What Happened?
What happened in Swat was a drama staged by Pakistan military. The aims behind the drama were:
1) Army had to restore their image lost during the Musharraf regime.
2) They had to build army base in Swat.
3) They had to get more dollars from US by showing them their concocted achievement in swat.
How it happened?
They employed ISI stooges like Sufi Mohammad and Fazlullah to start indoctrinating the people with a terrorist version of Islam naming it Jihad.
They built FM station for one person to indoctrinate swati Pakhtuns with pro-establishment version of Islam. [It took the whole ANP govt to make one FM radio station].
When the stage got ripe they encashed it by killing hundreds of innocent Pakhtuns, target-killing dozens of nationalists, bought the loyalties of others like Afzal Khan, humiliating thousands of Pakhtun families and putting a halt to all development projects. The main culprits [Sufi Mohammad, Fazlullah] were never caught but given protection. One is in Pakhtunkhwa other in Afghanistan.
Diagnosis of the situation
The main reasons of why Swatis fell victim to the atrocities of army as well as Taliban were due to two reasons:
1) Failing to understand that Pakistan is not a state with an army but an army-with-a-state which is on the brink of collapse so it needs to make its grip stronger on Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan. If they do it directly then it seems occupation it adds to their problem hence they control these two provinces either via religious demagogues and sell outs like Sufi Mohammad and Fazlullah or via pro- establishment parties like ANP,JUI,PML [x,y,z,..].
2) Failing to understand that Religion will ALWAYS be used against them, either to divide them, polarize them, weaken them or de-politicise them.
Remedy
A strong intellectual, political and in the end agitational stand over the rights of Pakhtuns and Pakhtunkhwa [not just swat] hence strengthening the organic whole of Pakhtuns who could fight according to the circumstances for their due rights and share in power.
Recommendation:
I would recommend Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party. To my knowledge it satisfies the above cited pre requisites. It would be appreciable if ANP revisits their policies to make them more focussed on winning the rights of Pakhtuns and giving them a clear vision as the future of south asia might not have good news for its inhabitants
