Ahmadinejad Hopes for Expansion of Ties with Tajikistan
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a message to his Tajik counterpart, felicitated Tajikistan's government and people on the country's National Day, and further underlined Tehran's resolve to further expand ties with the Central Asian state.

In his message, Ahmadinejad extended his congratulations over the 20th anniversary of Tajikistan's independence from the former Soviet Union, and hoped for the further enhancement of ties between the two neighboring states.

"I am confident that Tajikistan's government and people will step on the path of progress and development, relying on the country's age-old history and art and the valuable experiences they have gained during the last two decades after their country's independence, and on this path they will have the Islamic Republic of Iran's support," the Iranian president said.

He further expressed the hope that the two countries' friendly relations would further develop in light of the serious resolve and efforts made by the two countries' officials.

To conclude his message, Ahmadinejad wished health and success for the Tajik president and glory and welfare for the brotherly nation and government of Tajikistan.

    1. Ahmadenijad wants to expand Iranian influence and pan-Persianism in the region.

    2. There are only 2 Persian-speaking states in the world, Iran and Tajikistan, Ahmadenijad would love to make it 3 i.e. Iran, Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

    3. Iran knows it cannot do that much in the other 4 Central Asian states who are Turkic, so focuses on Persian-speaking - but Sunni - Tajikistan.

    4. The Tajiks play them, accept their advances, sign deals but do not take the Iranian ideology (e.g. Tajik restrictions on Islam).

    5. Iran has also lost in Azerbaijan, where Turkey is far more popular.

    6. Iran promotes Persian-centric theories of Pashtun history and origins.

Iran has virtually no success amongst Pashtuns. Even today Shia Qizilbashis in Khbyer-Pakhtunkhwa, like Yahya Khan, are not accepted as being Pashtun because of their Persian and Shia origins.

Iran, Tajikistan Start $220 Million Hydro Power Plant, IRNA Says

      Q
      By Ladane Nasseri - Sep 5, 2011 1:18 PM GMT+0100
      • started a $220- million hydro power station jointly built in the Central Asian country, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was on the second day of his trip to Tajikistan, and his counterpart Emomali Rakhmon attended the ceremony today for the start of the first unit of the Sangtoudeh-2 plant, IRNA said.
Tajikistan is one of the most vulnerable economies in Central Asia as it doesn’t have the energy resources of other countries in the region, the International Monetary Fund said in April. Iran will invest $180 million and Tajikistan $40 million in the plant, which has two units with an output capacity of 110 megawatts each, according to IRNA.
Construction started in 2006 by an Iranian company, according to IRNA. The plant’s revenue will go to Iran for 12 years after which its ownership will be transferred to Tajikistan, it said. Annual trade between the nations amounts to about $200 million, according to Iran’s foreign ministry.

            Yes most people speak it.

It is not officially the first official language of the country, or even have the same status as French does in Canada, hence I didn't include it alongside Iran and Tajikistan.

I personally have no problem with Farsi or Farsi-speakers. For me as a Bangladeshi it is just another language like Arabic, Urdu (Indian language from Uttar Pradesh), or Turkish.

However I don't think Nokia Afridi feels the same way.

I dont know what you are talking about. Dari is an official language of Afghanistan along side Pashto, and is the lingua franca of the country. Most business and education is in Dari as are most media outlets.

And youre right Dari doesnt have the status of French in Canada, they have a status of English in Canada

                      Thanks for pointing that out.

I don't follow Afghan affairs that much and was reading another thread on this forum, when an Afghan poster said Pashto is the only official language of Afghanistan.

I just checked online and wikipedia says both Pashto and Dari are the official languages.

The two official languages of Afghanistan are Persian Dari (lingua franca) and Pashto.

I am indifferent to the status of Farsi, and have nothing against it.

However still Afghanistan is not the same as Iran or Tajikistan which have Farsi and Farsi only as their sole official language.

Now I realize where I went wrong.

                        I misconstrued the following line:

Pashto in Afghanistan is on a rise, I can even provide you a bunch of videos, where in Tajik dominated provinces, the students are conducting workshops to learn the national, and official language Pashto!
                        http://www.pashtunforums.com/support...98/index4.html

                        Post 37.

I thought "the national, and official language Pashto" meant the sole national language. If I were to say "the national and official language of Austria is German", people would assume it was the only official language (which it is).

I am not an expert on Afghan affairs and rarely comment on Afghan threads e.g. ScimitarXEdge v Ashraf etc.

It is only Tajik now, they dropped Russian 2 years ago according to this:

                              http://www.rferl.org/content/Tajikis...e/1846118.html

By the way the language which I speak is called Sylheti (our region is Sylhet) and is different to standard Bengali. Before 1971 we used to have books in our language, written in our script.

After 1971 the national government wanted everyone to speak in the national language.

In addition to Bengalis who are like 95% or more of the population in Bangladesh we have Mongoloid-looking minorities such as Chakmas and Manipuris.

Chakmas, a non-Bengali (Mongoloid) tribal group in Bangladesh.
