I have no time to find a shaiykh; if someone could either look this up or ask someone who is knowledgabe (provide references if possible).
I am faced with the following scenarios:
1) When I am in the hospital; its a 1000 bed hospital and I am getting paged nearly 100 times a night for generally serious issues. I must return a page within 5 minutes. So when I pray isha: I do 4 rakah and then for the witr I shorten it to 1 rakah and I dont do the sunnah.
If I am pre- a 30 hour call night and it is getting late; at home I do the same.
I know the shafi folk do odd number witr rakah as the Prophet was seen to have done so. This is why I do this.
Is this acceptable: 4 rakah farz and 1 witr rakah instead of 3?
2) When doing wudhu in the hospital: the bathrooms are dirty; taking socks off means exposing my feet to the filth on the bathroom floor. I know that there are traditions in which shoes that one can ambulate in for miles can be kept on and wet hands passed over them. However, I do have to answer bodily functions during the day and I think taht condition applies if one does not break ceremonial purity (i.e. does not urinate or defecate).
So what I do is I do the audus and wudhu but I do not remove my shoes and I pass wet hands over them.
My reasoning is that if we can use dirt/earth for tayamum or even just touch our hands to the earth - that since I do 95% of teh wudhu; I can do tayamum like actions over the feet.
Otherwise, in the hospital - this would require removal of the shoes - socks ---> laying out rows of tissues ---> many observers would interrupt ---> pager would go off many many times.
So bottom line is I do the wudhu up to the washin gof the feet and pass wet hands over my danscos.
