Is rabbit meat haram or halal. From my understanding it is harem in shia Islam, but halal in sunni. There is a high possibility that I am wrong, so I want to be sure. Can anyone clarify whether it is haram or halal.

Is Islam based in your personal practices? If people do it, then it must be okay, right?

I found this in second source:

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) has summed up for us the teaching of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) with regard to food and drink, which he derived from the saheeh ahaadeeth. He says in Zaad al-Ma’aad (1/147):
Similarly the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was not to reject what was available, and not to go out of his way to seek that which was not available. No good food was brought to him but he ate it, unless he had no appetite for it, in which case he left it but did not forbid it. He never criticized any food. If he wanted it he ate it, otherwise he would leave it, as he refrained from eating lizard meat because he was not used to it, but he did not forbid it to the ummah. He ate sweets and honey, which he liked. He ate camel meat, mutton, chicken, bustard, onager, rabbit and seafood. He ate grilled meat and both fresh and dry dates. … He did not refuse good food, and he did not go out of his way to seek it, rather he would eat what was available, but if it was not available he would be patient, and he would tie a stone to his stomach because of hunger. Three new moons in a row would be sighted, and no cooking fire would be lit in his house. End quote.

          Does it mean its halal?

The quote merely mentions ethics and it is from Zaad al Ma'aad, a Hanbali book of law.

Here is what hanafis say about rabbit:

Below is a listing of some foods that Rasulullah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) is reported to have eaten or recommended to others. [i]
A more comprehensive list along with further details is mentioned in the 1st volume of Shamail-e-Kubra (written in Urdu)by Mufti Muhammad Irshad Ahmad Qasimi from which the following list was compiled. An English translation of the above is titled: The Sublime Conduct of Nabi (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) – Volume 1.
              MEAT:
Camel, chicken, rabbit, antelope, mountain goat, fish, partridge and hubara (this is a bird but there is difference of opinion regarding what type of bird it is. Some have defined it as quail, others as a type of goose, and yet others have described it as a brownish bird that flies very fast).
As for beef, there is no conclusive evidence states that Rasulullah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) ate beef.
However, it is proven that he (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) did slaughter a cow and beef was placed on his' (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) tablecloth as stated by Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (may Allah have mercy on him) in Bawadir un Nawadir, pg. 356.

It still states that he ate rabbit.

I don't get it. You give out an explanation of how he preferred rabbit meat and then you ask whether it's halal or not.. Are you not confident in your source or your own interpretation of basic English??

To me, the meat of an animal that eats another animal is dirty. Rabbits are vegetarians, therefore, clean. And they are delicious too.

No you take the literal meaning. i said we eat it and so do our neighbors, means in our area it is considered halal and very delicious.. and people here are predominantly hanafi, deobandi and religious, that means it is halal in hanafi.
we are not leaving in a jungle or some punjab where people are not aware of the basic islam
                      understand??
though some people don't eat it for their personal reason, rabbit meat is very soft like a sponge and this is turn off for some people.
also rabbit cry like a little kid when slaughtering. that's also a turn off.
