WikiLeaks cables: Saudi princes throw parties boasting drink, drugs and sex

Royals flout puritanical laws to throw parties for young elite while religious police are forced to turn a blind eye

In what may prove a particularly incendiary cable, US diplomats describe a world of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll behind the official pieties of Saudi Arabian royalty.
Jeddah consulate officials described an underground Halloween party, thrown last year by a member of the royal family, which broke all the country's Islamic taboos. Liquor and prostitutes were present in abundance, according to leaked dispatches, behind the heavily-guarded villa gates.

The party was thrown by a wealthy prince from the large Al-Thunayan family. The diplomats said his identity should be kept secret. A US energy drinks company also put up some of the finance.

"Alcohol, though strictly prohibited by Saudi law and custom, was plentiful at the party's well-stocked bar. The hired Filipino bartenders served a cocktail punch using sadiqi, a locally-made moonshine," the cable said. "It was also learned through word-of-mouth that a number of the guests were in fact 'working girls', not uncommon for such parties."
The dispatch from the US partygoers, signed off by the consul in Jeddah, Martin Quinn, added: "Though not witnessed directly at this event, cocaine and hashish use is common in these social circles."
The underground party scene is "thriving and throbbing" in Saudi Arabia thanks to the protection of Saudi royalty, the dispatch said. But it is only available behind closed doors and for the very rich.

More than 150 Saudi men and women, most in their 20s and 30s, were at the party. The patronage of royalty meant the feared religious police kept a distance. Admission was controlled through a strict guest list. "The scene resembled a nightclub anywhere outside the kingdom: plentiful alcohol, young couples dancing, a DJ at the turntables and everyone in costume."

The dispatch said the bar featured a top shelf of well-known brands of liquor, the original contents reportedly replaced with sadiqi. On the black market, they reported, a bottle of Smirnoff vodka can cost 1,500 riyals (£250) compared with 100 riyals (£16) for the locally-made vodka.
In a venture into Saudi sociology, the diplomats explained why they thought their host was so attached to Nigerian bodyguards, some of whom were working on the door. "Most of the prince's security forces were young Nigerian men. It is common practice for Saudi princes to grow up with hired bodyguards from Nigeria or other African nations who are of similar age and who remain with the prince well into adulthood. The lifetime spent together creates an intense bond of loyalty"

The cable claimed it was easy for would-be partygoers to find a patron out of more than 10,000 princes in the kingdom. Some are "royal highnesses" with direct descent from King Abdul Aziz, while others are "highnesses" from less direct branches.

One young Saudi told the diplomat that big parties were a recent trend. Even a few years ago, he said, the only weekend activity was "dating" among small groups who met inside the homes of the rich. Some of the more opulent houses in Jeddah feature basement bars, discos and clubs. One high-society Saudi said: "The increased conservatism of our society over these past years has only moved social interaction to the inside of people's homes."

Many princes are dirty and take part in these activities.
At the same time, other princes are more sensible.

These Saudi-Arabs have an awkward culture where males party and visit prostitutes, but females are told to follow the "culture."

It looks like their "culture" is even breaking down more. So more the reason for these Thieve Kings to be removed from power and replaced with Muslim rulers.

      Get a life Toramana!...

you didn't have to bring the name "islamist" in your title you know. this is becoming really annoying. His deeds do not represent Islam or Muslims in general. you could have brought this issue in everyone's attention in order to discuss a saudi prince's character, but to name it Islamist... this tactic is really getting old.

I am going to report posts that are labelled one way or another to attack Islam or its principles... an individual's practice of Islam or lack of doesn't represent Islam!.

what does Islamist Elite mean anyway? Islamist Elite to Muslims are those individuals who practice Islam to the best of their ability, which he doesn't. his status, money and power does not make him an Islamist or and Islamist Elite.

Actually, Islamic Laws sometimes are used as a tool to terrorise people into submission and rule them without having to face any resistance. Just behead someone and chop the hand of someone publically and the masses will be terrored into subjugation. This is what Al-Qaueda and its Taleban foot soldiers are doing to common people in FATA...i.e., terrorise and force people into accepting the slavery of the Wahabi/Salafi clique. And this is what is happening in the holy land of Islam.

They are already Muslim rulers...Saudi-Arabia is ruled by an alliance of Wahabis and Al-Saud family....

^you keep making stupid posts... if only there were fines on everyone here for making a stupid post... u would be bankrupt.

people that have influence, power , and know how to play mind games with simple minded ordinary people, know how to use not only religious laws, but also racial differences, economic status, and class system as a tool to further their personal agenda. humans have been fooled for centuries... one way or another... but one thing is a fact... Islamic laws don't become corrupt or dirty when used n a wrong context... its the individual himself and the people that follow him, that become corrupt and dirty.

My purpose in giving that title to the thread was to draw attention to the acts of those so-called Muslims. Of course, good Muslims would not do that.

But Feroza, do you really agree with people hands being chopped or they beheaded or stoned to death for committing adultry or punished through hudood-law (when a women is not able to prove her innocense even if she has been sexually molested and is a victim, she is punished) ?

M16, you are absolutely right as why people take offense when the gray aspects are pointed to them. The reasons are emotional and egoistic instead of rational/realistic. When it comes to the realities of life in a puritonical state (of which the Taleban state is an example), I am quite sure, few will be willing to adjust to that kind of life. In Islam, music (listening or making) is forbidden, poetry is also not allowed, mixed gathering e.g. participation in forum where there are men is strictly prohibited, going out of home without a Muharam is also haram, ...and so also haram are painting, pictures, photography, etc.

What about watching TV, movies, etc.?

There is a book written titled "Bahisht-i-Zaiwar" by Mualana Ashraf Ali Thanavi (an Islamic scholar of Deoband) in which it says, women are not allowed any kind of education in Islam beyond basic arithmetic skills in order to keep the daily income/expenditure record of the household...

What about polygymy...Few khoryana/sisters here will be willing to be involved into a polygymous marriage...Nevertheless, it becomes an emotional or egoistic issue for us when others point to such things...

Mi6 and Toramana , seriously you guys are really being stupid.

So there are a few filthy princes and princesses partying it up. WHo said that Saudi Arabia which is ruled by enemies of the Ottomans was an Islamic utopia. I never said that.

Secondly, you both know very well that these princes are not islamists.
I didn't catch that because I am used to you guys attacking Islam freely without any action or warnings given to both of you.]

This is not legitimate questioning, but now you are trying to slander Islam by attaching it to filthy princes who are filthy and have nothing to do with Islam and Muslims!!!!

There is really no proper Muslim country right now, and no the Salafis should kick the thieve family out!!!!!!

You are confused. The Saudi Royal family is a family of sell outs. But you and I have different reasons for not liking them. You attach Islam wrongly to them. They do not represent Islam in any way.\

InshAllah, the true Muslims are returning.

Saudi Royal Family is actually an orthodox Muslim family that profess Wahabi/Salafi interpretation of Islam as you do.

I am a Muslim, and I only ascribe to Islam.

stop spreading nonsense and look at the secular filth cultures of the world instead, the one that these filthy princes and princesses (who prolly have sexually transmitted diseases ) wish to follow.

If anything the partying is an example of filthy secular culture and should serve as a warning to everyone here about the consequences of such actions.

These secular cultures don't pretend to be moralist like you ...Moreover, these secular cultures are based on the golden rule "what is good for me is good for others as well...what is bad for me is bad for others as well".

Now compare this with your ideology and use your mind instead of becoming emotional...

                            Toramana/MI6,

Shouldn't you two be happy? The Saudi Prince obviously doesn't agree with these "Islamist laws" and regulations practiced in their country. He is creeping in secularism/moderation into the Saudi society. I know, I know.... that's not what secularism is about, but neither what Islam or Muslims are about, nor are these guys representatives of it. Doesn't stop you from making the comparison though.

You guys should rejoice, he is doing exactly what you would like to see and allowed. What's with will all the moral objections?

I think it's best to keep what you consider good or bad for yourself to yourself and let others make their own mind. That should be the golden rule.
