  • Paktia elders back strategic pact with US

Elders from southeastern Paktia province on Thursday supported the Afghan-US strategic pact and an upcoming Loya Jirga on the deal, the Presidential Palace said. A consultative meeting between President Hamid Karzai and tribal elders and religious scholars from the province was held in the Presidency to discuss the agreement, the president's office said in a statement.
Karzai told the elders that the proposed agreement would be based on respect for the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The elders urged the President for construction of dams and other developmental projects in the province. Karzai responded the issues would be discussed at an upcoming Cabinet meeting.
More than 2,000 government officials and elders are scheduled to meet in mid-November in Kabul to discuss the pros and cons of the deal and a mechanism for peace negotiations with Afghan insurgents.
Participants, who will arrive in the capital four days ahead of the event, will be briefed on the objective behind the grand assembly. Beginning on Nov. 16, the deliberations will continue for four days.
All sitting parliamentarians, some former MPs, 30 percent members of each provincial council, representatives of civil society and special people, religious scholars and influential tribal elders will attend the jirga.
Safeguarding Afghanistan's national interests, an end to nighttime military operations, strict restrictions on international soldiers to avoid harming civilians and legalising their presence are some of the core conditions set by the government for signing the agreement.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

thats unfortunate for the elders and afghanistan.

just because they are old doesn't mean they are right.

its elders who have upheld the status quo of afghan weakness in the modern era. this goes for the pro american/pro talib elders. its time to shake things up.

Hundreds of Afghans rally against US pact
      (AFP)

      24 October 2011

KABUL — Hundreds of Afghans took to the streets in Kabul on Monday, shouting “death to America” in an angry protest urging the government not to sign a strategic partnership with the United States.
The demonstrators, many wearing turbans and carrying placards, took to the streets in the western part of the city, chanting anti-US slogans and carrying banners demanding that all 130,000 foreign troops leave Afghanistan.
“We are here to say no to the strategic partnership with the US and the establishment of foreign military bases in Afghanistan,” one protester, Waheedullah, told AFP.
“The strategic partnership has no sharia (Islamic law) or legal basis, we don’t want that.”
US Ambassador to Kabul, Ryan Crocker, has insisted that permanent military bases do not figure in plans for a future US-Afghanistan partnership, but fears remain among many Afghans over details of the fine print.
Holding pictures of Afghan civilian casualties allegedly caused by foreign troop operations, the demonstrators chanted: “Death to America”, “Death to NATO” and “Allowing military bases is treachery”.
US President Barack Obama has announced that he will pull 10,000 US troops from Afghanistan this year as part of a gradual withdrawal of combat forces scheduled to be completed in 2014.
A grand assembly has been planned next month to discuss the partnership agreement under negotiation with the United States, which will outline the two countries’ relationship after troops leave.

Loya Jirga lost its credibility back in 1980s when the participants were chosen based on political affiliation rather than public representation. It worsened at the time of Mujahideen/Topakyan and the current regime where true Khans/Nawabs/Sardars of any given tribe were subdued and substituted by a thug that had the support of a few crooks and AK47s. An example of just Kandahar may illustrate how hypocritical this traditional rite has been made: Gul Agha Sherzai who was not a tribal elder but the son of a poor restaurant owner who gained fame during the civil war will be representing Barakzais, Amir Lalai who was a route driver represented Popalzai tribe due to his political affiliation leaving the true 'Khans' of the tribe behind, and Noorzai tribe was and will be represented by a similar person(s) like Arif Khan; again for his loyalty to Karzai and relationship with his family and at last Alkozai, Alizai, Ishaqzai, Kakar and Assakzais are and will be represented by likewise thugs. In Zabul province, Tokhi, the largest tribe has been and will be represented by Hamidullah Khan. Hamidullah Khan till early 1980s was a day labor (Kharkar) who would load and unload commercial trucks. Yet again, for his loyalty to Karzai and HIG, he will be heard as the voice of Zabul. Consider most if not all the participants of likewise nature. A Loya Jirga comprising of the above mentioned elements is very much predictable and non-authentic. Participants, be it from Wolesi Jirga, Mashrano Jirga, and all provinces will lack people's mandate and only favor or oppose what suits their personal interests or their affiliates rather than "National Interests".
In this particular case of Pakitan delegation meeting with Karzai and assuring him of their support for any pact is just a political show. I am sure the delegates were either chosen by the governor of Paktia or the provincial conuncil of Paktia with an agenda. A common man or neutral true tribal elder will never find his way to Karzai's office.

any grand loya jirga is just show, now or 200 years ago. since we have so many damn problems in the country now, its obvious all these loya jirgas in the last 40 years have been pointless since no problems have been solved.

Millitpal sahab, you were missed. Welcome back.

I totally agree with you, these Loya Jirgas are nothing but clown shows where they are trying to legitimize something that can't be stopped regardless. It's the western way of showing that "You see, xyz action was supported by the Afghans, we aren't shoving down upon them!".

Loya Jirga's in the past, a good 100 years ago, were very effective. In fact, let's not downplay it completely. Local jirgas still play a crucial rule in Afghanistan. For instance, if member of the Alokozai has beef with a Popalzai, they will conduct a jirga where they work upon a truce. For the record, I absolutely despise tribal nationalism.

These governmental funded one's however are a complete joke Randolph.

true. i meant the loya loyaaaaa jirgas and the theatrics that come along with it. the traditional jirgas are very useful and should be conducted more often, actually.

Dont blame the Elders or Jirga ,blame the politicians and military complex.

you think elders want to risk nightraids on their homes?

even those so called polls held in Afghanistan are not legit because the people just wont dare to speak their minds. The people holding those polls would likely snitch them to the authorities for lets say having a different opinion about the occupying forces or karzai.

Also if you see Afghans being interviewd for news, they will say what the news wants even if the news is from a "neutral channel" they still wont risk it.

one thing is for sure dollar is the **** of khar dajjal.

Thank god we are seeing progression, Paktia, Khost, and those areas bordering Pakistan need to be protected by the Afghan government, and those tribes who inhabit those parts of Afghanistan need to have more pacts with the Government, I think this is a good start to limiting Pakistani ISI influence.

As a matter of fact, it would be more wise for Karzai, to start recruiting more and more from those parts of Afghanistan, develop a some what paramilitary like militia, similar to the Chechen units of the Zapad/Vostok, and start taking out all internal threats to the betterment of Afghanistan.

                          Those areas are vital, because

1)they are used by Militants from Pakistan to get into Afghanistan
2)they are the main logistic routes to supply remaining Militants

Once they are cut and pushed back into Pakistan and to the arms of their masters the ISI, the border would be more secured and the number of suicide bombings and killings of innocent people would decrease too.

This is very good news. Slowly and gradually, Pashtuns of Afghanistan are realizing that they would no longer be deceived by Islamist brotherhood slogans and they should do what is pragmatic and realistic...i.e., first self-focus and then focus on others.
