Salafism relies on state patronage and funds for growth and expansion. With the Saudi economy now facing long-term problems e.g. decreasing oil supplies but an ever increasing population, the funds for Salafism/Wahabism to be promoted will dry up.
Intellectually, Salafism does not appeal to the professional middle classes of the Muslim world who are vital for the successful functioning of a country.
Salafis and other "Islamists" have been defeated/clamped down on the following Muslim countries:
- Algeria, crushed in the 1990s by the republican Algerian army, 100,000 lives lost.
- Afghanistan, Taliban kicked out of power in 2001.
- Egypt, Morsi's Brotherhood regime kicked out of power.
- Tunisia, the "moderate" diluted Brotherhood branch there, An-Nahda kicked out of power in the recent elections.
- Syria, stopped from taking over power in the country with Iran, Russia and China all working to prevent a Salafi/"Islamist" takeover.
- Bangladesh, "Islamists" kicked out of power in 2006 in the form of the junior coalition partner, the pro-Pakistan Jamaat e Islami. The Jamaat is now being clamped down on severely.
- Malaysia, the main "Islamist" party there is not very big and has lost support in Kelanatan (I know because I have a friend from Kelantan), the most religious state in Malaysia, with people realizing the label "Islamic" is not sufficient and good governance is needed.
- Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrzyghstan: Salafis/Islamists hold no power there and some of the countries there are under the Russian security orbit.
- Gulf, besides Saudi the cradle of Wahabism, none of the GCC states are controlled by "Islamists".
- Turkey, Erdogan's AKP (Milli Gorus) is restricted in what it can do. Alcohol is widespread in Turkey as are pornography, atheism and homosexuality which is becoming more and more prominent in Erdogan's Turkey.
Turkey's first LBGT football team.
"Islamist" groups are useful to America for destabilizing the Muslim world and causing destruction and bloodshed, however like their father the USA, they will be defeated.
