NEW DELHI (PAN): India will continue to help Afghanistan rebuild despite the grave risk to its nationals because it has an interest in preventing extremists from using the country to attack India, the country’s foreign secretary hs said.
"We have a direct interest in Afghanistan, not because we see it as a theatre of rivalry with Pakistan but because of the growing fusion of terrorist groups that operate from Afghanistan and Pakistan and their activities in India," India's foreign secretary, Nirupama Rao, said at a South Asia Initiative talk on India's Global Role at Harvard University in the United States.
"Indeed, developments in Afghanistan over the past few years have demonstrated in ample measure that peace, security and prosperity in today’s world is indivisible, and that therefore, the international community in Afghanistan must stay the course," she said, according to a transcrip of her speech posted on the Harvard University website.
"Our development partnership, which has received wide appreciation of the Afghan people, has been guided primarily by the needs of the Afghan government and people. We stand by this commitment despite the grave threat under which our personnel and people are working in Afghanistan to transform the lives of ordinary Afghan people," she said.
Indian assistance to Afghanistan has amounted to over $ 1.3 billion since 2001 which has helped build vital civil infrastructure, develop human resources and capacity in the areas of education, health, agriculture, rural development, Rao said.
India citizens have been attacked and killed while working n Afghanistan, the most recent was in February of this year when the Taliban attacked a guesthouse used by Indian medical workers, killing nine Indians.
Earlier last month, in a joint statement with his Indian counterpart, foreign ministers of the two countries resolved to work with together to deny terrorists a safe haven.
