If a student doesn't have the right to express and justify his own opinion, even different from propounded by famous scholars, time to think of changing faculty or university. Said was only one of many scholars involved in Orientalism. Student of Oriental studies should know his theories and others, but doesn't have to agree with them. Quite rebellious way of thinking but all the logical discussions and undermining the existing dogmas leads to the development of science in every field. It's also what Said did - criticized the existing approaches to Orient.
