  • Veganism and Islam

I have almost completely transitioned to a vegan diet and lifestyle. While I understand we are allowed to eat Halal meat, I just do not believe any meat is halal anymore even if by a 'Muslim' butcher is halal.

Any thoughts and impressions about my decision?

Our Prophet(pbuh) rarely ate meat, and he said that we must not make a graveyard of animals in our stomach.

Aside from my moral reasons, I can give you a bunch of other reasons (health, meat is a cancer causing carcinogen) as to why I switched. It was tough to do.

Well one thing I can say is that there is absolutely NOTHING harram in Veganism.

I have heard South Asian Mullahs say veganism is "harram" because some Hindus do it religiously, but that is an absurd argument. Because, even those Hindus are not Vegan, but Ovo-Lacto and in some cases Lacto-Vegetarians. Secondly all plant based foods are halal, so just eating plant based foods can't be harram.

I would only say, make sure you're very conscientious of your nutrition. You're taking out a whole area of food from your diet, which in itself supplies many essential nutrients that not all plant foods can give you in sufficient amounts. So supplement wisely and be on top of all your nutrition.

Environmentally and health wise veganism does show lower cancer risk, but on the flipside it may lead to higher risk of dementia and neurological imbalances. Also, vegan diets aren't "cruelty" free the reason it seems they are the better option in that context is animal slaughter practices, But as demand for plant based foods increases, so would a shift in horticultural and agricultural practices which could impact biodiversity and depopulate ecosystems to sustain just as animal agriculture does. There are other issues but I can't list them all out without some more background on it. However, as far as weight of environmental impact, even then it would be considerably lower, though not completely resolved.

At the end of the day, I think you're making a good choice, very healthy, but just make sure the health aspect is something you stay on top of. Get regular check ups and watch out for any deficiencies.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

Your going against nature bro. For millions of years humans and other animals have been feasting on each other.

I personally dont eat meat often. Maybe 2 or 3 times weekly

That withstanding, modern humans aren't in the hunter-prey ecological scheme anymore. These days meat is a ready made byproduct. How we consume and acquire and process meat is also "against nature".

That said, tomorrow I'm having lamb shanks at a friend's wedding. And I look forward to it.

I eat red meat/mammal meat only once or twice a week, if I completely cut off meats for one or two days I start getting headaches and feeling hungry all the time.
I remember reading about a type of protein you can't get except from meat.

I eat meat everyday and I think this vegan/vegetarian for humans is not normal. A good example are indics who are soft and weak because through many generations they ate very little to almost no meat not getting the nutrients that we are supposed to get.

As far the health effects, its mostly genetic. I have cousins who eat far "healthier" than I do and exercise more than I do but their cholesterol levels are much higher than mines where they have to take cholesterol medications. Also the food we eat today is not the food our grandparents ate. We are eating mostly hormone injected meats, eggs, dairy and genetically modified plants.

I think with Indics it's because they eat a lot of foods which estrogen production, like ghee and such ....just eating vegetables shouldn't affect testosterone that much. Then again, I'm not a doctor or dietician.

Actually I believe Khushal got a valid point. Even in the animal planet those who are meat-eaters use to be aggressive (lions, wolfs, piranhas, sharks, etc) while those who are grass-eaters tend to be less or non aggressive (cows, lambs, rabbits, etc).

Its pretty well known Hindu obsession with mean consumption. Savarkar, the father of modern Hindutva movement, used to mock Gandhi because he was vegetarian. They met in London. I read once that Savarkar was frying shrimps. When he offered some to Gandhi, he refused. Savarkar then said "only a fool would attempt to resist the British without being fortified by animal protein."

Hindus know that lack of meat consumption creates weak individuals. Thats why most of Hindus are such mentally and physically people. Heratis call Indians "merdom bi-emaan" because they look disgustingly weak.

To sum it up: centuries of meat protein deficiency created a nation of weak, effeminate and emotional losers. Just look at Karachi. He is a typical effete Apu. Inferior people.

Also Indic society overbreeds so everything becomes of lower quality, reason why europeans are much taller than Indics and other people's is because the short and ugly men on average can not pass on their genes but every indic no matter how repulsive can pass on his genes through arranged marriage, therefore allowing ****ty genetics to live on lol.

But how do you explain gorillas that are big and muscular but are almost exclusively vegetarian?

I really think other factors are involved....also Chinese, while not exclusively vegetarian have large populations of strict vegetarians and people who have plant based diets, they are certainly not effeminate at least not Indic level.

I have been focusing a lot on evolutionary biology, Iblis. One of the most interesting thing about apes its their social behavior and how they resemble tribal human societies. Under some circumstances, apes behave quite violently. But they are not violent by nature. Genetics its key here. For example, chmpanzees are smaller than gorillas but they are way stronger. They got also larger penis (no kidding here lol).

                        Gombe Chimpanzee War - Wikipedia

Something similar happens to vegetarian Hindus. Their character seems to be soft, weak, servile and effeminate, but they can also behave in a violent way. Thats why vegetarian Hindus defeated several times meat-eater Pakistani Muslims.

As you pointed out there are many factors behind human behavior. But I believe is safe to say that your diet plays a key role in your levels of aggressivity. Hindus use to say that "vegetarianism is the path to world peace". They got a point imo.

I think eating meat back home is a necessity as people walk alot and alot of times in the mountains.
Even cooked animal fat is ok as it will burn off but consuming too much meat in the West is nothing but trigger for diseases. Nothing against eating meat and not being vegan but I will definitely try to cut down. Another good thing is to cut down sugar and salt.

We are human beings not animals.
Totally different creation. Comparing human beings to wild animals in nature is not a good comparison.

well being obnoxiously violent isn't really a key factor in determining masculinity. Many women act that way too. Ghetto people are that way but are cowards when it counts, like "manning up" or taking responsibility, being strong leaders and so on. These people aren't vegetarians either. Maybe some vague arguments can be made regarding how violent a society is and meat eating. But even among us Afghans, meat is a luxury. I mean back home it's not like we eat chelo kebab or qablay pulao every day, we eat usually nukhud some green salad and some naan ...sometimes a fish if its caught from a river. We're some of the most violent people on the planet lol

Maybe there is some truth to vegetarianism and peace but I think masculinity is a balance of traits.
