The deal was to allow them (the ISI) to do what they wanted in FATA, Pakhtunkhwa and in return the ANP could loot the government exchequer to their hearts content. Afrasiabs confidence comes from the fact that Imran Khan happens to be an ISI candidate and the americans seem to be wary of them, so he feels their might be a good chance the ANP might receive a few tax dollars that belong to the american public. Its really too soon to tell what might happen but ANP popularity is at an all time low but I don't really see the PTI breaking into more "traditional" and conservative Pashtun areas without ISI help.
pa Khair, I have heard some disguntled "former" nationalists and friends of Afrasiab are jumping on the bandwagon with Aftab Sherpao ---is that correct?

Khairoona; I haven't heard anything to that regard. Right now I don't see Sherpao gaining what he already has, infact I see him losing. He lost a key member in ex-MPA Alamzeb Umarzai who seemed to have been gunned down by his cousin Bashir of the ANP. Another key member of his party and provincial minister, Pervez Khattak plans on moving to the PTI. Outside of places like Nowshera and Charsadda I don't see Sherpao having any impact on anything.

Afrasiab is a pretty weak candidate; his political base in Karak (where he last contested) is weaker than Masood Sharifs. His role in the party is more of a "wing-man" to Asfandyar and the rest of his crew. Hope that helped.

Sorry wrora. His being elected as chief has nothing to do with his strength as a candidate. Iqbal Jhagra (who was also a Senator) was the PML-N secretary general (no. 3 to Nawaz Sharif) and he contested in 5 constituencies in 2008; some of which were super easy had he made an effort, but it all came down to his vote bank, which happened to be empty even with party workers. Like I said Afrasiab's role as wing-man is important but his strength as a candidate is weak because he's never really electioneered before. The last time he had done, he lost to Aslam Khattak in 1990. After that he was more involved in the Human Rights Commision pakistan than he was in politics.

Party elections also don't mean much. The Bilours practically ran/run the ANP with their blood, sweat and money, and are probably stronger than Asfandyar in terms of candidate strength and overall political power. The only reason the party happens to be headed by Asfandyar and not the Bilours is that he seems to have inherited all of his fathers and grandfathers links. Plus, the Bilours don't want to deal with the Americans and ISI as long as they get their cut (and boy, do they get their cut!). Remember the Bashir Bilour Chief Minister fiasco? They used the PPP protest and Qamar Abbassi thing to get him to step aside and bring forward Asfandyars nephew, Azam Hotis kid Haider. I seriously think Bashir would've won had it been put to a legislative vote, which would be the normal thing to do. But there were positives to it. Had he not stepped aside then Anwar Saifullah may have become the current governor of KPK, and he really does not like the ANP.

PTI is becoming the place to be these days, and I expect in the near future we'll be seeing many defections, especially once the assemblies are dissolved and an interim/caretaker government is put in place.

Unfortunately when he was asked can you write a leave letter in English he said no United Pashtuns in Karachi? LOL It's more like eating Pashtuns in Karachi, I paid a visit to their office near G-10 Stop, Gulistan-e-Johar Block 8 near Safora Goth and I couldn't find any thing, any single ideological thing except a bunch of guys smoking Charas and drinking wine !!
And I am sure this is the situation of their 99% offices in the city.
