Friday FIFA President Sepp Blatter’s re-election was due to take place. Blatter was not among those originally charged by the US DOJ.

“The indictment alleges corruption that is rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted both abroad and here in the United States,” Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch said in the statement. “It spans at least two generations of soccer officials who, as alleged, have abused their positions of trust to acquire millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks.”

As reported by Bloomberg “The collection of relevant bank documents had already been ordered beforehand at various financial institutes in Switzerland,” the Swiss Attorney General’s office said in a statement on its website. “The files seized today and the collected bank documents will serve criminal proceedings both in Switzerland and abroad.”

According to AP, FIFA said Friday’s presidential election would go ahead as planned with Sepp Blatter going for a fifth term. FIFA also ruled out a revote of the World Cups won by Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022.

The Swiss prosecutors’ office said in a statement they seized “electronic data and documents” at FIFA’s headquarters on Wednesday as part of their probe. And Swiss police said they will question 10 FIFA executive committee members who took part in the World Cup votes in December 2010.

Bloomberg also reports that the choice of Qatar, the world’s richest country per capita, and Russia was made following a campaign that was overshadowed by claims of vote rigging. An investigation carried out on FIFA’s behalf by former U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia ruled last year that though there were examples of wrongdoing, nothing was found that would require a re-vote. Garcia rejected the ruling and quit.

As many as half the FIFA membership that decided where the World Cup should be played have faced accusations of breaching regulations. Qatar and Russia have denied their bid teams acted improperly. “It is suspected that irregularities occurred in the allocation of the FIFA World Cups of 2018 and 2022,” the Swiss authorites said in the statement. “The corresponding unjust enrichment is suspected to have taken place at least partly in Switzerland.”

Among those charged by the Justice Department include Jeffrey Webb, the head of the regional soccer body for North and Central America and the Caribbean, and Jack Warner, his predecessor. Mr. Webb is also a FIFA vice president.

According to the WSJ, the 47-count indictment accuses two generations of soccer officials of working with sports marketing executives to shut out competitors and keep lucrative contracts for themselves.

Prosecutors said U.S. and South American sports marketing executives paid more than $150 million in bribes and kickbacks to FIFA officials to obtain media and marketing rights to international soccer tournaments.

Authorities said they obtained 6 guilty pleas, including from Charles Blazer, the former general secretary of regional body Concacaf, and Mr. Warner’s son Daryll.

According to the indictment, the alleged bribes affected the awarding of rights around World Cup qualifiers and other Concacaf tournaments, including in Brazil. Prosecutors said it also affected the selection of the host country for the 2010 World Cup, which took place in South Africa.

                          * * *

Blatter had been scheduled to attend a meeting of the Confederation of African Football in a different downtown Zurich hotel, but he canceled his appearance.

Blatter’s only opponent in Friday’s presidential election, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, said it was “a sad day for football,” but declined to comment further.

                          * * *

The full list of indicted officials and executives:

Nine of the defendants were FIFA officials by operation of the FIFA statutes, as well as officials of one or more other bodies:

Jeffrey Webb: Current FIFA vice president and executive committee member, CONCACAF president, Caribbean Football Union (CFU) executive committee member and Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) president.
Eduardo Li: Current FIFA executive committee member-elect, CONCACAF executive committee member and Costa Rican soccer federation (FEDEFUT) president.
Julio Rocha: Current FIFA development officer. Former Central American Football Union (UNCAF) president and Nicaraguan soccer federation (FENIFUT) president.
Costas Takkas: Current attaché to the CONCACAF president. Former CIFA general secretary.
Jack Warner: Former FIFA vice president and executive committee member, CONCACAF president, CFU president and Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) special adviser.
Eugenio Figueredo: Current FIFA vice president and executive committee member. Former CONMEBOL president and Uruguayan soccer federation (AUF) president.
Rafael Esquivel: Current CONMEBOL executive committee member and Venezuelan soccer federation (FVF) president.
José Maria Marin: Current member of the FIFA organizing committee for the Olympic football tournaments. Former CBF president.
Nicolás Leoz: Former FIFA executive committee member and CONMEBOL president.
Four of the defendants were sports marketing executives:

Alejandro Burzaco: Controlling principal of Torneos y Competencias S.A., a sports marketing business based in Argentina, and its affiliates.
Aaron Davidson: President of Traffic Sports USA Inc. (Traffic USA).
Hugo and Mariano Jinkis: Controlling principals of Full Play Group S.A., a sports marketing business based in Argentina, and its affiliates.
And one of the defendants was in the broadcasting business but allegedly served as an intermediary to facilitate illicit payments between sports marketing executives and soccer officials:

José Margulies: Controlling principal of Valente Corp. and Somerton Ltd.

And now we just sit back and wait to see how many of the defendants sent “donations” to the Clinton Foundation and how many speeches Hillary and/or Bill gave at the Baur au Lac in the past two decades.

                            • Anybody with any common sense knows that this is an American stunt to stop the Russians from hosting the world cup and also to make FIFA a US-controlled puppet organization.

The US wants to dominate the world and is furious when something is not in its control.

It issues state department statements on any thing that happens in any part of the world as the US is a "global power."

However these American meglomaniacs have made fools out of themselves....

The world cup in Russia is supposed to be held in over 36 months time.

If the Americans did put their Jordanian puppet in charge of FIFA to make FIFA a US-western run outfit and the Jordanian took the world cup from Russia, Putin would take FIFA to court.

                              The matter would drag out.

This court case would take a long time to resolve and even if a replacement host was found they would have virtually no time to organize this world cup.

The US and John Mccain would be written down in history as bullies and thugs who bullied FIFA in to taking the world cup from Russia and politicizing a sporting event.

McCain, the neo-con warhawk said to be throwing a personal fit at US humiliation in Ukraine with Russia strategically defeating them, thus trying to take the world cup from Russia in anger.

                              FAIL!!

                                29 May 2015

Zurich police confirmed today that they were responding to a bomb alert at the venue where international soccer's governing body Fifa is hosting its widely-watched annual congress, amid a massive corruption scandal that has seen several Fifa officials detained.

Zurich police spokeswoman Brigitte Vogt confirmed that a bomb alert had been received at the venue, where Fifa is holding the high-level meeting on the eve of a scheduled vote for the Fifa presidency that longtime leader Sepp Blatter is expected to win.

"I can confirm there has been a bomb threat against the Fifa congress, officers have been dispatched," the spokeswoman said.

“The police are there,” she said, refusing to provide further details.

Seven Fifa officials were arrested in Zurich on Wednesday and other leading figures were charged as both the United States and Switzerland investigated allegations of bribery and money laundering stretching back more than two decades.

Fifa president Blatter had earlier told delegates at the opening of the annual congress in Zurich that he could not be blamed for the controversy as he could not “monitor” every official.

Before the congress, Blatter had defied his vice-president Michael Platini's demand, in a face-to-face meeting, to resign.

“The next few months will not be easy for Fifa. I am sure more bad news will follow but it is necessary to begin to restore trust,” the 79-year-old Blatter said.

“We cannot allow the reputation of football and Fifa to be dragged through the mud any longer. It has to stop here.”

Blatter called the scandals “unprecedented” and said the “actions of individuals bring shame and humiliation on football and demand action had change from us all

*This "bomb threat" was obviously the work of the Americans who have Switzerland as one of their many vassal states through out the world.

Usually the Americans use "Islamist" groups for such operations, but even for the majority of the sheeple including those morons who blindly believe in the mainstream western media as the "gospel truth" and dismiss anything else as a "conspiracy theory", they too must use their limited brain power and wonder why an "Islamic group" (hypothetically speaking, not that the Americans have tried to claim an "Islamic" group was behind this threat) would be so bothered about football?

Anyway the American regime has failed, because Blatter has been re-voted as president.

If anyone should resign it is the corrupt and arrogant Michel Platini.

Also the whole world now knows Uncle Sam is trying to intimidate and bully FIFA so that the world cup will be stolen from Russia.

                                * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
