That depends on what you mean by "scholarly opinion" and who can be considered a scholar and by whom. Whatever the case, however, lemme think of the several different possibilities, though I expect there are more than what I can imagine at this moment:

- The bead is a must for every Muslim male
- The beard is sunnah but more than highly recommended
- The beard is neither sunnah nor fard; it's purely optional, and if you choose to keep one, it's no better or worse than not having one.
