  • Thousands of US atheists turn out for 'Reason Rally'

Breaking news and analysis from Canada and around the world for politics, racial injustice, weather, lotto, science and more.

Thousands of atheists, agnostics and other non-believers turned out in the US capital on Saturday to celebrate their rejection of the idea of God and to claim a bigger place in public life.

The Reason Rally, sponsored by 20 atheist, secular and humanist groups, was billed as the biggest-ever "coming-out" party for the fastest-growing religious group in the United States -- those with no religion.

"There are too many people in this country who have been cowed into fear of coming out as atheists, secularists or agnostics," said the event's star turn, Richard Dawkins, the British scientist and best-selling atheist author.

"We are far more numerous than anybody realizes," he said, prompting a loud cheer from the youthful crowd that defied grey skies and drizzle for an afternoon of speeches, music and satire on the National Mall.
Jesse Galef of the Secular Student Alliance, a spokesman for the rally, told AFP he conservatively estimated the turnout at 10,000. The National Park Service, which oversees the mall, had issued a permit for 15,000.
In the center of the good-humored crowd rose a crucifix with an affixed sign that declared: "Banish the Ten Commandments to the dustbin of history." Other posters read: "Good without a god" and "Hi Mom! I'm an atheist."

"This country was not built on religion and God," said another of the day's speaker, Michael Shermer, a self-defined "skeptic" and columnist for the respected Scientific American magazine. "It was built on reason."
"God fixation won't fix our nation, because nothing fails like prayer," added Annie Laurie Gaylor of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, which is contesting Pennsylvania's declaration of 2012 as "the year of the Bible."

On the edges of the Mall, atheists engaged in vigorous debates with a handful of Christians who turned up with their own placards that read: "Study and obey the Bible" and "Jesus forgives sin."

"Jesus Christ is your only hope," exclaimed one soapbox preacher through a bullhorn. "Humble yourself today."

In no other Western country does religion figure so highly in society as in the United States, where "In God We Trust" appears on bank notes and "one nation under God" is part of the national Pledge of Allegiance.

Yet the most recent American Religious Identification Survey, published in 2009, found that Americans with no religious affiliations -- "the nones" in sociological jargon -- make up 15 percent of the total adult population.
"That is more than Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists combined and doubled," said David Silverman, president of American Atheists, which campaigns for the civil rights of non-believers.

David Roozen of the Hartford Institute for Religion Research in Connecticut said the number of Americans with no religious affiliation has "about doubled" in the last 20 years.

"It's probably the fastest-growing category of religion in the United States," the sociologist told AFP in a telephone interview earlier this week.

Silverman, who defines atheism simply as "the lack of belief in a god," said a deep-seated fear of prejudice and discrimination leads many Americans with no religious affiliation not to acknowledge themselves as atheists.

Such discrimination, atheists say, includes a virtual inability to serve in public office, the risk of being fired by a religiously devout employer, denial of reproductive health care and religiously biased school texts.

"These are battles that homosexuals have won, people of color have won, women have won," said journalist Jamila Bey, who recalled losing a job after her Christian boss learned she was an atheist. "We can't stay silent anymore."

"We are here to celebrate our belief in reason, science and the power of the human mind," comedian Paul Provenza said from the podium as raindrops fell. "We are here to say to elected politicians ... that there is a base for them to stand on to stand up to the religious right."

The rally's speakers, many wearing red to match the scarlet letter "A" adopted by the community as a sign of solidarity, touched on many issues that unite nontheists -- separation of church and state, science education, equality, rights for women and the influence of religion on politics, among them. Politics was a common theme, as many nontheists are concerned about the religiosity of the Republican presidential candidates.

is this anything like that rally by women before where they were proud to call themselves "sl*ts" and had the word painted on their stomachs as they marched along the street?

if so, i gotta see this.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

No President in the recent times has won an election without winning large swathes of southern states. Obama actually succeeded in turning the Carolinas. The reason he was able to do so was that McCaine was a moderate/liberal republican by their standards so it was like choosing between Pepsi and Diet Pepsi. With the economic turn, the general American mind also begins to worry more about that, coupled to the very successful get out the youth/vote Obama mounted.

The American psyche in the rural areas is still very suspicious of Hollywood or anything that threatens their access to God/Guns.... or threatens their right to hate gays.

If it was as black and white as these guys present then the abortion debate and gay marriage would be not even a debate at all.

Atheism in society is rising... not only in the US but also in Pakistan. In Pakistan the brutality of the Taliban is doing exactly the opposite of what it was meant to do. It is driving people away from Islam, from their own religion.

It is proof of the fact that imposing religion never actually works but instead works to weaken a cause.

How would I, an ex-Muslim atheist, want to raise my children? Like most Pakistani atheists, I am married to a Muslim spouse who is very sensitive about my atheism.

Do watch out for my next article. I was planning to contact some Pakistani atheists for it and asking them how much of a role the taliban and militancy has in their decision to quit Islam.

My point is not whether Atheism is a major force or not. It is simply that trying to impose religion or forcing it down the throats of others leads exactly to the opposite of what Islamists seek to achieve (making people follow Islam). Instead it makes people lose faith in Islam itself.

I believe you disagree with my point. That my friend is your choice. I can do nothing about the intolerance breeding within our people's minds.

Lets admit both are rising... I have seen an increased number of atheists in recent years who claim a Pakistani background while at the same time I have seen a rise in conservative thought and as we can all see terrorism. I would believe these are two extreme reactions to extreme/incorrect actions/policies committed/conducted:
                              1) By the government
                              2) By the Taliban.

Everything has a cause and effect my friend. The Taliban slaughtering innocents in the name of Islam is pushing people, the liberals mainly, away from Islam. These atheists converted from something. They were originally Muslims. It is even believed Nadeem F Paracha is an atheist though he will never admit it until he remains in Pakistan. When Taliban bomb innocents and blow themselves up in front of women and children it causes people to get disillusioned with Islam itself in some cases.

The governments policies on the other hand, courting the US at the cost of its own people is indeed resulting in more fanaticism and intolerance in society. That I admit. Its impossible for the government to explain to the fanatics today why it was right to go blundering into Afghanistan in the 1980's to fight the Soviets but is wrong now when the Americans have invaded.

So both fanaticism and ultra liberalism are rising as direct reactions to World politics today.
