Define peace.Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.
A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai
For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."
The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

This is my personal opinion from my limited knowledge of Islam, Islam is a religion of Justice, to achieve justice, some times you have to be violent and this is allowed in Islam. The end goal of Islam is defiantly peace, but the immediate goal is "justice", if there is no justice, there will be no "peace". Once justice is established, peace must be established.

True, those are part of Islam no doubt, but I am looking at peace from of a political angle in IslamOriginally posted by کیش View PostWell, if you think about the "5 pillars" of Islam its nothing but peaceful: Believing in the lord, praying 5X, Fasting, paying Zakat, and performing pilgrimage.
These 5 pillars do not harm anyone.

Read about the the Prophets emigration to Yathrib. He packed a peace deal with the 3 largest Jewish tribes, and the residents there lived in peace. The Jewish tribes slowly started to plot to assassinate Muhammad (PBUH) (plotting with the Qureish as well), whatever happened to them was of their own faults.Originally posted by Karachi View PostTrue, those are part of Islam no doubt, but I am looking at peace from of a political angle in Islam
The Prophet also made (or tried) to honor peace with the idolators, they kept on breaking and scheming to destroy Islam, so their fate was due to their own hands as well.
The Prophets war strategy was to attack the enemy before the enemy can attack you. The raids that led to Badr were also justified, as the Muhajirin left Mecca and their properties were looted by the idolators.
Even the Muslims skirmishes with the Byzantium empire was the result of the Byzantiums killing the emissary send by Muhammad.Last edited by کیش; 04-15-2012, 10:54 PM.

There's nothing in our book, the Quran -- you call it 'Ko-ran' -- that teaches us to suffer peacefully. Our religion teaches us to be intelligent. Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery. That's a good religion."
malcolm xThere are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

Karachi, there's a very good way of answering this question.
Of course, the first step is to know your audience. An average European or American would be under-informed about Islam and, in some cases, whatever they know may come from Fox News, Jihad Watch or Geert Wilders. In any case, they will not have a positive view of Islam, given what they watch in the news.
In fact, many people will throw stuff at you like, "Mohammad married a 6 year old girl", "Banu Quraiza was massacred", "Islam allows slavery", "Hadith number x and Ayat number y preach violence and hatred", etc.
Most people retort this by citing the more violent passages of the Old Testament or the events of the Crusades and the Inquisitions. But that's not really a response at all.
But no matter how biased a person may be, if he cites sources such as the Quran and the Hadith to make his case that Islam is not a peaceful religion, he is, at the same time, deliberately ignoring more than 2/3rds of the Quran and the Hadith, which are the parts that invoke Muslims to respect their parents, be kind towards the vulnerable, live in peace, to not show off, to not spend uselessly, to care for one's community, to be just to Muslims and non-Muslims alike, to not be racist, to be good towards women, etc, etc.
So, in the end, it comes down to two things: one - which parts you choose to follow and choose to ignore and two - interpretation. In that sense, Islam is just as much a religion of peace or violence as Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism or Shiaism (see what I did there?). It depends on the follower."If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".
"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".

They seperated themselves from the overall muslims,by naming themselves shia or the party of Ali ibn Abi Talib (rad).

Islam is not a religion of peace but a religion of bringing peace though justice, when justice is in place, only then can peace and contentness of the heart come about.
If Islam was solely focussed on being peaceful - we would hermits in monasteries devoid of any worldly interaction finding "peace".
And what is the biggest injustice that Islam seeks to correct? To ensure the oneness of Allah.

Islam is NOT a religion of peace.
It is a peaceful religion.
Meaning that it enjoins peace with peaceful people and it enjoins war with the warmongers who oppress us.
Wait, it's better than that.
Islam enjoins our community to be the most peaceful people among humanity and it enjoins our community to be the most brave and ruthless warriors against the people who oppress us.
Humiliating them on battlefield is a matter of pride for us, we are not supposed to turn the other cheek.
(This pride is not a sin because we do it all for the Glory of Allah Almighty. We are not proud of humiliating them, we are proud to see Allah Almighty delivering justice with our hands.)
That makes perfect sense.
The golden rule is that we should never attack first. Some people say that the Prophet attacked the Polytheists first. That is false.
The polytheists attacked the muslims first. They broke the peace treaty by threatening the muslims.
None are alike those who worship The Creator alone and those who worship a part of the creation.
The disbelievers will say that Islam is a religion of militaristic zealots fighting to unite the world under one god.
Well, that's true.
And this is why our religion is much, much more superior than any other man made religious or political system.
Islam is the religion of Allah SWT. It belongs to Allah SWT.
It is not our religion. It does not belong to the muslims.
We have to do what Allah SWT commanded us, not following our passions.
All praise be to Allah SWT alone !Last edited by Al Hanif; 04-16-2012, 05:49 PM.

so in other words ...Islam is a religion of balance we do not stray to any extreme.
which means people who do whether it's the Taliban or Irshad Manji; are not embodying Islam.
He is no different than us,he blindly believes in the words of other men,:
