But Islamic societies cannot be classified as civilized, not to a sane person. Stonings, beheadings, poverty, oppression, these things aren't civilized, modern city is basically paradise compared to those places.

Compared to a violent society whose response to anger is violence, who uses religion as a tool to subjugate, or countries that have an amoral system of 'justice' -- I would say that a culture that seeks to protect and maximize the access and free practice of basic, universal human rights is fairly civilized.

Oh? so you are only going to count the acts that are deemed immoral, illegal, and only practiced by a few to judge an entire culture?

I think you do not want to start down this road, as I can bring up acts equally atrocious, but considered moral and legal in the middle east.

Every act you listed is illegal, and considered wrong by the west -- but the examples cited by imb706 are not acts of some minority of law breakers -- but often times are the *LAWS* of the country -- and in most of these cases, these laws are based on Islam.

It's not what Islam prohibits that is deemed uncivilized -- it is the punishments for those that do not follow the rules of Islam that are uncivilized. It is the activities *supported* by Islam that are uncivilized -- the barbaric laws, the horrendous punishments.
