didn't watch the video but it really depends, the problem is there are so many interpretation of Islam out there, we have the Taliban or Saudi extreme interpretation which obviously wouldn't work in the modern era, any sane person will realize this. Than we have the interpretation which like the guy in the video follows, or guys like Hamza Yousuf etc... that interpretation is more modern and logical and can work and has worked in modern times, but unfortunately the extremists still have the most say in the muslim worldLast edited by Karachi; 01-08-2013, 08:36 PM.

By that account, nor has any other system used for ruling.Originally posted by Badlun View PostIslam as a system of belief, worship and morality has always worked but its so called politics, economics, culture, society etc have never worked and will never work because Islam is not meant for these aspects of life.

This makes no sense to me. Islam is a complete way of life and a total system. This view is distinctly secular in that it limits Islam exclusively to a mere belief, form of worship and system of morality. However, we know that the Shariah given to us by Allah (SWT) also governs us in other aspects of life and specifically in those aspects that you mentioned as Islam failing in. But Islam has failed in no way, humanity has failed to observe Islam properly. The Shariah even governs our economy and all aspects of economics, despite your claim that Islam was "not meant" to govern in this area.Originally posted by Badlun View PostIslam as a system of belief, worship and morality has always worked but its so called politics, economics, culture, society etc have never worked and will never work because Islam is not meant for these aspects of life.

Then why is usury (interest, sud) explicitly forbidden in the Quran? Isn't usury part of economics? or is it just a cultural thing?Originally posted by Badlun View PostIslam as a system of belief, worship and morality has always worked but its so called politics, economics, culture, society etc have never worked and will never work because Islam is not meant for these aspects of life.
All aspects of life a driven by certain morality and belief and things do overlap. Even atheists have morals and beliefs which guide their decisions in politics, economics and other aspects of life. It is absurd to seperate one's principles, beliefs and convictions from ones decision making. Everyone has the subjective morality which guides their actions.
One thing I agree on is though that economists should drive the economy and not mullahs like the Taliban did. At the same time there should be guidance for the economists from the religious people so they don't go against the rules of God. These rules in sharia are there for a purpose, they are not there for story telling and fairytales.

In this sentence given above is the answer
All aspects of life a driven by certain morality and belief and things do overlap.
Morality is everywhere and its fountainhead can be religion(religious ethics) or philosophy( Ethics as a branch of Philosophy) or Secular ethics. Even society, culture also play a role in morality and some times norms, mores, values, traditions, crimes, sins, justice, evils overlap.
Wherever we see injunctions like prohibition of usury , they have moral underpinning in religion. Focus is morality, justice not an economic system.
You can control humans by religion or by law or by motivation(management) but economics, politics, society, culture, science, philosophy, psychology etc are pure independent disciplines and have nothing to do with the religion or Islam.
Islam is a complete code of life but only in beliefs, worship and morality. For other aspects we have to consult specialists in those fields not Mullas.

still working but pure Islamic theocracy never functioned. Even chritian theocracy functioned in past and recently I saw it functioning with my own eyes in Vatican city but when a Mulla ruled a Muslim country, I do not know.

Can you please show me anywhere in Quran or any other original religious text of Islam where the term Sharia has been used? This is a later day innovation and especially a trick by Mullas to grab economic, political, social and other power by the name of Sharia. There is no Sharia in Islam. Quran has used the word Deen which is equivalent to religion. Quran has mainly focused on beliefs, worship and morality. Other injunctions related to politics , economics etc have moral underpinning.Originally posted by MalangKhan View PostThis makes no sense to me. Islam is a complete way of life and a total system. What a horrible question. Of course it can't work. Look at turkey it is a predominately Muslim country and it is doing just fine. I hate how Islam is being blamed for a society's collapse. Blame the people not Islam."Revenge is a dish best served cold".

Badlun you keep repeating this but can you name any Islamic scholars from any school of Fiqh supporting your view?Originally posted by Badlun View PostIslam as a system of belief, worship and morality has always worked but its so called politics, economics, culture, society etc have never worked and will never work because Islam is not meant for these aspects of life.

sure, all of these systems have been working well, for limited periods and usually are good for some of the population and not for others.Originally posted by Badlun View PostWe see in history and today that systems like monorchy, dictatorship, martial law, democracy, aristocracy, plutocracy have worked and are

most countries are having difficulties right now, no matter what their ruling system is.
if you look at statistics for america, australia and britain, you will find that there are high rates of mental disorders, poverty, government control becoming more restrictive, bankers and multinationals gaining more control over government, unhealthy populations, child abuse, kidnappings, violence, rapes, and murders prolific, environmental damage and protests about them, etc.
BTW, badlun, what do you consider 'secular ethics'.

i don't understand why a point is considered credible only if it has been backed up by a scholar or someone in the past. is it not possible for a person to come up with a new great idea on his own??
and i agree with badlun on this. people should have the freedom to choose the religion that they want to follow and if a country is being governed by religious laws, they don't have that.
how would that be any different than those iranies who would choose to be sunies if they were given a choice?? which form of islam would you enforce?? how would you choose that?? where would the non muslims of that country go to??
does that bring people together or split them apart??
faye, what is your religion??
