Technically someone will point to a difference between a nationalist and a patriot, but here I sense that many of us allow the terms to overlap.

There is nothing wrong with prioritising and helping your family to be healthier, more prosperous and to be better educated. Your "family" can be your children, your tribe, village or the people with whom you share commonality. If you call that nationalism, then apply that description to many of us. What's wrong with that?

On a Pashtoon forum, it would surprise me if people didn't have a vision of how we couldn't be better united for a better future.

Afghanistan is a Pashtun Majority nation. If a Punjabi is born in Afghanistan we will force our identity AFGHAN on him as well. Afghan is PASHTUN.


Sher Khan go ask for your revenue records or domicle Pakistan will label you as an Afghan. NWFP was once named as AFGHANIA. Saying you are not an Afghan means you are rejecting all your history.

You see Sher Khan, Khattak baba predicted this hundreds and years ago. Sher Khan I dont want to kill you because I admire and respect you. But if Khushal Baba was alive he would have killed you for saying you are not Afghan.

That association is no longer valid because the word Afghan is no more used for Pashtuns exclusively.

Pashtun is the native/indigenous name for Pashtuns that also connotes their values, culture, and language most precisely. It is unfortunate that some members here are making the historical precedence of the word Pashtun over the term Afghan controversial. There cannot be a bigger disservice to Pashtun nation than this.

I wonder how do some people here try to play with this word i.e., Afghan as a way of establishing political hegemony over the non-Pashtuns e.g., Tajiks, Uzbaks, etc. of Afghanistan and in the process get played and lose more (to the same ethnicities) in terms of culture and political space but don't realise.

One guy was arguing wid me about nationalism, he said i need nationalism so i can do good for my country.

I was like i am not a nationalist, but which ever corner of the world i will work in, i will be honest, i will help people and i will not do fraud. Tell me is that not a good service you are doing for that country?? I will raise my children to not be rude, to not be anti-social and so on. Again these things will not be good no matter which world you live in? So why do we nationalism to make our country better...

If you teach each individual how to be a proper human being, how to be productive and how to be good...no matter where he is in the world, he will be doing a positive thing, which means a positive thing for the country

All the evils that you have listed here are the most common in those regions where words like "Afghan", "Muslim Ummah", "Pakistan", etc. are used as umbrella terms to conceal ethnic diversity and political/cultural aspirations of the captive nations on the one hand and the hegemony of the dominent groups e.g., Punjabis in Pakistan, Arabs in the context of Muslim Ummah, etc. on the other.

Europe is an example for us. Accepting the ethnic/cultural diversity has ushered into era of harmony and peace between European nations. Central Asia is an another example.

I have observed that on the Pakistani side those Pashtuns that have entered into marrital relations with Punjabis etc. are very averse to the use of the word Pashtun in political sense. Same is true of Afghanistan where those having established marrital relations with non-Pashtuns or having acquired interests in non-Pashtun areas are against the word Pashtun and emphasize the use of the word Afghan.
