  • Pakistani Pashtuns

My question is what will be the future of Pakistani Pashtuns. If we look at the social, political, linguistic, economical structure in Pakistan, then one can conclude that the future of Pashto in Pakistan is dramatically in decline. The reason is the fact that Pakistan is a country that does not support minorities nor is it cultural flexible.
Pakistan's national language is Urdu and English. And the government does not have any program to support any local language in the provinces. This means that either the Pashtuns modernize and adapt Urdu as its first language, or stay illiterate and poor.
Even now one can see that most Pashtuns who have been through the educational system in Pakistan, have seen a great decline in their Pashto vocabulary. Either they completely adapted Urdu, or there is a heavy mixing of Pashto with Urdu and English.
Pashto isn't taught in schools in Pakistan, and no; having one lesson in third grade isn't considered Pashto education. So if the situation is already so dire, imagine how the situation will look like in a decade to two.

So what I really want to know is how Pashtuns in Pakistan feel about this. Do you guys ever think about it, or is the Pashto language just not important for you?

There is not much future for any ethnic language in Pakistan. Every year % of people living in cities is increasing and rural population declining, don't expect next generation of pashtuns in Karachi to speak pashto.

Nothing to do with supporting minorities or not, but one can't have dozen official languages and expect everyone else to speak it. So if someone want to work other then being menial/labour then education is necessary which will be in urdu and english.

It's the same answer as to what will happen to the Punjabi language in Pakistan. I mean Pashto is not going to be wiped out because it is not taught in school, it will still remain the mother tounge of ethnic Pashtuns. Many many countries around the world have a national language and also have the different ethnicities speaking and keeping their own. Even in the west i come accross second generation Pashtuns, Indians etc that still have the ability of speaking their mother tounge even tho they hardly have anyone to speak it with.

The funny thing is, it is not the urduspeakers of Karachi but Punjabis who are promoting the Urdu language through out Pakistan, heck Punjabis have killed their own language because of this inferiority complex

Pashto will disappear from your family in America within a decade or two. Its because you are not member of Pashtun society which exists in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Good point. What DSM also seems to forget that in Afghanistan the situation of Pashto language isn't much better.

HAHHAHA IF PANJABOS would do that, the part of Indian punjabi region will have more influence over the paki side. Simple facts English and Urdu = Parsi/Hindi colonialism language is two main official language of this artificial British made up state. Only this first sentence is enough to denounce how unnecessary a British state is required near Afghanistan and Hindustan.

It is indeed a concern but i doubt Pakistani pashtuns will just stop using pashto as primary language because in Pakistan has superiority complex over other ethnicities and very rarely i have seen pakistani pashtuns abandoning pashto for urdu.

Yes something need to be done for introducing pashto as a subject at least till 8th grade

why are you doubting it? pathan in pakistan are suffering severely from inferiority complex. they completely kneelled before urdu and bollywood culture. they perceive the cultural pashtun as backward. speaking urdu and dressing like desi is considered the sign of modernization.

r eater no one have killed any language, unlike bhaiye muhajis who have completely lost their original tongue and adopted urdu but one can still see they have not lost their bollywood gangster/tapoori accent. Even kalash in Pakistan speak their own language since thousands of years. If kalasha can survive with few thousands people then I'm sure pashto, punjabi etc will survive in Pakistan with millions of speakers.

But urdu/english will continue to be official language because Pakistan is federation with many ethnic groups in it, it need neutral language like urdu/english and not expect minorities to adopt majority group language.

Pashto is in similar situation in Afghanistan despite overall pashtuns making more % of population there.

Other day I was reading article on tribune written by someone with surname bangash and who's professor in Lahore university. Clearly a pashtun but I doubt he speak punjabi.

It is impossible to compare the situation of Pashto vs Urdu with Punjabi and Urdu for historical, racial and cultural reasons.

Punjabi is close to Urdu/Hindi and is basically a village idiot version of Hindustan language that retains more of its original Dravidian substratum so it does not matter if sh** stain Punjabis speak Urdu or Punjabi they are speaking moreorless the same crap.

Punjabis are not even a real people anyway they were only referred to as that by foreigners after the late 18th century but more officially by the British in the 19th century.

None of the great conquerors of India ever made any mention of a "Punjabi people" in their memoirs. Not Ghaznavi, not Temur, not Babur, not Nader Shah not Ahmad Shah Durrani. The word is not even used to refer to a people in the writings of so-called "Punjabis" themselves like Nanak and Gobind Singh.

Punjab is just originally a foreign name for an area of land that the Turkic colonial masters of India gave to that region. The people themselves are low caste Hindus that in their own Hindu language are known as things like Juts, Chamars, Chuhra and other such names denoting smelly, inferior people. These are the native, indigenous names for the communities that make up the so-called "Punjabis".

It was the British that labelled these people together and called them "Punjabis" after their conquest of north west India based on the grouping together of several Hindu dialects the British classified as "Punjabi" language.

This is entirely different scenario for Pashtuns who speak a unique language that has no relationship to Hindu languages like Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi.

Unlike Punjabis who were invented by the British in the 19th century from the grouping together of the Hindu low castes of north west India Pashtuns on the other hand are a people who have defined themselves, named themselves, developed their own culture, their own traditions, their own identity and their own territorial polity.

Key to much of this self developtment and identity has been Pashto language.

If Punjabis lose their village idiot Hindu dialect for the Persian wanabe Hindu language they call Urdu they are not losing much.

If Pashtuns lose Pashto then they lose the essence and foundation of who they are as a people.

This is difference between Pashtuns and inferior Dalit paki people called "Punjabis".
