No, he understand the comparison made. He was in disbelief about how a group of men would be able to execute a mission without putting thought into who else might be in the environment (i.e innocent people). He grasped the concept that if a nation of people with info access at their fingertips can be manipulated into belief Iraqs were hiding nukes under the Saddam statue, its not too far fetched to be a rabble rouser in Afghanistan (hence the who). You can call that comparison logico-fallacious-maximus or whatever the heck you want to call it, but I stand by it 100%.

With respect to popular support and being of the people, that was a seperate argument and nowhere in this discussion have I stated that they either had the people's complicity except that someone decided to visit that hotel and then tell someone else who told someone else who told someone else that it was a "fine" target. Whether that person was a Pakistani agent, Darth Vader, or an Afghan is something that investigators will need to figure out. They should look at their guest lists if possible.

You seem to have glossed over what I was saying in the first place which had nothing to do with Kabulis being complicit or supportive. You seemed to have extricated that out of the thin air within this thread, based solely on what I stated here. Rather, let me repeat, I am pointing out that you dont have the proof, nor do I to speak for the denizens of Kabul to determine whether they are A) outraged and want to name this martyrs day B) could care less thinking that two groups of people they dont like smacked eachother about or C) are oblivious and going about their lives.

My whole commentary was in response to Shamlawar's comment about whether this is a PR disaster for them or not. If you can show me where in this thread I claimed Kabulis were cheering them on, then please show me the quote? A guy who works at the hotel who tells someone else that he doesnt like what he sees is not "aiding and abetting."

With regards to the Taliban being of the people or not, you can create another thread or return to the old one to rediscuss that. Once again, my discussion here was simply whether this was truly a PR disaster within Afghanistan for the group. If outside of Afghanistan, the NY Times is calling is brazen etc, I dont think the war numbed Afghan people who are pretty smart would not see things as they were and are on a practical level and not through your ideological lenses.

You dont need popular support to say that a whole bunch of people simultaneously may not like one group of people. For instance, it appears much of the world is mad at Americans for one thing or another. South Americans may not provide the Taliban with mass support, but if the Taliban rout NATO from Afghanistan or cause them to leave through attrition, I am sure Hugo Chavez wont cry any tears. The Kabuli might feel one and the same.

As I noted before, you have some strange agenda when it comes to the Taliban. I dont know whether someone you know got off'd or whether a Talib beat up someone in your parent's village, but you superimpose wants and an emotional assessment over a logical one.

So I stand strong behind my original assessment that this attack has likely not made much of a PR deficit for the Afghan Taliban than already existed or the prior stable baseline. Doesnt mean that had popular support, no support or lukewarm support.
