I think I am taking this out of context, I don't want him to appear like an evil-man. He was giving a lecture, so he said, look at the Muslim world. They blow up themselves and say they are going to heaven. So I interrupted and said, Islam is a religion of peace. And then that is when he sort of just went of on me.............

Qrratugai, I just want to know how to convince this man that is not Islam. I know what he is going to argue.. He is going to say its your interpretation of it. Those people blowing up themselves consider themselves as Muslims.
You should not lie to yourself. Dont discuss religion with people if you are so totally ignorant of Islam.

What Islam means and what it stands for is not a matter you can have different opions of. Its not like the smell of a flower you either like or dislike.

There are specific Ayat in the Qur'an that commands Muslims to fight. So to go around telling people that Islam means peace, you would be lying. Since everybody knows that our prophet muhammad saww faught people and engaged in battles with the polytheists.

And so did the 4 righteous caliphs fight against infidels.

So for you to go around telling people there is no war in Islam and it is totally peaceful, you would be lying.

Don't do that. Go study the biography of prophet Muhammad saww and read the tafsir( link) of Qur'an ( link) and then when you have done that, confront your professor.

Islam is most certainly a religion of peace and justice. Islam came to bring peace and justice to the world, and to do away with injustice.

Yes, well this argument is also used by some members of this forum who have become apostates and ridicule Quran recitation.

They attribute all the evil of the world to Islam and they advocate mimicking the likes of your professor so we can become modern, developed and civlized.

Get use to it. I am sure you will meet people here on Pashtunforums who will make your teacher look like a sweetheart.

And to answer you question: You should not engage in discussions with people who are deliberately trying to use their position as teachers and professors to vent their frustration and to provoke you and insult you.

You just tell him that Western societies are in decline because of their moral corruptions. And thats why people are flocking towards Islam. So he better start acting normal because soon Islam will take over.

What I mean when I say Islam doesn't mean peace is that Islam is a book - the Quran. Two people will read it and come up with different interpretations. Overwhelmingly though, people use it as a source of good - they take whatever moral values they have and find approval for them in the Quran. There are a few people who read it and are inspired to commit acts of terrorism. But out of 1.5 billion, they are perhaps a few thousand, not more.

As for 'why they're blowing themselves up,' I've talked about it above.

What an arrogant giraffe! Tell him to look no further than Christian Rwanda and Congo, where millions have been killed, raped, made homeless, etc. Or perhaps he could enlighten you more on how the atheist USSR and Christian USA had millions killed in their proxy wars during the Cold War, which ended only 2 decades earlier - it's not ancient history.

The Third World has massive problems and it just so happens that this deprived area is Muslim. But to suggest that their problems are only because of Islam is not just unfair but something that's not supported by evidence.

Politely explain to your professor that that's simply not true. Terrorist acts are committed by all groups. Unfortunately, Muslim grievances around the world are many. The foreign policies of certain powerful nations, including the U.S., are oppressive towards Muslims. Some individuals and fringe groups use un-Islamic means for political purposes. These are a minority. The vast majority of Muslims are upright, peace-loving citizens.

The question is so complicated, most scholars have failed to come up with a decent answer. So don't except yourself to be able to answer this.

Most important thing for you is to learn about your religion as much as you can and to practice upon that knowledge. Let professors and others who mock your religion aside. They should not be of your consern.

Is it atheism that makes Norway and Sweden successful nations? How does one come to a conclusion as to what success can be attributed to? Would such a conclusion not require the scholarship and study of scholars from anthropology, history, philosophy, politics, and many other sciences?

There are some misconseptions that lead to this conclusion. When I had to explain this to a Jewish teacher at university and many classmates, they didn't even know how to define Islam or religion, let alone understand the importance of the concept of religion to a majority of people. Some of the misconceptions include that Islam is a constructed culture designed to parralel and compete against the rapid modernisation and economic superiority of the West. In fact, Islam is a religion based on monotheism, a concept that Muslims believe that there is one God. An Australian Researcher once said: "The media is seen as a complicit and crucial actor in this conspiracy to destroy Islam." This merely accentuates that language and bias employed in media coverage leads to issues like division between the East and West, placing them at odds with each other. And that if the media is the main medium people turn to to obtain information, it is quite flawed, and the continuation of such stereotypes will continue to spread. The generalising and stereotypes that many have towards Islam and Muslims, ranging from all Muslims being represented as terrorists,or even the confusion that all Arabs and Muslim vice versa exist in many academic institutions today, and are being emphasised day in day out. History tells us that during the years the Westerners term the Dark Ages, Muslims were emerging from the shadows with phenomenal advancements, in literature, architecture, science and technology. I suggest you study a bit about the Muslim heroes and their contribution to the various fields of education and economy, in particular the era of Muslims ruling Spain. There are many answers you will find, as I did.
