The old regimes thought by giving eastern Pashtuns a bigger role in the army and police they will be pleased and don´t ask for human rights, better education, equality or better living standards. It's a known fact that in Pakistan, Pashtuns are second class citizens and treated and viewed as chowkidar Jahils. Being called Akharuth, or bring incredibly surprised at your eduction is normal in places like Karachi or Lahore.

Pashtuns are already considered red Indians in Karachi. At one point, if you were speaking Pashto in a MQM district, they would cut off the ears of Pashtuns. To be fair though, Pashtuns would retaliate as well, especially on Sohrab Goth.

It is very funny. 'Pathans' who have been in India/Eastern Pakistan for generations and now speak Urdu/Punjabi are almost idolized in Lahore, whereas pashto speaking pashtuns are treated as you say above. Every time I hear a 'pathan' (I have many in my family) make a pashtun stupidity joke (we've all heard 'em) it annoys me.
