  • Pashtun Tribal Nationalism

    Dear members of Pashtun Forums,

After observing the posts of many of our members here I have noticed that our biggest problem is disunity and tribal nationalism. How can we ever advance and progress if we are still arguing that Afridi's are more stronger than Achakzais or Noorzais? I am not asking for you to drop your tribes, fine, pay your tributes but refrain from praising them. All that does is create jealously, hatred and most importantly disunity. If I start bragging about how strong my tribe is, Science tell us you will retaliate and begin to compete with me, that competition is what's killing us and permitting all these western countries to play with our blood. I have traveled to many countries and nearly every Pashtun I have met the first question they ask me is "what is your tribe?" I understand that tribal roots are very important but do you honestly think that's helping us unify? Shouldn't you take me as brother if I tell you I am a Pashtun or a Muslim? Is my tribe that important to many of you?

I never really understood this phenomena of Tribal nationalism since all it has done is create rivalry, we have been divided into nearly 500 tribes(Sub-tribes included) Am I asking for too much when I say we should all unify under a common banner? Before any of you begin to criticize or attempt to provide justification for our disunity keep in mind that I am not trying to condemn the state nomenclature of Pakistan which according to many is based on flaws, I am merely trying to say that rather than wasting time discussing nonsense how about we work on bringing ideas forward for our unification.

What are some ideas that many of you think can help us leap-forward to our unification? What do you think of tribal nationalism?

P.S: I strongly encourage each and every one of you to educate yourselves, education is vital to our success.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

i agree, i think that tribal nationalism is just used by people so they can boast their egos, its not necessarily bad but it tends to create disunity. And anyway if we are to claim something then we shouldn't hold onto the past and what others have achieved, lets achieve more.

I support a Qabilistan where tribal Pashtuns live. A unification with a Dominant Peshaweris will never be accepted by most tribals.

IF Fata joins ANP's Pakhtunkhwa, then that would be Punjabi policemen and Kwatanyun being allowed to settle down in Pashtun dominate areas of the tribal belt.

However, If all Pashtuns from Afghanistan wants to join FATA and Pakhtunkhwa as one state, I will support it but not long ago the tribals oppose this new name of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and refused to join it and preferred a Qabalisation instead as our cutoms and culture will be saved from Nazia Iqbals and Drunkard ANP.

      Kind Regards

As I said at present Tribal areas joining with the so called Pakhtunkha is not a good idea under Pakistan.

If Afghanistan and all the Pashtun areas joined together then that would be acceptible.

If FATA joined ANP's Pakhtunkhwa, Then tribal customs and ghairat will be damaged severly as tribal areas have been saved from the influx of Non Pashtuns as we have witnessed in Peshawer and Swat.

Secondly It would be great under a Qablisation, which has political freedoms, right to vote through jirgas etc but must be solely under the tribal region, all parties must serve the tribal areas only, all issues in regards to the tribal areas should be solely the responsibiliy of the tribal region.

I once congradulated a fellow tribal about the renaming of Pakhtunkhwa, He replied back to me and said " what do you think Iam a Peshaweri, We want our own state or province". Well its up to you if you want to believe it or not.

I already distorted with the influx of Arabs, Uzbeks, Punjabis Militants using tribal area as a power base.

          Kind Regards

Well there is a well established movement in the tribal area which is working to establish a Qabilisatan.

              Please read following:-

Qabailistan: Tribal body wants fata made provinceSunday, April 04, 2010
              Bureau report

PESHAWAR: Tehrik Ittehad-e-Qabail (TIQ) Saturday demanded of the government to create a new province to put them on the path to progress and development.

“We are not ready for merger into Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in any situation. NWFP is a poor and backward province and unification of tribal areas with the proposed Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa would further multiply miseries of the tribesmen,” said the TIQ Chief Mir Aslam Khan Afridi. He was addressing a jirga in Jamrud tehsil of Khyber Agency.

The TIQ chief said if a new province was created it would have its own secretariat, courts and governor and chief minister from among the tribesmen. He said the black law - Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) - would automatically become redundant and the tribesmen would emerge more responsible and answerable.

He said that tribal areas were replete with natural resources and if they were fully explored and exploited it would not only put a positive impact on the lifestyle of tribesmen but also help improve the economy of the country. Mir Aslam Afridi suggested that Malakand, Dir, Chitral, Swat and Buner districts should be included in the proposed ‘Qabailistan’ province. He said that tribesmen had the right to demand a separate province

              http://www.thenews.com.pk/daily_detail.asp?id=232519

The tribal region and culture is very different than the cities boys of the settled areas.

You wont find a single nazia iqbal dancing around for money in the tribal region. So we must preserve the tribal region and bring education, schools and hospitals for the tribesmen instead of them going to peshawer and getting their minds polluted with Pakistaniat and inter marrying with Non Pashtuns(peshaweris).

              Kind Regards

                  Admin khan.

very good topic, our biggest problem is us being more proud of our tribe than our ethnicity this was setup by the British to make sure we are never unified.
So you advocate discrimination against other ethnicities rather than discrimination between different Pashtun tribes?

the problem is that this forum is tolerant to Nationalism. And Nationalism by its nature is a sick ideology that spreads hatred among various peoples.

Nationalism entails praise of your own kind, and hatred for others.

As long as this forum retains its Nationalist image, it will always be a stage for hatred and discrimination.

Yes, Beetefaaqi is our biggest and most crucial flaw.
We go around telling people I'm this I'm that (even though I personally was never introduced to this concept of qaomparasti or even this concept of Pashtun vs non-Pashtun) but we don't realize that Pashtun yao Pashtun day. Musulmaan yao Muslumaan day.
Allah swt says that we have been put into tribes and races so we may KNOW one another, so we may distinguish between one another - not so that we can bash eachother. We have to truly wrap our brain around this in order to understand that you just simply aren't better than me just because you were supposedly born into one tribe and I was born into another.
I am God's creation and you're God's creation. At the end of it all, you won't be asked what tribe you were born into or how you made a name for your tribe. You will be asked what you did for the UMMAH of Mohammad sas.

Ethnocentrism tears us apart into a million pieces. We're busy discussing whether Ghilzian are better or Durranian while the enemy is taking our country apart.
Does it matter? Does it really matter? I'm Ghilzai, so what? Yes, our Qaoms are beautiful and we should take pride in their diversity but not in those ridiculous tribal rivalries and this idea of tribal superiority. This is what keeps the tribes themselves together and us as a whole apart.

                        Dear Mayana,

I have noticed that we both share similar sentiments. As far as this topic is concerned we simply can't yell for unity if we are still going to be stuck in such a mentality in which we value our tribe more than our ethnicity or better yet religion.

Unfortunately not everyone thinks like you. We have been strategically divided in our mindsets to assume that we must worship our tribes, we living in the west have no clue of some the tribal-feuds that exist in our hewad and I must confess to tell you would be really saddened to hear some of the stories which occur on a weekly basis.

Mayana, do you have any idea how much tribal nationalism hurts our unity? It really kills us if you think about it, We Pashtuns are making progress
albeit rather slowly but we need more to accomplish our strategic goals and interests. In order for us to work for our unity we need to accelerate and speedup our pace, the clock is ticking and time is running out. With that being said, In my honest opinion tribal-nationalism has to go. We have to implement a concept in our minds that clarify a basic point, we are one. Mozh tola yaw yu.

Ethnocentrism puts us in a stage of superiority-complex, although I have noticed that ever since the American forces have invaded Afghanistan the inception of unity has became more prevalent nevertheless we still have a lot of work to do.

I hope you are in good health, may Allah grant all your wishes.

Honestly.. maybe I can't really grasp the immensity of it because I am not from an ethnocentric background.. at all.
But what I do know is that there is a saying that says something along the lines of "You can't destroy Afghanistan from the outside, only from the inside." Think about it.. if only we were united.. would we not have incredible stability and strength as a nation? As a people? As a whole? As the Ummah of the prophet? Yet, here we are, sitting and saying that, "oooh plankay kho Mohammadzai day, Mohamadzian kho daghasi maghroor di. AU bistaanay kho Azikzay day, Azikziyaan kho daghasi di" Zma ye da torih ballah chi plankay au bistanay pa Qaom chishi dih, what we should go after is chi pa ZRRA chishi da, pa SHAKHSIYAATO chishi di.. Qaom au Khel pa Ballah waham.. in today's world it holds no importance anymore. No matter how much time you invest in your little Qaumbazi, at the end.. you've just wasted it all because your community as a WHOLE has gone nowhere because you were busy investing all your time and energy in your own little circle instead of thinking about the bigger picture..

And yes, we do have home horrible inferiority-complexes and superiority-complexes going on.. The way we were brought up as individuals results in us feeling inferior to others.. and the way we were brought up as qaoms or communities makes us believe that we're superior to others. Which is ridiculous, we were all created the same way.

Daa zma lewanay Zrra gorah, daa sta lewanee Mina..

Very good Admina I'm proud of you.

Tribal nationalism is one of the greatest barriers for unity and unification as a nation. Tribal identity means seperation and disintegration.
I would even go further and say because of tribalism we have no central authority, we can't progress without having military clashes 3 times a week.
Tribal culture is dangerous and extremely sensitive which is suicidal in a poor country like ours.

Tribal identity does not allow obligatory education nationwide because tribe is smaller than nation now guess which one is easier to control=)
Did you really believe that Angreez couldn’t colonize us by force?
Have you ever thought about the gap between our countries?
Don’t you ever underestimate the power of Angreez cause they were colonizing countries when we didnt know there was a bunch of different countries on different continents. While Angreez already been there done that and gained in experience, technological know-how, diplomatic game, political strategies, closed allies and had experts, analysts and brains on this n that, while afghans barely heard a name of a european country! They didnt even made it over his local mountain!

[How could a nation of 50, no say 40, or even 30 million to be children of some guy who had 4 -5 sons (and probably a dozen more children)? And where was this fool from anyways?
The area of todays AFG was populated 35 000 - 20 000 years BC, pashtunwalee is like 2 000 years old and Herodoth wrote 500 BC about some warrior tribe in 'pakhtas'.
Now forget Pashtunistan and watch the evidence - we call that place pashtunkhwa, pashtankha, pashtikha (paktika) or pashtia (paktya)..]

                              Now back to topic.
We weren’t even hostile to anybody cause we have melmastya, we do melmapalena, this is our culture while Angreez seen the whole world, fought hundreds of wars and colonized hundreds of nations and millions of tribes plus they knocked out almost every European rival being at the top of the world until some savage bad guys wearing tsapley massacred their officers.
When their political and military masterminds understood they can keep pashtuns down by creating dispute amongst them they didn’t try it military way, in fact they AVOIDED it. They was like ‘these psychos wont give up either, so why should WE fight when they can fight each other’.
Imagine how big the gap was between our countries. Don’t be naive my brothers and sister and I suggest you to think about it.
This is why Angreez always tolerated tribal independence, instead of abolishing tribal identity cause their biggest fear was when pashtuns come together and unify with other ethnic afghans. When Punjabistan was created, Angreez told them ‘listen guys, you better do not change our policy towards those savage pashtuns, just do what we did and keep your army away’. So they did that what Angreez did, and 50 years later we have a poor militant greedy tribal society.

But now to the nice part=)
If any there any interests Ill explain the positive aspect of tribalism and pashtunwalee first.
