Saudi preacher gets fine and short jail term for raping and killing daughter

Public anger has gripped Saudi Arabia after a prominent preacher who raped and beat to death his 5-year-old daughter was sentenced to a few months in jail and a $50,000 fine – known as 'blood money' – to compensate the victim's relatives.

According to Islamic law, the 'blood money' can be paid in lieu of the death penalty. The preacher's fine was reportedly half the usual amount because the victim was a girl.

Saudi preacher Fayhan Ghamdi, a frequent guest on Muslim TV networks, confessed to using cables and a cane to inflict the injuries, AFP reported, quoting activists from the group ‘Women to Drive.’

Ghamdi reportedly doubted that his daughter, Lama Ghamdi, was a virgin, and forced her to undergo a medical inspection.

In December 2011, Lama was admitted to hospital with multiple injuries, including a crushed skull, broken ribs and left arm, and extensive bruising and burns, according to the activist group. Hospital worker Randa Kaleeb said that the girl's back was broken, and that she had been raped "everywhere."

The hospital told the victim's mother that her child's “rectum had been torn open and the abuser had attempted to burn it closed,” AFP reported on Saturday.

In October 2012, the girl died from her injuries. The following November, the father was arrested. The judge ruled that the "blood money and the time the defendant had served in prison since Lama's death suffices as punishment," activists reported.

The incident sparked public anger in Saudi Arabia, prompting an online Twitter campaign calling for more severe punishment for violence against women and children. The 'Women to Drive' campaign, launched by women's rights activist Manal Sharif, has demanded the creation of legislation that would criminalize violence against women and children.

The petition is circulating on Twitter under the hashtag 'Ana Lama' – "I am Lama" in Arabic.

The issue has gained widespread traction in Saudi Arabia, and authorities promised to set up a 24-hour hotline that will take calls regarding child abuse.

so much child/sexual abuse in that country, everything is hidden behind veils. Most of the violence is not reported because of honour issues, that is the case unfortunately in most muslim countries, it's just part of the culture now to be like that

Nice try Atheist Ikhwani. Your attempt here, is to convince simple minded people that Arabs are monsters and that the religion has a deficit in it due to this guy getting off. The reality is far different. The Quranic text that defines the Qisas indicates that in the ideal situation the death penality versus blood wit cannot be decided by a court but the ultimate decision for clemency of life versus death rests with the family of the dead - and they cannot be intimidated. The Quran itself directly addresses this:

"O ye who believe, equivalence is the law decreed for ye when dealing with murder - the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. If one is pardoned by the victim's kin, an appreciative response is in order, and an equitable compensation shall be paid. This is an alleviation from thine Lord and mercy. Anyone who transgresses beyond this incurs a painful retribution"

The ayah only addresses life or death and does not delineate or limit a jurist imposing jail time or other measures.

You also fail to emphasize the first sentence, indicating that the Saudi people are not animals as you choose to depict them in your racist fantasies:

"Public anger has gripped Saudi Arabia..."

Meaning two things: The Saudi public sees this as unjust and the way that public views shariat law indicates they view this as a gross misapplication.

Oh and by the way my little Atheist Militant, it happens in the West as well:

Priest convicted of rape avoids prison

          "
The defense argued that other than raping Goodner, Ewing has led a good life and there's no risk of him offending again.
"For the last 30 some odd years, Mr. Ewing, by everybody's estimation, has led an absolutely blameless, positive life," said defense attorney David Lambertus.
The judge agreed, and said probation would be a tougher sentence in the long-run, especially because jail time is not guaranteed.
"They won't hold anybody in the penitentiary on what I consider very serious, dangerous violations and now you compare that to Mr. Ewing who has no criminal history," said Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Martin McDonald."

From a Saudi blog, he grew up without his parents and was addicted to alcohol and drugs, and was promiscuous. So he was a fake Muslim. I wouldn't doubt it if he was recruited by some foreign intelligence agency to do this.

Good info. You basically proved the point - he's some fool masquerading as an Islamic Scholar. That's not Islam's fault and it certainly isn't genuine ulemah's fault either.

Just as it isnt the Church's fault that some priest decides to call himself a man of the cloth but really does nothing to warrant the title.

Mullah Barakzai, you got trapped into what Joey_Gladstonezai laid down for you. The article he has quoted contains more incriminating information. What would be your answer to the points below. And my intentions in posting that news were not presenting Arabs or other Muslims in bad light. The article is openly available on the Internet also on the news media of Muslim countries.

I don't think the opinion of a Akhwani would carry more weight than the interpretation of the Wahabi scholar of Saudi court. I would be happy though if you could make him change his verdict and teach him the proper Sharia.

Fayhan Al Ghamdi was held for few months in jail waiting for his trail. Al Ghamdi then was released from prison few days ago. The court ordered him to pay ( Diyah) which is blood money paid for the family of the victim. Ironically, according to the law the Murderer will share the money he is paying since he is the father; he is part of the family.

According to the discriminatory sharia law the Diyah ( the blood money ) must be 400.000 SR if the victim is a male and half of the money which equals 200.000 SR if the victim is a female.

Read the article posted the article by Gladstonezai more thoroughly and completely.

The Famous Saudi preacher Fayhan Al Ghamdi who appears on various preaching TV channels tortured his 5 years old daughter to death because he was suspicious of her virginity. According to the medic…

again you are proving to be a wahabhi cult follower as usual. The main problem is not what the man did, it is the sentence he got. Saudi wahabhi kingdom is known to for it's injustice in sentencing people, the whole system there is corrupt and messed up, yet people like you will always be wahabhi slaves.

I am actually glad that saudis themselves are protesting this sentencing, at least they are opening their eyes to the rampant injustices in the kingdom, maybe something will change there soon. I hope there is some kind of a revolution, but I know people like you will be against it, you are afraid that your wahabhi masters will loose their power/influence.

Barakzai Maulana Saib, many Alims have had hedonist tendencies in the past---that doesn't mean they have been recruited by foreign powers to malign Islam. One should play the role of a reformer instead of the role of an insecure conspiracy-theory stick-en reactionary Taleb of village madrassa.

There you go again. First, man up, put on some big boy britches and then come and talk to a man like a man.

You have twice now been proven a lying, f-cking idiot. Like some simpleton you flared up under the Mali thread indicating you are nothing more than a bleeting sheep without evidence or the ability to discern what the facts were and are.

Just three or 4 posts up you were raving about how the Saudis were apart of this and deploring the whole population, proving that Karachiwaal are as dumb as everyone claims they are.

Now, when you actually read the sentence pointed out to you - you know you turned out to be a moronic follower instead of a leader and dont know how to save face.

next time you talk - open your mouth instead of that flatulating anus you claim is one.

Uh, my little militant atheist pet - it is you that needs to read. So you are telling me that because a Saudi Court - clearly maligned by the Saudi people, using a jurist from the Saudi ulemah who everyone from the US to the Salafi to the atheists to the gnostists have tried to malign and castigate - decided to interpret the shariah as the father/murderer as "a part of the family" that this is the spirit or sense of the Quranic text?

Would you like to elucidate how the Quranic ayah or any part of hadith literature allows for this?

Sorry militant atheist/ wannabe fake sufi - your attempt to malign the Quran and the Arab peoples backfired.

Rather, folks like Mr. Gladstonezai appear to have been able to discern Islam apart from the man... but we can let him comment.

Imam Malik has elucidated that the father who kills a son is NOT immune from the death penalty and cannot use the "Toramana Loophole."

And that is even in regard to a son.

And who better than the Prophet to note the discrepency in your backward brain than to rebuke you with:

The killer does not inherit from the one whom he killed.” [Ad-Daaraqutni and Al-Bayhaqi]

and this matters why??? Because the Quran itself says:

"And slay not the life which Allah hath forbidden save with right. Whoso is slain wrongfully, We have given power unto his heir, but let him not commit excess in slaying. Lo! he will be helped." (Surah 17)

Oooops; you shot from the hip and now look sheepish:
                              The result
Islam: 1 in the victory column vs Toramana (aka militant atheist): 0

How does it feel to take on the Quran and continuously lose again and again?

Isn't it time you gave up?
