While people are obviously angry at the Quran desecration, I think Afghans are voicing their opposition to the US war/Karzai.

Ethnic divide appears to not be there

It appears the protests have spread to Jalalabad.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan officials say at least three people have been killed after police opened fire to disperse thousands of anti-American demonstrators rioting for a second day over what the U.S. has said was the inadvertent burning of Muslim holy books at a NATO military*base.

Officials says the deaths occurred Wednesday in the Afghan capital and in the eastern provinces of Logar and*Parwan.

The Health Ministry confirmed the death in Kabul, while the Logar provincial police chief and hospital director of Parwan's main hospital confirmed the others. In total, the three men and other officials said more than 30 people had been wounded in various*protests.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is*below.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan police opened fire Wednesday to disperse thousands of anti-American protesters rioting for a second day over an incident that the U.S. said was inadvertent burning of Muslim holy books at a military base in*Kabul.

At least 17 people were wounded in the rallies in the Afghan capital and in another city, officials*said.

In Kabul, police shot into the air over a crowd gathered outside a housing complex for foreigners and a U.S. base on the city's outskirts. Nearby, angry demonstrators set a fuel truck ablaze on a main highway linking the Afghan capital with the eastern city of*Jalalabad.

"Death to America," chanted the angry protesters as they hurled rocks and set fires outside the complex, which is home to foreign contractors, police and some coalition military*forces.

The Health Ministry said at least 11 people were wounded by gunfire in Kabul, and provincial officials said at least six were wounded in riots that broke out in the eastern city of*Jalalabad.

The U.S. had apologized Tuesday for the burning of books, including Qurans, that had been pulled from the shelves of a detention center library adjoining Bagram air base because they contained extremist messages or*inscriptions.

The White House later echoed military officials and said the burning of Qurans and other Islamic reading material that had been tossed in a pile of garbage was an*accident.

As the rally Wednesday in Kabul turned violent, the city's police chief Mohammad Ayub Salangi arrived at the scene with hundreds of reinforcements. Police later said the demonstrations had been broken up and that the situation in Kabul was now under*control.

"They have the right to demonstrate, but they have to do it in accordance with the law," said Salangi's deputy, police chief Daud Amin, who was also outside the housing*complex.

"It is their right to demonstrate. We are also Muslim and we say it was a wrong action from the Islamic point of view," he added about the Quran*incident.

A doctor at Kabul's Wazir Akbar Khan hospital said at least 10 protesters had been brought to the hospital with gunshot wounds. The doctor, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said one of the wounded was in critical*condition.

Several miles (kilometers) away, hundreds were also gathered outside Camp Phoenix, a U.S. military base, and were hurling rocks at the installation, said Kabul provincial police spokesman Ashmatullah Stanekzai. Shots were also fired in the air at Camp*Phoenix.

Stanekzai said another smaller and peaceful demonstration with just over 100 people took place in western Kabul near the capital's*university.

Police in eastern Jalalabad city said that thousands demonstrated in a number of separate protests over the Quran burning incident, with about 1,000 gathering outside an American base at the city's airport. Provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdul Zai said six protesters were wounded around the city of Jalalabad and that a number of buildings had been*burned.

After the Quran burning incident was made public Tuesday, more than 2,000 Afghans protested outside the Bagram Air Base near the capital. The incident took place late Monday, when Afghan workers saw soldiers dumping the books in a pit where garbage is burned and noticed the Qurans and other religious books among the*trash.

These people first want the US to go. They are opposed to the US war. They are angry over the desecration of the book, but are also using it to express their opposition against the US/Karzai.

Its up to the people whether they want the Taliban or not, not up to outsiders, and their interests are not represented by the likes of Abdullah Abdullah, Karzai, Spanta, Saleh, etc.

These people lack credibility, and are shown no regard

The reaction to the Quran desecration is one Afghans across the ethnic spectrum are unified on. The Afghan war specifically has effected Pashtuns, but the illegal Karzai regime has effected the whole nation

It is actually common social science that people converge on a rallying issue (Quran burning) in order to push forward their interests.

This is what happened in Tunisia, Cairo, etc.

It is complete nonsense to think these people are going to have a demonstration against their fellow Afghans. They may oppose them politically, but in general, their opposition to the US occupation/war/ Karzai overrides this for now.

Afghans can figure out their own situation

The quraan is not just another book to Muslims and it is and should be pretty obvious to everyone by now that setting it on fire is not acceptable or a light issue. When some idiot does it, it understandable in the sense that the idiot doesn't know any better than doing that. But you come and camp on our land, claiming to be fighting injustice and then playing with our people's lives and emotions by burning our holy book and have anexcuse as this to present, who the **** do you think you are? Using our emotions for some type of new joke you have been working on.
Don't think there won't be any concequences for speaking so ignorantly of something that shouldn't have happened in the first place. That should give you a good idea of how much we care. You asked for it.
Don't think you are fooling anyone with your retarded grammar and typing skills.
And ghundal take a ****ing break. One thread dedicated to one cause is enough.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

Too many people simply cannot get past their own agendas and this is what happens when occupying forces become arrogant. The fact is, you cannot take ignoramus off the American streets, stick them in Baghram and think that their actions will be without consequence. The Qu'ran is too important to be treated like this and the deaths in the protests prove this clearly. The Afghan reaction is perfectly understandable and yes this fuels the resentment and the insurgence.

Flipside - and this should be considered too - is that if the American apologies continue to be rejected as token, people will make mileage out of this for their own gains too.

subhannallah, so much izzat and gheerat still in Afghanistan despite the 10 yrs and billions of dollars spent in brainwashing.

I can only imagine how those injured or killed by the Zulimon and how easy their questioning on the day of the judgement will be, answering to Allah that they gave their blood to protect the sanctity of the word of Allah.

                    Wow.

I dont know what your saying here, the burning of the Qurans was approved by management, so you cant blame the "ignormus."
The Afghan reaction is natural, its confirmation that the foreigners have no respect for the people they are supposed to be "helping."

Who will make gains out of this, it is always the people that will decide who will gain and who will lose. convincing the people is the key, and if you want to convince them , then you must respect them, thats why it is called the "war for hearts and minds."

People are not stupid to call for another Jihad, except Taliban *******s who are not even seen here hiding themself under the women lol. First, you should ask who is guilty for the Qoran burning, Americans or those who defamed Qoran by throwing them like normal paper on the ground that the US mistakenly used as fire stuff? If any of you guys listen there were lesser than 2000 protestants and mostly from local mosques and mostly children but not calling for the death of US but the demand of judging those who are responsible for that and somehow they mentioned even Karzai. People are not stupid.

if you actualy read the news it says on the bbc website: US officials apologised on Tuesday after Korans were "inadvertently" put in an incinerator at Bagram airbase.

Officials at Bagram reportedly believed Taliban prisoners were using the books to pass messages to each other.

so i dont think the USA mistakenly used then as fire stuff, more like they new they were using it, and come the **** on man!!! hw ****ing stupied do you take these americans to be? are you trying to say they didnt no it was the quran even though its fully written in arabic etc and i am pretty sure these americans got some training on recognizing islamic books etc they new what it was but they still did it, get your tongue out of americas ass and go brush it smells like ****
