The attempted coup was well organized. This faction within the military were banking on the hope that the rest of the Turkish army would fall in line with them. Kerry made a statement about his talks with Russia and US cooperating in Syria as the attempted coup in Turkey was unfolding. His comments were weak lacking no disappointment at all. There was no outrage by Europe, and the NATO alliance head only condemned the coup when it was apparent it was failing.

I think the reason the coup did not succeed was because the majority of the Turkish military is no longer secular. Erdogan has promoted more religiously conservative officers.

The AKP government has built up the Turkish economy and has brought religion back into government.

Erdogan has a massive business empire, and this has to be due to the advantages of his position. Whatever the interests of the Coup plotters, part of the reason they didn't succeed was because even AKP's secular opponents and their support base strongly opposed this attempted coup because they know military dictatorship is the worst alternative (Assad in Syria, Sisi in Egypt).
