asSalamu `alaykum
The blessed month of Ramadan is almost here and insha'Allah I would like to encourage myself and others to really look at themselves and think about what they would like to change during this 'month of change'. Many Muslims simply take this month as one in which food, drink and relations with the spouses should be refrained from while those with a little better approach increase in the recitation of the Qur'an, dhikr, nafil prayers and other forms of worship, which is excellent, but end up missing the whole purpose of this month, a month which comes around only one time a year. The main purpose of these 30 days is to become muttaqoon (God-conscious, God-fearing individuals) as Allah ta`ala has mentioned in the verse pertaining to fasting:
"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous" [2:183]
And to fulfill this purpose, an increase in worship alone will not do the job but rather it is the abstention from sins of all types. The main two advices that the scholars and righteous give in order to aid us in fulfilling this noble purpose is:
1) Refrain from mixing. By keeping to yourself you are aided greatly in staying away from many sins.
2) Keep occupied at all times. By holding fast to a timetable, you will safeguard yourself from engaging in futile activities. As a result, you will accomplish much and derive much benefit from this month.
With this in mind, what change would you like to see in yourself by the end of this month?(insha'Allah this will encourage others to improve themselves when they see others striving to be better Muslims)
I'll start:
Improving my akhlaq and adab, especially with my family
Speaking less, avoiding futile talk
