Wrong, urdu isn't useless for anyone. There are dozens of languages in Pakistan but if you know urdu then one can work anywhere in Pakistan. Similarly English is language of higher education in Pakistan.

Anyway urdu is damn easy to speak for any Pakistani, even afghanis pick it up quickly. Even isolated tribes like Kalash now speak urdu. We will never communicate with each other in english, sound weird.

You need to thank Bollywood for making Urdu easy for Afghans...the reason Punjabis love Urdu is cuz of similarity---sister language--both Indic languages. On other hand for Pashto speaker Urdu is very difficult to learn.

Honestly if I was pathan in afghanistan then I will rather die before adopting farsi as official language. English is neutral and have nothing to do with us, so that's better option.
