i love to hear about the kuffar converting to islam but i fear their initial exposure to the faith is by salafis and other such extremists.

maybe you are confusing wahabi with salafi,they are two different thing.
salafi is someone who is following Islam as the first 4 generations of Islam.

Wahab is the name of Allah. Allah is AL Wahab. ANd he is not a salafi.

If you mean Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab, yes, he was a Salafi. And Salafi means, someone who follows the way of the the salaf-us-Saalih (the pious predecessors). The first 3 generation of Muslims and those who follow their way.

But Shi'ites, infidels, apostates, moderate muslims and people who have colaborated with the invaders call people Wahabi.

Because Imam Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab was very harsh on polytheists.

the terms mean the same thing. the word wahabi got a bad wrap so they started calling themselves salafi. now salafi has the same bad wrap because they arent fooling anyone, they will probably start calling themselves something else any time now.
