at this point we can't even support a fraction of our 30 million people. at this rate, adding a larger population means that we just become more poor and weak. its pretty much like buying stuff u can't afford, u can't just declare bankruptcy and expect the government to hold ur hand, u end up on the damn streets.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

You can increase that with modern irrigation systems and Afghanistan likely has enough grazing land to support far more sheep and goats. Afghanistan has oil and natural gas and Chemical plants, can use the oil to produce fertlizers.

The Moroccans are growing a lot of fruit in the North African desert. However they have French Agro-technology and investment. You need quite a lot of energy to farm industrially. However wind turbines are very usefully for driving irrigation pumps in remote areas.

                Pivot irrigation method

More on land use in Afghanistan

Only a very small share of Afghanistan's land (about 15 percent), mostly in scattered valleys, is suitable for farming; about 6 percent of the land is actually cultivated. At least two-thirds of this farmland requires irrigation. Water is drawn from springs and rivers and is distributed through surface ditches and through underground channels, or tunnels, which are excavated and maintained by a series of vertical shafts. Such a tunnel is known as a karez or qanat. In 1987 about 26,600 sq km (10,300 sq mi) of farmland were irrigated.

Wheat is the most important crop, followed by barley, corn, and rice. Cotton is another important and widely cultivated crop. Fruit and nuts are among Afghanistan's most important exports. Afghanistan is noted for its unusually sweet grapes and melons, grown mostly in the southwest, north of the Hindu Kush, and in the fertile regions around Herat. Raisins are also an important export. Other important fruits are apricots, cherries, figs, mulberries, and pomegranates.

Livestock is nearly as important as crops to Afghanistan's economy. Karakul sheep are raised in large numbers in the north. The tight curly fleece of Karakul lambs is used to make Persian lamb coats. Other breeds of sheep, such as the fat-tailed sheep, and goats are also raised.

this means someone wants to control Afghans by reducing their numbers.
they couldnt do it through war and sanctions now there is this more "friendly" method, birthcontrol.

@AFG21 dont forget people in Afghanistan actually live in mountains.
that 12/13 % is load of non sense.
You can't support your present population and 40,000 people die every year in Afghanistan due to hunger and poverty. After 30 years of war, Afghanistan is in a state of societal collapse and the dividend of peace isn't high enough.

NATO as an occupying power and as such it has a duty to sustain and secure Afghanistan. However it's naturally far better to grow food locally, than to start trucking in wheat and rice.

The bottom line however is that Afghan women can't carry on dropping 6-7 kids for ever without the country facing the spector of famine. Since as this article points out Afghanistan now has the highest fertility rate in Asia with 6.6 children being born on average to every Afghan woman. What is more in Afghanistan, Afghan women have a 12% literacy rate and a life expectancy of 44 years.

Even Iran has brought it's fertility rate down some what by promoting contraception. As the Iranians where having around 20 kids and the situation was getting, so completely out of hand, that even the Mullah's started to get scared.

Afghanistan: Food Security Outlook Update March 2011

                  Key Messages
                  • Concerns of a failed wet season and its impact on the 2011 cereal harvest have shifted to flooding risks. As of mid-January, there has been a rapid increase in seasonal precipitation. USGS snow water volume models indicate relatively high levels of snow pack in most of the country, which could result in flooding if temperatures rise too quickly.
                  • Major regional trade policies and wheat markets may drive wheat prices upwards in the near term. Pakistan has imposed an export tax for all commercial goods destined for Afghanistan, including wheat. In addition, continued increases in Kazakhstan wheat export prices and the likely poor winter wheat harvest in China are expected to further drive prices upward.
                  • In the coming months, violence from the ongoing conflict is expected to resume in the south, southeast, and southwestern parts of the country, which could result in further displacement and livelihoods disruption.

the situation in Afghanistan is to be blamed on invasion and war.
In Afghanistan if people are having alot of children they too are taking care of them and see it as their duty.

there are alot of Afghans dying!

and i wasnt talking about reaching 50million in a couple of years.

Afghansitan is a rich country and it can sustain 50 million easilly if we look at near future but if we look at present time than yeah there is alot of poverty and its hard to feed people.

Listen I give you one exampel:

There is man and a women who are married. They leave on a land that is not really fertile but they can make enough food for them self and under that land there are minerals and othore stuf that they can sell and make a lots of money of it, but becuase they are both illiterate and don't have enough money they do nothing whit it. One day the women gets pragnent and they get a child and after two years another one. The don't really worry becuase there is still enough food for the for of them. But the husband is worried because he wants to sent his chileddren to school so that they can be educated and get the skills to get the natural recourses that are benith the ground. To send his two children to school he has one option to work really hard on the land and to sel the extra products from his land, whith that money he can send his two children to school. The two children get older and are know educated and they know now how to get those minerals from the ground and sell them. They do that and the children and the parents are now rich the both children marrie and get also children now they don't have to worry about food becuase if there land don't make enough food for them, than they can buy it from the neighbours becuse they have enough money now. Everebody leave happy. The End.

BUt what you sugesting is that, the man should just take another chiled and let the whole family work on that land, becuase the number of the persons is now bigger, there first priority is to get enough food for everyone. So the tree children stay iliterate becouse they dont have money to go to school. And one day the harvest is not good becuase of to littel rain, the whole family is now starving.

Now think about it, what is now the best option.

                        wth are you talking about?

you are looking at this from a wrong angle.

how about we make the school free so that more children can go to school?

They only reason that people can eb starving in Afghanistan is because of the war and not that they cant produce or raise their economy.

In Afghanistan especially in rural areas people have lands and they can easilly send their kids to school(even if its not free) but the problem is their are not enough schools and teaching material.

what you are suggesting is the chinese one child policy for a country with less than 30million people.Lets not forget there is a war thats going on,our economy is in pieces.
this means the mortality rate is high which means one child policy will mean an extreme reduction in population.

people were starving before the war too, plus the economy was almost non existent prior to the war as well.

when is before the war for you?

i guess you have never heard about sanctions.
the economy was low due to sanctions imposed by UN.

sanctions? are u talking about against the taliban? sanctions against the taliban began in mid 1999. the sanctions were pretty much useless since there was barely an economy to speak of, unless u count 50 million yearly trade with pakistan for a country of 30 million an "economy"
