Spousal Beating in Islam

Verse 4:34 of the Holy Quran prescribes the following to deal with "rebellious" wives:

"The Meanings of the Holy Qur'an," by Yusuf Ali:
Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).

"The Meaning of the Glorious Qur'an," by M.M. Pickthall:
Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.

"As to those women on whose part you see ill conduct, admonish them (first), (next) refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly if it is useful); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance). Surely Allah is Ever Most High, Most Great."

"The Message of the Qur'an" by Muhammad Asad:
"And for those women whose ill-will you have reason to fear, admonish them (first); then leave them alone in bed; then beat them; and if thereupon they pay you heed, do not seek to harm them. Behold, God is indeed most high, great!"

"The Sublime Quran," a new translation by Laleh Bakhtiar from a woman's point of view:
"But those whose resistance you fear, then admonish them and abandon them in their sleeping place then go away from them; and if they obey you, surely not look for any way against them; truly God is Lofty, Great."

Thats the thing, Dawezai, when it's the law of God, it is the law of God. For many of us, we don't even care about the justifications, and most of the time the justifications are only there for people, like yourself, who question it. You might find it an appealing task to question the justification but that doesn't rule out the law. (Take it as a mercy, your debating with the justification and not, what could be worse, debating with God? )

For people who think that they can justify and change Islam's rules just cause "80% of men don't" do it, I would like to ask them a question. Where exactleh do you folks draw the line? No, really, just cause everyone else is not doing it somehow makes it... okey? Wow, what a rational way of thought! (I would like to take this opportunity to bring to attention my 'oh so famous' example, so if everyone stopped stoning adulterers to death, it would become permissible to forgive them cause its "universal" now?) Never thought of living my life that way changing my values left and right.

Another point, if you wanna live like that then I repeat my sheikhs words (Yasir Qadhi's incase someone missed that :P) then just take religion out of it. If, YOU (generally speaking) don't have any limits, simply remove Islam from your propositions and call everything you do in the name of so called "humanity" whose rules are implemented based on what the human population deems proper! It will make your life alot easier too, kana? No seriously, Islam has a set of laws - either you take it or you drop it - where in the world did "Let me improvise and change it around cause every other women does it too" come in?

If you don't wanna beat your wife, don't say that Islam forbids it, just say that you wanna go with the flow of the world. I will beat my wife as it is my God-given right. Makes so much sense, kana?

Thanks for your input, LZ. The Verse raises some important questions. As it goes, "Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means".

1. Are all men the protectors and supporters of their women?
2. What is that "more (strength)" that has been given to men?
3. If men are given the "right" to beat their wives (if "needed") because men are the maintainers, then what about about (a) those women who are equally the maintainers and do jobs? and (b) those women who are rather the maintainers of their men?
4. Men have been given the "authority" to beat their wives if the latter are "rebellious" but what about those men who are rebellious, who will deal with them?

Islam is based on quran and the implementation and interpretation of it by the prophet muhammad sal allahu aleyhi wasallam.

He never used force against his wives. There is no evidence from his biography or the authentic hadeeths that he ever laid his hands on any of his wives.

Therefore, for a Muslim, the prophet muhammad sal allahu aleyhi wasallam is an example. Even though quranic ayat might imply that you may beat your wife, it does not mean we should take the text in whatever way it suites our personal preferences. We need to use the quranic text in our day to day life like the prophet muhammad sal allahu alayhi wasallam did.

People have been trying to justify violence against their wives through-out history abusing quranic ayat. Likewise, many other ayat of quran have been singled out for other reasons.

The strongest opinion among the scholars says that using a miswak stick to hit your wife is sufficient. And this hitting should not cause injury nor trauma.

If people use their wife as a punching bag, then it is their problem. Their account will be with allah.

As Muslims we should desire to see our religion being implemented in the best way possible. A sound judicial system could use shari'i rulings to prosecute men who are abusive.

But since we live in primitive communities we are unable to progress in the right direction.

Last thing we need is apostates and nihilists who support colonialism lecturing us about what is wrong about Muslims.

You people should take a good look at the brothels, womens slavery and gang raping that goes on right now in Afghanistan because of the colonist regime and their puppets and lapdogs who run the puppet government.

The verse says prefered "some of them over others", and not one of them over the other(ba'dahum ala ba'ad). Its not all men over all women but some men over women but also some women over men . Mostly men have power over women but women also in many cases have power over men. The verse is read wrong.

Dharab in the Quran has many meanings. It does not mean beat as in physical.
