Fair enough question. The issue is you providing corroborating evidence that this is her intention. i don't believe in the merits of references which is probably as to why i never made it to high school. Ridley was an initiating member of a dominant Women's Journalism organization much prior to her conversion. Naomi Wolf defended her and faced a furious onslaught of abuse subsequently. She also appears to have pissed off some people at Al Jazeera and was let go based on what was called her confrontational manner, so her nature appears to be like George Galloway's. being a journalist, she should have known better than dissecting the behavior of people who were keeping her as a hostage that candidly...keeping her mouth shut was part of her job.i believe that is part of the job of a journalist...At the outset of the post 9/11 invasion a group of Christian missionaries held hostage by the Taliban. Two of the girls, Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry initially talked about how their captors, the Taliban, were extremely kind to them and buttressed Ridley's story: publicity, publicity..publicity... it's not like one of the talibs are going to emerge from somewhere and claim to have treated her differently than she claims...

        http://edition.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0111/27/lkl.02.html

They noted that they were given a fair defense and termed it excellent, when they were provided a Pakistani defense lawyer, who, despite having sympathies for the Talibs, was vigorous in their defense. Subsequently, the American media had folks like Bill O Riley who accused them of being soft on the Taliban. Even then, their rhetoric only changed slightly where they insisted that they were well treated, but that the nicest men amongst the Taliban that gaurded them were not really Taliban in spirit. Here is a review of their recent book: really?? pakistanis in afghanistan get hanged upside down for being potential spies but missionaries get pakistaki lawyers?? are you sure they were not paid to put up a nice little stage show rather than defend the missionaries?? heck they could have been guests there and not even know it on their own..

"Their Taliban captors and interrogators are alternately Hogan’s Heroesesque bumblers and downright reasonable, even kind. Prison conditions are not much shabbier than those at some sleepaway camps, and royal in comparison to those of native women prisoners. yeah, native afghan woman prisoners don't have blond hair and blue eyes or pakistani lawyers so why should anyone bother with treating them like human beings let alone buy them candy...Heather and Dayna regularly send their female jailor to the market for provisions including candy bars, clothing, towels, makeup, and batteries for their walkman." and all this was done out of their generosity and nothing else??

It is notable that this trait is confirmed time and time again in the pre 9/11 invasion era even by non Muslim parliamentarians like the Afghan Sikh community leader:

        http://in.reuters.com/article/2010/0...49826020100702

What appears to be happening was predicted by Osama Bin Ladin's son in his interview with Rolling Stone. He noted that the old gaurd were actually very chivalrous and that as attempts were made to decapitate Taliban and Al Qaeda leadership as opposed to listening to their very legitimate demands about American/Western interventionalism, the new gaurd that fills the vaccum is filled with much more ferocious young men raised in the new era of war.

Paul Refsdahl appears to confirm this in his documentary Behind the Masks where the old gaurd Commander Duaran is far more friendly, leniant, and just than his cow boy young commander Omar. whatever...

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

OK so to summarize your response:
          1. Next time I prescribe a drug, I will make sure to note that DJZ says references are unnecessary.
          2. Spies in the state of war are hung... see the case of the Rosenbergs (that is reference) during the Cold War. As I noted, brutality toward missionaries and Sikhs has increased since the younger commanders have taken the helm.
          3. Their appearance may have played the part in that they were seen as guests as well as prisoners. Take for example the status of dark arabs that are given melmestia in the FATA tribal regions. For that matter, Sarah Palin was capitalizing off the story of the American soldier that was given melemstia as well. You are conflating two concepts and assuming that the Taliban were treating them better simply because they were white, etc. It could very well have been due to the fact that these were guests and prisoners.

On the other hand the Commander Omar was clearly a creep.
One could detect this by his shifty look.
The others under Commander Davran seemed usual Pashtuns.

Omar saw Big $$$ flashing and Paul Refsdal was not smart to be too greedy to get more info.
He should have quit while he was ahead and never agreed to meet up with Odious Omar.

there is no proof about Omar ,seems to be the punchline of the story.
i dont have to believe the commnetary of the journalist without any proof.

                Agreed in general.
What are you saying, though ?
Omar was a decent person, and the kidnapping tale was made up
to attract CNN to pick up the story?
After all it was aired in Australia, and much later in the US
The feature focused a lot on Paul Refsdal's captivity tale.

to say there is differences between taliban, the good and bad taliban.
omar is not exactly how he is portrait,he is a fun guy but as you can see from the video shots,it seems he is shown as this wild person while to me he is not like that but funny and humble.
you should watch the whole doc, there is some twisting.

GYE: where is the REST of the doc, then ?
                      That's fair.
I did wonder why they showed him to be so OBVIOUSLY a sinister character.

                      These video makers...

Guess you're going to have to go back to school for cameraman studies,
                      GYE!
I can see you have a true calling for this.

We can say we knew you when you were back analyzing documentaries for us here!

I much appreciate your assessments, thank you, by the way.

Why did you like Omar though ?

There are some reported but rare side effects of great meds like Lipitor (cholesterol med). The patient population will refuse such drugs or ace inhibitors (blood pressure med) based on hearsay, concerned that they will go into florid liver failure, etc and we talk to them about the occurence of side effects and weighing the risks versus benefit ratio. Other times they see drug company commercials or lawyer commercials about medications and side effects and suddenly stop taking meds they have been taking for years tipping them into heart failure. So we reference for them various studies that have been done and talk about the rates of occurence.
