Its quite obvious that you don't recognize the common folk as intelligent and call them "emotionally needy populace". The problem with your interpretation is that how would you know how to perform certain Islam practices without the Prophet (saw)'s sunnah? Without the Prophet (saw)'s interpretation of the Quran, you would be at lost.

The Quran needs an interpreter and a commentator. Otherwise, it would be really hard to understand the message that is being conveyed in it.

The Quran is spread for many centuries without printing press. The Arabs had many inventions during the 9th to 13 th century but where are they know? Where is the Roman Empire of the Moghuls? Where is the Roman Empire? You seem impressed with power and glory, but a materialistic one.
