  • Prayer Question

I have no time to find a shaiykh; if someone could either look this up or ask someone who is knowledgabe (provide references if possible).

I am faced with the following scenarios:

    1) When I am in the hospital; its a 1000 bed hospital and I am getting paged nearly 100 times a night for generally serious issues. I must return a page within 5 minutes. So when I pray isha: I do 4 rakah and then for the witr I shorten it to 1 rakah and I dont do the sunnah.

If I am pre- a 30 hour call night and it is getting late; at home I do the same.

I know the shafi folk do odd number witr rakah as the Prophet was seen to have done so. This is why I do this.

Is this acceptable: 4 rakah farz and 1 witr rakah instead of 3?

    2) When doing wudhu in the hospital: the bathrooms are dirty; taking socks off means exposing my feet to the filth on the bathroom floor. I know that there are traditions in which shoes that one can ambulate in for miles can be kept on and wet hands passed over them. However, I do have to answer bodily functions during the day and I think taht condition applies if one does not break ceremonial purity (i.e. does not urinate or defecate).

So what I do is I do the audus and wudhu but I do not remove my shoes and I pass wet hands over them.

My reasoning is that if we can use dirt/earth for tayamum or even just touch our hands to the earth - that since I do 95% of teh wudhu; I can do tayamum like actions over the feet.

Otherwise, in the hospital - this would require removal of the shoes - socks ---> laying out rows of tissues ---> many observers would interrupt ---> pager would go off many many times.

So bottom line is I do the wudhu up to the washin gof the feet and pass wet hands over my danscos.

It is reported from Imam As Shafi (rah) : That witr means one,and Allah is one, therefore he said i have decided for myself one raka.

Witr are odd numbers (in pakhto tooq) one,three,five....

It is indeed reported in the authentic hadiths that the Prophet (pbuh) prayed one raka for witr,as qouted below

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Witr is one rak'ah at the end of the night.” Narrated by Muslim, 752. And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The night prayers are two (rak’ahs) by two, but if one of you fears that dawn is about to break, let him pray one rak’ah to make what he has prayed odd-numbered.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 911; Muslim, 749. If a person limits himself to praying one rak’ah, then he has performed the Sunnah. But Witr may also be three or five or seven or nine.

part of the fatawaa given by IslamQa

while the Fatawaa of Darul Uloom Deoband say the following :

1.is it permissible to read 1 rakat of witr namaz?

    (Fatwa: 1234/252=TL/1430)
It is unlawful to perform only one rak?ah witr, the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) prohibited performing single rak'ah.

Also the last and best number of witr is reported three,it is more favourable and done by all the people, except for the shafi.

    2)

It is also questioned here :

Doing wudhu is no problem with wet hands (above and below the socks). The hadith is narrated by Magheera bin shaba r.a,jabir bin abdullah r.a and bilal r.w.Its permissible...I didn look further deep.MASAH over amama (shamla) is also allowed in certain occasions. So its allowed for you...since you have a genuine reason.Prophet mohammad pbuh also did masah on socks at the time of FATAH E MAKKAH.(victory of makkah)....despite of any school of thought...u can do.

I have ahadeeths n urdu language. And here i think i need to have in english as well.

Rang our Afghan Pashtun...Deobandi Abu Hanifa Masjid.

The Alim said its better if you read...kazza salah

        if that's the...case.

        Make up for it...later.

The 4 Farz and 3 Witr should be read...full.

Yes, you can read one witr. Ive read it in taraweeh behind the imam.

witr has to be an odd number.

              reference for your pursual, Doc.

              The number of rak’ahs:
The minimum number of rak’ahs for Witr is one rak’ah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Witr is one rak'ah at the end of the night.” Narrated by Muslim, 752.
