8 in 10 Americans view Afghanistan unfavorably | Pajhwok Afghan News

    By Lalit J Kha Mar 8, 2013 - 09:23
WASHINGTON (PAN): Eight in 10 Americans have an unfavorable view of Afghanistan, making among the worst rated country out of 22 asked about, a latest opinion poll said on Thursday.
Afghanistan, is slightly above neighbouring Pakistan which is ranked third from bottom in the list if favorable countries, wherein Afghanistan is listed on the sixth lowest spot.
However, with nearly nine in 10 Americans have an unfavorable view of Iran, it is the worst rated country. Seven other countries -- Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Palestinian Authority, Syria, Pakistan (81 percent), and North Korea -- also receive unfavorable ratings of 70 percent or more.
Eighty percent or more of Americans have favorable images of Canada, Great Britain, Germany, and Japan.
According to Gallup, Americans react most positively to two English-speaking countries (Canada and Great Britain) that are longtime US allies and to two countries -- Germany and Japan -- that were the major U.S. foes in World War II about 70 years ago. All four of these countries are now democracies with economic systems that in many ways reflect the same dynamics as the US system.
Three additional countries, France, India, and Israel, are "above water" -- although they are not at the top of the list, they engender attitudes from Americans that are much more favorable than unfavorable, it said.
Gallup said the US actively invaded two of the countries in this bottom tier -- Iraq and Afghanistan -- in efforts to overthrow their governments or controlling factions. Syria is in the middle of major domestic turmoil at this time.
The US-Pakistani relationship is beset with rockiness despite the strained cooperation between the two on military matters. And continuing Gallup research has shown that Americans strongly favor Israel's side of the enduring conflict between that country and the Palestinian Authority, helping explain why the latter is in this bottom group, it said.

There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

i was talking to a danish woman the other day and she was saying that when she was in america, none that she mentioned denmark to, knew where denmark is.
so, they are generally, less likely to know where all these hated countries are or anything about them bar the propaganda in mass media.

For those of you who live here in 'Great Satan', how do Americans react when they find out you're from Afghanistan?

America is filled with hypocrites no surprise. All that brainwashing has got them paronoid and whenever a Muslim in cultural clothing walks by they scream "terrorist!" It's time for them to turn of fox and get in touch with reality.

How many people were surveyed? What part of the USA were those people located in?
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

This paranoia has existed long before Fox News. KP don't lose sight of the fact that all mainstream media is the same. Do you have this problem in the part of Canada you live in (I'm guessing Toronto)?

in australia, we get a lot of very good, well balanced documentaries about afghanistan, iraq and other muslim lands, but i get responses from people between, 'wtf are we doing over there?' - 'bomb the lot of 'em!!'

SiiNi you are right, hypocrisy also exists here in Toronto. Considering how southern Ontario is close to the U.S. border, lots of Canadians here are American wannabes and believe the negative stereotypes about Americans.

Dont take it to heart Randolph

Like Faye said, propaganda does wonders. In the 80s the Afghans were their, and I quote "rugged heroes with byronic good looks." They were viewed as something akin to Stephen King's Roland the Gunslinger back then. Now, due to the ruckus they are depicted as something else.

This is the way of the world. In Rome, the Carthaginians and Hannibal himself was so very hated despite the aggression Rome showed Carthage spawning Hannibal's repeated assaults. The Romans used to tell stories of Carthiginians hiding under beds to their naughty children.

When Simon Bar Kochba revolted, his Jewish contemporaries thought him the messiah and the Romans loathed him. When the going got tough and he began to lose - suddenly Jewish writers joined their Roman critics to attack him.

If you think about it, there can never be a time when all will love you.

                      Example:
Cheney wanted Mandela kept in jail as a criminal

                      The most powerful example:
Let us assume that the West and the rest of the world chooses to view our beloved Prophet as the warrior Prophet, in a way, akin to Moses... even then, the Prophet accepted as sinless and generally having not had the chance to lift the sword, The Christ (God's blessings be with him), was hated by his adversaries the Sanhedrin and is hated to this day by atheists and certain other groups.

So each time I begin to worry about whether people need to like me or not, I think of the fact that if someone as honored and generally viewed as peacefull as the Prophet Messiah, Jesus has enemies to this day - I reorient myself and realize that its useless to worry about how many people love or loath you.

we went from noble savages to simply savages in the eyes of the uninitiated within a few decades. to be disliked to the extent that our nation is by the likes of these people should almost be a badge of honor. i would be far more disturbed knowing that the moral polar opposites of us had a favorable view of our watan.
