Afghanistan has survived because the Pakistani people foolishly believed that the Afghans were their brothers and that they could build a valuable ally in Afghanistan who could act as a transit between Pakistan and Central Asia. What you said is only halve truth, or distortion of reality. Lets take the ''not recognizing Pakistan''. Look from Afghanistan's perspective, and for once from a Pashtuns perspective as well.

You just had a long bloody conflict with the British. Who imposed a line in the middle of the country. Now the British empire was gone and all its former colonies regained Independence. Yet, before completely leaving, the British makes two Indian countries in which the Afghan people and land included.
Lets assume you were the president of Afghanistan at that time. Wouldn't you want to unite the nation again. You need to take into the consideration that Pakistan wasn't an established country. It was completely newly formed and there were a huge movement amongst lar Pashtuns against the country. Remember, they didn't get a referendum at all for their independence.
Any sane person would have done exactly the same thing Afghanistan did back then. And I find it very weak when people use this as an argument.

Regarding the guy who proposed a ''federation'' between Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran. That a second argument that is extremely weak at it best. It would have been another cooperation only in name like many others. South Asian union, Muslim union, East Asian union, if any of them held a foot high importance, we wouldn't be having this discussion right now. It was a mere political move to form a front against India, by then a weak Pakistan. It was a move to assure no invasion was staged by either Iran or Afghanistan for territorial gain in times of turmoil. You may say the federation failed, but the mission was complete. Iran and Afghanistan either stayed neutral or supported Pakistan against India in times of war.

Now lets analyze your next argument. The ''invasion'' of bajaur. In a times of ethnic nationalism at rise, and worlds two world super powers at turmoil with each other. Don't you think the most logical think is to react when the other sides Pashtun population shouting for independence. If you want to argue your so called ''invasion'', don't Afghanistan, blame your own people. They themselves asked for it and every move Afghanistan at that time did was in request from lar Pashtuns. Pashtuns had at that time complete political dominance over Afghanistan, and if things didn't go wrong at that time, Pashtun would had a complete domination over south and central Asia. That being said, what you're referring to as an ''invasion'', isn't an invasion at all. At it worst, it would be termed as a border skirmish. Hardly something one would sacrifice a long time relation with it neighbor, especially when that issue was resolved by both Pakistan and Afghanistan at that time. The second thing is that after a regime shift, one cannot hold things done by previous regime. If that was the case, the entire world would be firing atomic bombs at Germany now. Now count how many regime shifts was done by Afghanistan since then.

And invasion would be what Iran did in Pakistani Baluchistan province, when Iraninan troops literally took control of Pakistani villages in Baluchistan. I hardly see any response from Pakistan, not even a mere political response.

What I am referring to is the fact that Afghanistan did not interfere or rather was supportive toward Pakistan when amidst Indian and Pakistani wars. If Afghanistan attacked amidst the war, there would have never been a Pakistan today. Yet, Pakistan seems to completely disregard that gesture Afghanistan did in a time Pakistan most needed. The fact is that Afghanistan never had an aggressive approach toward Pakistan, beside that one border skirmish that happened after coup in Afghanistan. Which I must add, that even that was resolved throughly and a good relation continued.

Regarding your last point on territorial dispute. It nothing but a territorial dispute. You may be surprised, but in the West there is several territorial dispute, yet their relation is better than ever. They never fire a gun or even throw a mere insult, it rather become a game amongst them. The fact is, if one want to prosper and have friendly relation with its neighbor, then appropriate stance is required.
