  • What do Pakistani Pashtuns mean when they say Lar aw bar yaw Pakhtun

This post is to answer this comment by shadowgovernor on the thread Feelings of the proud Pakistani Pashtun by Arooj Khan where she wrote a beautiful poem on Pakistani Pashtuns. I did type a response before but I assume it was in the wrong section so it was deleted:

so i dont know if you can put all Pukhtane of pukhtunkhwa in the "pakistani pashtun" basket.

i dont really care what you call yourself and i think it is only one's own choice to know his identity or not ,to know his/her history or not,and i dont hate pakistanis i just dislike the way the gov.army is treating the people, especially in pukhtunkhwa.

for example : Musharaf bangash sings about loy Afghanistan constantly ,so does haroon bacha and many more, does that make them traitors in your eyes?
This opinion is very common among the Afghans. However the thing is for Pakistani Pashtuns and Afghan Pashtuns lar aw bar yaw Pashtun holds a totally different meaning.

For the Afghans this means that the lands of the lar Pashtuns belong to Afghanistan and are its property (even though their king Rehman Khan threw them to the British) and Pakistan should be broken up to bits to take those lands. However for the Pakistani Pashtun it means unity in terms of promotion of culture and language and love for each other due to shared history.

Even I say lar aw bar yaw Pashtun. It means I want unity in terms of promoting Pashtun culture and language because we share the same history and doing so together can strengthen Pashtuns. Do I mean I want Pakistan to be destroyed or I want Afghans to grab our lands?

Shadow mentioned Musharaf Bangash and his supposed "disloyalty" to Pakistan by claiming lar aw bar. Lets analyze a video of him.

MUSHARRAF BANGASH'S PASHTO NEW SONG (OFFICIAL VIDEO with ENGLISH Subtitles) - YouTube

Now if you notice he constantly displays patriotic behavior in the video.

At 1:38 in this video the Pakistani flag stands high as proclamation of the Pashtuns everlasting loyalty to Pakistan. If he doesn't believe in Pakistan by saying lar aw bar why have the Pakistani flag in one of his videos?

Then at 2:42 he says Jagli shamli di pa watan sarwar kowi (meaning Pashtuns have honour and die for their motherland)... now Afghans would mistake this as united Pashtunistan... however in reality he shows Pakistani Pashtun lashkars. We all know how the lashkars fought the Indians in 48, 65 and even 99 wars. Even now they stand against the Taliban. So what is he pointing at here- Pashtuns sacrifice for Pakistan (which only an idiot can deny) or something else.

Finally at 5:50 the Pakistani flag appears again on the top of a Pakistani truck drivers truck. Then prays for Pashtun unity. So the question is shouldn't Pashtun unity mean we respect each others countries and aspirations too?

For further proof do check the song Pyare Pakistan by Zeek Afridi a National song by a Pakistani Pashtun.

Also do check a song called Da Pakhtunistan de da Pakhtunistan by Musharraf Bangash. It may seem to the Afghan he is talking about Afghans grabbing Pakistani Pashtuns lands but for once do check out what he says 5:06. Our cries of lar aw bar yaw Pashtun or our idea of Pashtunistan only extends till Pashtun unity, it does not stem from hatred for Pakistan or the wish for it to disappear.

I am working on an article which will prove what most Pashtuns think of this. One person already told he views Pashtunistan as a concept that Pashtuns on either side are one and united. It just sounds cool and people say it but it never means they want division of the country.

It doesn't mean physically dividing from Pakistan.

Replace the "What do Pakistani Pashtuns" with "What does I, HavizSultan mean".

With due respect, no matter how hard one attempts, no one can come in between the inseparable bonds of Afghans(Pashtuns). Ground realities, History, Culture(There is no such thing as a "Pakistani" in Pashtun history/culture, along with their domicles(where the ethnic group is listed as Afghan, by the Pakistani government revenue records) disagree with every single word you wrote. ANP alone claims Lar aw Bar means we are all one Afghan(evidence upon request), and their opposition to a fence was a big blow to Islamabad, who was hoping to break that bond. That's enough to debunk the entire thread. Of course a few military brainwashed Pakistanis might defy the odds; but if you interview or interact with ordinary Pashtuns, the truth couldn't be any further than what you have extrapolated thus far.

My breakfast is waiting for me, best.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Khushal Baba of Pashtunkhwa predicted such creatures will arise that will attempt to break the bondage, his unparalleled response is just amazing. Cognitive science proves that if you brainwash a kid, he will follow what he has been taught, which can range from things like loving Israel or loving a failed state like Pakistan. So I won't disagree that a few brainwashed children, that happen to be Pashtun exist on both sides of the line. But to claim the meaning of Lar aw bar changed is just ludacris, and a psychological attempt to feel better about the situation, especially given how lovey-dovey the Punjabi dominated Rawalpindi/Islamabad has been to us Pashtun(Think Drone attacks on innocent Pukhtuns, at the expense of a few F16s and Benjamins).

      Once you kidnap Musharaf Bangash, I wouldn't be surprised if he puts up a few flags of the Banana republic for his safety. Wink, wink. Tsk, tsk. Your entire post, once again, holds no water given what happened to poor Musharaf sahab, at the expense of making patriotic songs like;

Musharaf Bangash !! Da Zamong Watan Afghanistan De - YouTube

      Enjoy the song.

And please Pakistanis, try not to kidnap him again. Millions of his kinds, including Rahim Shah exist. This decoration that you at times see from other Pashtun artists is pressure, and due to duress since they don't want what happened to Bangash sahab to repeat.

Adam Yusufzai from the gorgeous Swat,

You don't talk much, but your one-liners sure do hurt.

You officially became an Afghan in his eyes now,(not that it's surprising, given that almost ALL Yusufzais immigrated from Kandahar, along with other tribes that hail from other provinces of modern day Afghanistan upon some minor research conducted, something brainwashed military driven humans fail to realize, or recognize). You know what's hilarious? Even that language known as Pashto is called 'Afghani' by some Europeans.

Okay fine believe what you want. The only time you will realize what Lar Pashtuns actually want will be when you send your forces here to "unite us" and are sent running back across the border the same way the Afghans who attacked Dir were today.

We love Khushal Khan Khattak but people don't understand this in its proper context. Its like the jews picking out phrases from the Quran and saying haha look your Quran is evil and u r bloodthirsty... same way you pulled out something that does not even apply now.

If you look at the poem you will notice Khushal praising Pashtun raiders. Only a person out of his mind in the current age and time would like to build a reputation of Pashtuns as raiders and looters instead of peaceful citizens with thousands of years of culture especially when the west and farsiwan do so much propaganda against them. Please at least look at the time and age!

The poem just holds sentimental value and came at a time the Mughals imposed vast taxes on the Pashtun areas they controlled. In 1650 (during Khushal Khans time) Mughals controlled Pakhtunkhwa. They treated the areas as a colony and Pashtuns grew frustrated with their rule. As a result Khushal Khan Baba said those words.

They don't apply in their literal sense now. And the qoute clearly means ONLY Pashtuns are supposed to be Afghans. Afghanistan has Tajiks Hazara and Uzbek today who they also call Afghan.

If Khushal Khan Baba actually knew how the bar Pashtuns had thrown away by the lar Pashtuns just to protect their lands from invasion from the British he would have taken his sword out and slain Abdur Rehman Khan.

And in the 21st century their needs to be serious division between the words Afghan and Pashtun. If all Afghans were Pashtons then there wouldn't be any Tajiks, Hazara or Uzbek in Afghanistan. And don't tell me you are a traitor by saying they are not one. Initially when I came to the site I was also saying they were one but how can they be one when it has been drilled into the Afghans mind that a Pashtun cannot be a Pakistani at all.

Afghans are fueling this division by not respecting us, our country and our choice to be Pakistani.

Personally, I only care for Southern Pashtunkhwa, e.g. Quetta, Zhob, Kandahar, Lakki and Waziristan along with Loya Paktia, which includes Paktia, Paktika, Kurram, (parts of) Ghazni, Khost, (parts of) Logar and (parts of) Zabul.

But still, lar aw bar yaw Afghan.

Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
