Deadly week continues in Afghanistan as 2 NATO troops killed - CNN.com
Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Roadside bombs killed two service members in separate attacks Friday in southern Afghanistan, NATO said, marking the eighth death in the region in the past three days.
On Thursday, five Americans were killed in an improvised explosive device attack. An additional service member died Thursday in a similar strike in eastern Afghanistan.
                          No other information was provided.
The rash of attacks comes on the heels of the worst single-incident loss of life for Americans since the Afghan war started nearly a decade ago.
Thirty U.S. service members, including 17 Navy SEALs, were killed Saturday when their helicopter was apparently shot down by insurgent fire in the eastern central province of Wardak.
Sgt. Daniel J. Paton, 26, of Canton, Ohio, was also killed that day in a roadside bomb in Helmand province.

The attacks coincide with a NATO drawdown and a transition of security to national forces. Ten thousand U.S. soldiers are scheduled to depart Afghanistan by year's end, with the full drawdown set for the end of 2014.
"The endgame for NATO is to hand over security responsibility over all of Afghanistan to the Afghan security forces," said Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobsen, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
"Once we have achieved that, the NATO mission can come to an end."
Critics question the readiness of Afghan security forces, particularly those operating in the country's restive eastern and southern border provinces.
Jacobsen said NATO forces aim to provide a more manageable scenario for local forces "against only very reduced numbers of terrorists."
But, he said, it "will have to be seen in the three and a half years that we've got left."
Newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker said last month that a U.S. military presence in the country could extend beyond the 2014 date.
Still, he emphasized that America "has no interest in permanent bases in Afghanistan."
"We will stay as long as we need to and not one day more."
Roughly 150,000 International Security Assistance Force members are deployed in Afghanistan, including fewer than 100,000 from the United States.
Meanwhile, NATO reported Friday that two insurgents were killed and several more detained after a joint coalition-Afghan operation in the northern Baghlan province.
The raid targeted a "Taliban facilitator" responsible for coordinating a network of suicide bombers who were preparing an "imminent attack" on provincial government officials.
The whereabouts of the facilitator are not clear.
NATO says coalition forces also detained an insurgent leader in Kandahar province, a Taliban heartland often considered their birthplace.

Afghan, NATO forces keep up pressure on Taliban insurgents
                              by Farid Behbud, Abdul Haleem
KABUL, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- In spite of losing 38 Afghan and NATO service members in an air crash Saturday, Afghan and NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) stationed in Afghanistan have been mounting pressure on Taliban and associate insurgents since the weekend.
In the latest operations against Taliban fighters, Afghan police captured a Taliban commander in country's Baghlan province 160 km north of capital city Kabul on Tuesday, provincial police chief, Abdul Rahman Rahimi said.
"After a siege and search operation, police captured a Taliban commander Mullah Jamaluddin in Burka district Tuesday morning," Rahimi told reporters in provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri.
The detained Jamaluddin had served as Taliban commander in Burka and adjoining areas and was responsible for organizing suicide attacks, Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts and targeting security forces, the official in Baghlan added.
At least 27 Taliban insurgents have been killed by police during operations backed by Afghan army and ISAF, since Saturday, Afghan Interior Ministry confirmed in separate statements released here.
A day earlier on Monday, a joint Afghan and NATO-led forces killed an insurgent and detained two others in Dowlatabad district, Faryab province, ISAF said in a statement on Tuesday.
"The targeted leader is a Taliban commission chief and the Taliban's second-in-command in Jowzjan province. He is responsible for leveraging illegal taxes against villagers, orchestrating attacks on Afghan security force checkpoints, transporting supplies and weapons," ISAF statement said.
The latest operations took place in the wake of crashing a helicopter with the NATO-led ISAF force during a military operation in country's Wardak province with Maidan Shar as its capital, 35 km west of Kabul, on Aug. 6.
"Thirty-eight coalition members were killed on Aug. 6 when a coalition CH-47 crashed on a mission that targeted a Taliban leader in the Tangi Valley, Sayyidabad district, Wardak province," ISAF said in a statement released Monday.
The victims include 30 U.S. soldiers, a local interpreter and seven Afghan commandos, which virtually represents the highest number of the U.S. forces killed during a single event since the war on terror began in Afghanistan in October 2001.
Even though the Taliban outfit claimed responsibility for shooting down the chopper, ISAF spokesman Brigadier General Carsten Jacobson has rejected the claim, saying no sign has been detected.
"The incident as tragic as it was and its magnitude will have no influence on the conduct of operations," ISAF spokesman Brigadier General Carsten Jacobson told reporters at ISAF weekly press briefing here on Monday.
As part of exerting pressure on militants, Afghan and NATO forces during a security operation in Panjwai district, Kandahar province, on Monday detained two suspected Taliban insurgents, ISAF said in a press release on Tuesday.
It also stated that "a combined Afghan and Coalition security force detained numerous suspected insurgents during a security search for a Haqqani network facilitator in Terayzai district, Khost province, Monday. The Haqqani facilitator is heavily involved in the acquisition of roadside bomb making material and weapons, as well as coordinating the movement of these materials to fighters in the area."
"The campaign is going to continue, we will continue to relentlessly pursue the enemy in the fight that we are taking to them," ISAF spokesman Jacobson pointed out at the press conference on Monday.
