  • Analysis of situation in Swat

    What Happened?

What happened in Swat was a drama staged by Pakistan military. The aims behind the drama were:

    1) Army had to restore their image lost during the Musharraf regime.

    2) They had to build army base in Swat.

    3) They had to get more dollars from US by showing them their concocted achievement in swat.

    How it happened?

They employed ISI stooges like Sufi Mohammad and Fazlullah to start indoctrinating the people with a terrorist version of Islam naming it Jihad.

They built FM station for one person to indoctrinate swati Pakhtuns with pro-establishment version of Islam. [It took the whole ANP govt to make one FM radio station].

When the stage got ripe they encashed it by killing hundreds of innocent Pakhtuns, target-killing dozens of nationalists, bought the loyalties of others like Afzal Khan, humiliating thousands of Pakhtun families and putting a halt to all development projects. The main culprits [Sufi Mohammad, Fazlullah] were never caught but given protection. One is in Pakhtunkhwa other in Afghanistan.

    Diagnosis of the situation

The main reasons of why Swatis fell victim to the atrocities of army as well as Taliban were due to two reasons:

    1) Failing to understand that Pakistan is not a state with an army but an army-with-a-state which is on the brink of collapse so it needs to make its grip stronger on Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan. If they do it directly then it seems occupation it adds to their problem hence they control these two provinces either via religious demagogues and sell outs like Sufi Mohammad and Fazlullah or via pro- establishment parties like ANP,JUI,PML [x,y,z,..].

    2) Failing to understand that Religion will ALWAYS be used against them, either to divide them, polarize them, weaken them or de-politicise them.

    Remedy

A strong intellectual, political and in the end agitational stand over the rights of Pakhtuns and Pakhtunkhwa [not just swat] hence strengthening the organic whole of Pakhtuns who could fight according to the circumstances for their due rights and share in power.

    Recommendation:

I would recommend Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party. To my knowledge it satisfies the above cited pre requisites. It would be appreciable if ANP revisits their policies to make them more focussed on winning the rights of Pakhtuns and giving them a clear vision as the future of south asia might not have good news for its inhabitants

''They built FM station for one person to indoctrinate swati Pakhtuns ''

IF THIS IS ALL THAT TAKES TO BRAINWASH PAKTHUNS THEN WE DESERVE IT.....I MEAN ONE PERSON? SOMETHING TELLS ME THIS IS NOT CREDIBLE...ONE RADIO STATION CANT CHANGE A PERSON..THE PERSON MUST HAVE SOMETHING FUNDEMENTALLY WRONG WITH THEM...

AND TO THINK SWATI ARE ONE OF THE MOST EDUCATED PAKTHUNS TOOOOO....

      Ayub
In Pakhtun society , Mulla is a sacred personality like a Murshid in Punjab and Sindh. Otherwise a person ofcourse has no importance unless he is a political figure. Hence Pakistani state employed Fazlullah who played the former role and Afzal Khan who played the later. Hence the misery.

I put blame on swati people.
*first they welcomed talibans and allowed them to have full control of swat.
*Then they got weary of talibans and started whining, asked for help from pak army
*when pak army did operation and got rid of talibans, they celebrated.
        * Now they have complains from pak army.

Double-faced and coward people.....they should'nt have abondened tribal structure.

Salaute to people of dir, buner, lakki marwat and mulagoris who raised tribal lashkars and formed chagha parties to fight the talibans in their areas.

Luffy people in Swat set up lashkars as well, they were not fully supported and hence some of their leaders were killed. The partial blame does fall on people of Swat (but to be fair it falls on the other Pashtuns as well for their respective locations).

@Ayub historically the people in Swat (rather the ex-Swat state) have historically not unified or gone up in arms unless (at least for the most part) there was a religious figure involved...the case of Fazllulah is a little old dating back to the 90s and prior to that other "religious" figures came to the forefront inciting the people.

Luffy, define who your talking about here, are you talking about the general public? or the nazims that are interested in money gains? or the other politac leaders with there own objectives? to call people double-faced and coward people from a whole region is offensive. did you/are you seeing bloodshed first hand? or are you fighting physically yourself or feeling the hardship? i doubt it. so i dont think your in a place to call people cowards. anybody can generalize people i can say all white people are homosexual because they have open gay bars but is it right for me to make that statement?

"first they welcomed talibans and allowed them to have full control of swat"

            - Taliban pose themselves as religious people, of course our pukhtana welcome religious people, full control of swat? swatyaan people have always put alims and scholars at the top of the pyramid, to say something like what you just said you must know HOW it all happend, it wasnt just a click of the finger. they accepted and handed power over to so called sheikhs that said they were implimenting deen, so when you under the impression of people practicing shariah in the correct way and things start happening like people getting chopped up in the street and beheadings happen and allsorts of other bloodshed and out of order things, your going to rebel against the people you accepted.

"Then they got weary of talibans and started whining, asked for help from pak army"

            - wouldnt you get weary of alims and mulana's raising a jihad without your consent?, its natural to be weary when abnormal things happen. and as for the people they didnt exacly run to the army and scream help, incase you didnt notice Swat is in Pakistan, there is Pakistan army in Swat which acted on there own accord. if swat was a seperate state as it was in 1973 then it would be a different story.

"when pak army did operation and got rid of talibans, they celebrated. Now they have complains from pak army."

            - would you like to tell us what kind of complains they have from pak army? would it be innocent civillians dieing? or drones?

The only double faced and coward people are those that sit on their arses and do nothing themselves and dont have the balls to pick up a gun and fight the enemy but call other poeple cowards that are already in a war zone.

by the way if you studied geogrophy then you would know that Dir, Buner, Lakki Marwat etc are totally different to the demographics of Swat, Swat is huge theres upper/lower Swat, mountinous regions, the city etc ...there isnt ONE consencious or one decision or decision maker the situation is more complex than your naive simplistic view of comparing a whole district to little areas.

The basic responsibility of a state is giving security to its people. When it comes to the security of Pakhtuns, the sympathisers of Pakistan leave them alone and tell them to form "lashkar" [private army] knowing that this is in contradiction with the basic essence of any republic or state.

However when it comes to getting aid in the name of the same tribal Pakhtuns from west , Pakistan own them to deceive the west. What else is imperialism and slavery if this is not.

Even when the innocent tribal Pakhtuns form Lashkars , their leaders are killed by the secret agencies e.g in case of salarzais , as these agencies do not want them to fight Taliban who are the guinea pigs meant to be used against Afghanistan govt only.

I am afraid that if the same injustice prevailed, Pakhtuns might consciously realise their occupation by Punjab dominated institutions and they might become reactionary declaring "Qaami Jung" [national war] against army and those religious extremists who are desperate to kill their fellow Pakhtuns across Durand line for few bucks. That will be a big catastrophe in word and spirit.

Oh and for that Army will kill thousands of it's jawans and officers. Do you know its for the first time in history a war in which the soldiers to officer ratio is 6:1, that is for every six soldiers there has to be one officer? And you know how precious one soldier/officer is? And they are cutting their men themselves? Believe me there are many other ways

Don't tell me, you think without all this they could have not built an Army base in Swat? Pakistan Army did/can/will build any base anywhere they think its necessary. Btw according to your theory why they wanted to build a base in Swat?

Believe me like you said 'Talibans were funded by ISI and ISI staged this drama' Ok ISI gave 20 rupees to Talibans, than they spent 40 rupees to get them down and according to you they spent 60 rupees just to get 10 rupees from US. you are amazing man...!

Than it's our mistake, that we don't understand this. The mistake of that idiot neighbour of mine and yours who just go and kill himself by someone to get into Jannah !! It's our responsibility to teach the common Pakhtun what is right and what is wrong..

They are granted the due share in power but unfortunately we Pakhtuns always elect thugs and beghairata who won't fight for our rights!!

Even ANP was very much the same as Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party is today but after when they tasted power they sold the common Pakhtun. Let's hope that gran mashar Achakzai saib is not like Asfandyar Pakhtunkhwar. Thought it's very hard for Achakzai saib to gain that much popularity so quickly!!

You want to know why? Because the Army and govt do have limitations they can't be there outside your house for the whole life they have to leave one day. Right, and what's wrong in guarding your own house? The Terrorist/Talibans (I prefer calling them Militants) can easily mix-up with common Pakhtuns and they are there in the villages of Pakhtuns so that is why Pakhtuns are advised to be aware of the situation for their own safety !!

Ok, what about the attack on the shrine of Hazrat Data Gang Baksh?
How about the recent attacks in Karachi?
The Pakhtuns are affected more by the virus of militancy and hence you see them highlighted more? If Punjabistan (Pakistan) is doing this than why are they doing it in Punjab and KPK would be enough?

You mean against Afghanistan govt? Like against NATO? OK fine Pakistan is doing that .. See I am here to accept the facts all the times .. Shehbaz Khan

What you have written is already known to us via PTV and other military sponsored media of Pakistan all of which have "rationale" and "justification" for everything army does like yourself. This media campaign makes it a sin for anyone even to analyse anything contrary to the one which is projected in the media [most of which is false]. Our youngsters get so much emotionally attached to these things that any different opinion than the one projected by media seems to them as an effort of depriving them of their's or their relatives' jobs.

Musharraf had stronger arguments than all the politicians combined but still the politicians were right and he was wrong and he admitted to have jeopardized the political process in Pakistan. The same applies to all those of our youngsters who have emotional attachment and use their mental energies to defend the current system which neither was nor is in the interest of the poor even among Punjabis and Mahajirs.

My overall opinion about Pakistan is that neither Pashtuns nor Baloch freedom fighters would have much impact on the future of Pakistan but the internal and intrinsic contradiction in the very nomenclature of Pakistan [state meant to be theocratic but practically secular] will become a cause of its demise.

As for Pakhtuns, all of us know we have to work very hard to win respect in the league of nations. My opinion is that it is not via submission to other nations but by standing for our people, nation, language and motherland instead of fighting for the sanctity of some artificial identity imposed on us by history due to our political mistakes, that we will achieve our goal.

With due respect, Whatever you stated was just your opinion/ the way you 'thought' that happened. Like you said Army did it to make a base in Swat. And for what? And do Army really needed to do all this to make a base? Come on you and I know what Army is/how strong it is, it can construct a base where ever in the country it wishes to without any problem.

I am sorry but PTV also praised Musharraf I never did. PTV also praised Zardari I never did. And the media you are talking about like they even praise Nawaz (he is not doing anything) I never did. This very same media if it asks a question about the dramatic absence of Asfandyar from the ground than it's right and I gotta give them credit.

Don't consider me the one (as you considered others 'wrongly' that only one FM can drive them crazy) to be driven so easily by the media. Actually we all go and pick up the news 'we like', the news we think is right. Every one does have the opinion of things and must have one. In the very same way you are having a view about different things here which I appreciate that you have one but I don't agree because I think (which is right according to 'me') that your opinion lack many facts.

Da Swat pakhtun domra saada na day che da yao mulla pa khabaro ki rashi !! bal kay yao pakhtun hum domra saada na day. And the people of Swat are well-educated as far as I know them.

Allow me to elaborate my point of view in a different paradigm.

I agree that it is not any big issue for army to establish a base anywhere in Pakistan as Pakistan is the property of army and as a virtue of being the strongest institution of Pakistan it is an army with a state. However still on ground there have to be justifications even within the army in the same manner as you need to have feasibility study,PC-1 etc in govt dept. I also said that it was one of the reasons not the only reasons. In reality however it has geo-strategic importance in the big game as you will witness in future.

About media, you did not get my point. May I suggest you to read it again. If media does not project any leader or person ,it does not mean that s/he is absent or inactive or insignificant in Politics but it simply means that media is indifferent towards him/her for reasons related to the pre conditions for sponsorship by the mentors of those channels. It should also be known ,over and above that silence itself is a political move and strategy.

If anyone defends the decisions made during a military regime [for example Mushharaf regime in the recent past], it is an indirect corroboration and praise of military dictator.

I neither consider you nor the people of swat as naive as I was not discussing the post-operation scenario which made the people of swat cautious about the negative role of clergy in their destruction and devastation. I was reflecting uopn the pre-operation scenario in which religeous clergy was as important as it used to be in Pakhtuns society and they used to have power over people to motivate them to do things which no other institution can even think of. That means I consider swat as a case of religeous exploitation by the clergy and political benefit by the military elite of Pakistan.

I hope this small clarification explains my point of view as it is not just a case of juvenile ambitiousness to get comission in Pakistan army but an approach towards tackling issues related to the national interests of Pakhtuns.

Locals ordered to guard villages at night – The Express Tribune

SWAT: Security forces have pasted hand-written posters and pamphlets on to the walls in different areas of Kabal tehsil ordering at least one person from each house to perform the duty of guarding their local villages from 8 pm till Fajr prayers, and anybody who fails to act upon the order will be considered as a Talib and strict action will be taken against them.
It has also been said in the posters that local people will be held responsible if any mishap occurs during the night.
“Security forces will take serious and strict action against the concerned community guards in this regard,” it says.
Local people have also been directed that everyone must display their security pass when stepping out of their homes.
The new notice by security forces has left some locals in tension, especially those who are the only male members of their house. Those who work during the day to earn a livelihood for their family are in a difficult position as well.
