people in the fields that earned more money than a lowly farmer would of ran away from the country. since we have no surveys to prove it one way or another, i am relying on common sense. i might be wrong but i don't think so. its kind of the reason why most refugees around the world are mostly from kabul or other large cities than some village no one has ever heard of.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

true. some were left behind, grew their beards and joined the taliban. they don't learn how fly planes in madrassas. the skilled commies joined rabbani or omar based on time, circumstaces, and ethnicity.

i was in herat and kandahar in 1977 and it was nothing like those pictures from kabul. the women were in burkhas and as you say, men looked just as the pictures one sees today.

In the 60s en 70 this began in Kabul. The rest of Afghanistan was like it is today. After the suar revolution goverment tried to change the other citys too. If there was no war Afghanistan would be like the other middel-eastern countrys were the secular rule lastet for a longer time. Not super good but at least better than what we have today...
And if the laws and change that Amanullah had in mind in the 20s were established, I bet the communist would never emerge in Afghanistan.

I agree it was confined to urban centers, but women were increasingly attending schools and Universities, there was a Parliament that gradually included women who were no longer confined to burqas. Small industries were developing and our women were participating in them. Sure these were government initiatives, but people either supported them or tolerated them. Problems only arise when governments run roughshod over the people and seek to impose rather than to merely facilitate. I am not against any Afghan government promoting opportunities to people and leaving it with them to take or leave, so long as their views are to be respected. As my dear mother frequently laments, "just as Afghans were beginning to open their eyes to the world, calamity struck." It’s indeed a shame, but as painful as it’s been, Afghans have had a steep learning curve. God made us to feel pain, for it is the greatest teacher.
