  • Durand Line is international border, says US diplomat

    http://dawn.com/2012/11/02/durand-li...s-us-diplomat/

From the Newspaper | Ismail Khan

PESHAWAR, Nov 1: A senior American diplomat in Pakistan said on Thursday the United States recognised the Durand Line as an international border and if Afghanistan had any other interpretation, “that’s certainly their business”.

“The existing border is recognised as an international border. Now if the government in Kabul has other interpretation, that’s certainly their business,” Richard E. Hoagland, US Deputy Chief of Mission in Pakistan, said at a media roundtable here.

Mr Hoagland was responding to a question on Kabul’s rather angry reaction to US Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Marc Grossman’s, comments on the border which Afghanistan has long considered a contentious and un-resolved issue.

Durand Line draws its name from Mortimer Durand, the Foreign Secretary of British India, who demarcated the 2640-kilometre-long and porous borders between Pakistan and Afghanistan following a treaty with Afghanistan’s Amir Abdur Rehman Khan in 1893.

The joint survey team took two years to complete and covered some 800 miles of the borders.

Pakistan as a dominion to the British India inherited the treaty which Afghans believed was imposed on them through coercion.

The Afghans say the treaty — a single page containing seven clauses, was written in English which late Amir Abdur Rehman Khan could neither read nor understand. Pakistan says the border between the two countries is a settled issue and not opens to discussions.

“Look, this is not the Line of Control. This has been recognised as an international border for a long time. I understand that certainly Kabul may have a different point of view and they are certainly well within their right to explain their point of view,” Mr Hoagland maintained.

what a US diplomat says has no meaning anymore. One time it did. With a completely broken economy, global irrelevance is inescapable especially when such a fool is making a statement of a very sensitive subject.

I predict China will now take up issue of erasing Durrand line since China will have many interests in Afghanistan, and thus, it is especially important for Pashtuns to recognize the convergence of China's interests with that of Pashtuns in this matter.

I predict that the issue of Durrand will become very important as NATO is defeated and out, and Pakistan has used this border to support a NATO war in Afghanistan.

It has thus violated the autonomy of the tribal areas, and puts many things into question about the future and Pashtun interests.

Durrand line is a Pashtun issue and it must be erased for the security and prosperity of Afghanistan.

lol @ china giving a **** about the afg/pak border.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Horribe regime. The only thing one might say of them is that long ago they had multiple powers occupying their land and through blood, sweat, and tears they ejected the foreigners. However, they have an abysmal human rights record, their oppression Uighars and Tebetians is sickening (though the Dalai Lama admitted many links and purposeful disturbances from his CIA handlers).

Look at how they treat their own people in the FOXCONN factory... like fleas without any rights.

Precisely my point. If the world had to choose between the USA or China, I'm pretty sure the majority would go for the US. China is just China. Need I say more?

The only current difference, is that Chinese intervene beyond their borders in the way that the founders and framers here preferred, via business interests and not with bullets.

This means that China does not really distinguish between monarchy, democracy, shamocracy etc... it strikes a deal the other nation state (eg. African countries).

For this particular reason, one does not see China playing a major role, except in security council votes (e.g Syria) in regime changes abroad that dont suit its world view. If one regime falls, china just starts striking deals with the next one.

However, within their borders they have shown a desire to send mandarin chinese to various provinces (e.g. Mongolia) and breed out and push out the locals and subvert their identity/autonomy. One might say that the Americans did much of the same with their natives.

I think an autonomous Muslim majority country has ethnical dilemmas from both ends, dealing with both the dragon and the eagle; the former oppressed native Muslims and the latter gets involved all over the world.

I would hope that we could chose neither.

Its really horrible, aside from even speaking as a Muslim, but as a son of former citizens of a third world nation, how the nation state model makes the weaker economies of poorer countries are so interdependent on the European and American economies to the point of crushing sanctions being implemented at a moments notice.

why should they choose USA or in your case US?
if we talk abotu Afghans than we are culturally much closer to china and also china isnt responsible for massmurder of pashtuns.

than again we dont need to choose any of them as we are a free people not some slaves looking for owners.

Why is Muslim (monotheistic) Afghanistan closer to communist China (70% atheist, 30% various forms of non-monotheistic religions) than to the US which is a overwhelmingly Christian country?

Can you elaborate on that please?

like i said if one is to compare, i dont beleive like you lot in submiting to a "superpower".

                        both are in asia
                        afghanistan has border with china
china has more muslims than amreeka
AFG and china have had a trade history.

Above all china hasnt invaded Afghanistan and pissed in mouths of dead pashtuns.

my opposition to china is based on their oppression of muslims in china, and for supporting assad.

The Durand Line issue must be dealt with in order to bring stability to Afghanistan, and for the US to ignore it – is a poor move on their part. I can only assume that the US is not dealing with the issue, because there isn’t anything to gain from it for them. After all, why should the US have Afghanistan’s best in mind? And it is laughable to say that ‘that’s certainly their business,’ when Afghanistan’s government right now is a puppet state of the US, and hence – whatever opinion the government of Afghanistan shares is indirectly the US’s opinion as well.

I admire your patriotism. And your realization that Islam will have to play a role. But one thing you haven't figured out is that the KP Pashtuns are going to have to do the "sacrifice". International law, recognition, economic interests, geopolitics etc (all favoring Pak) will then mean jack squat if the Pak Pashtuns ever really bothered with Durand Line, Loy Afghanistan, or Pashtunistan. Afghanistanis, being the Muslim brothers they are, are well within their right to play up "issues" for their domestic compulsions. Just don't expect anything out of it.
