  • General Akhtar abdur rahman

General Akhtar Abdur Rahman Khan (Urdu: اختر عبد الرحمن) (b. 11 June 1924 – 17 August 1988), born in Peshawar, though his family came from Jalandhar, East Punjab, was a 4-star general in the Pakistan Army. He served as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee from 1987–1988 and as Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence from 1980-1987.

As DG of ISI General Akhtar masterminded the Afghan Jehad against the Soviet Union by supporting the Afghan Mujahideen and eventually managed to force the Soviets out of Afghanistan.

    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

NO WONDER PAKIS ARE SOME OF THE MOST DUMBED DOWN AND UTTERLY MISINFORMED PEOPLE.THEY THINK THY HAD CONTRIBUTION EXCEPT FOR STEALING UN AID TO REFUGEES AND WEAPONS MENT FOR MUJAHIDEEN.

A close aide of General Zia-ul-Haq, General Akhtar was thought to be the second most powerful man in the country during Zia's eleven-year dictatorship. He died in a mysterious plane crash that also killed Zia and many other top Pakistani generals heading the Soviet war in Afghanistan, as well as the US Ambassador to Pakistan Arnold Lewis Raphel. General Akhtar's sons are prominent politicians in Pakistan. Humayun Akhtar Khan has previously served as a Federal Minister and Haroon Akhtar Khan is currently a Senator.

    [edit] Military career

    [edit] Overview

After his Masters in Economics (1945) from the Government College, Lahore, General Akhtar joined the Army on 16 February 1947, before becoming Captain in 1949. Over the years, he gradually moved up the ranks and in 1971, as Major-General, he was made General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 12th Infantry Division, Murree. After nearly a decade as Major General, in 1979 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in addition to being appointed Director General of the ISI. During his seven year tenure, the ISI became one of the world's most powerful spy agencies. In 1987 at the pinnacle of his career, General Akhtar was promoted to the rank of a full General and was appointed Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. However, a year later he died in uniform in the plane crash that also killed General Zia.
[edit] Role in the Soviet–Afghan War

When the Soviet Union deployed its 40th Army in Afghanistan, many of General Zia's leading Army generals believed that Pakistan would be the Soviet Union's next target. They felt that because of Pakistan's strategic location and given the fact that it has warm water ports in the Arabian Sea, it could be a prime target for future invasion. Since the top military brass believed that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan threatened Pakistan's security, Pakistan's premier intelligence agency the ISI, headed by General Akhtar, started providing financial, military, and strategic assistance to the Afghan mujahideen. The ISI received billions of dollars in military assistance from the CIA and Saudi Arabia to train and command the Afghan rebels in a bid to defeat the Soviets. This covert operation was known as Operation Cyclone, and was executed to perfection as the CIA provided the money and weapons, the ISI trained and commanded the Afghan Mujahideen groups, and the Mujahideen conducted Guerilla warfare to ultimately force the Soviets to withdraw from Afghanistan and cripple the Soviet economy to such an extent that it led to the dismantling of the USSR as many Eastern European states which were formally part of the union gained independence after this war. General Akhtar is widely reckoned as the mastermind behind the victory due to the ISI's decisive role in the war.
    [edit] Death

On August 17, 1988 General Akhtar Abdul Rahman died in a mysterious plane crash which also killed the President of Pakistan General Zia-ul-Haq. General Akhtar and General Zia along with many other top Pakistani Army officials were earlier in Bahawalpur to witness a US M1 Abrams tank demonstration. After witnessing a failed demonstration in which the tank missed most of its targets, the Generals left Bahawalpur in a C-130 Hercules. Shortly after taking off, the control tower lost contact with the aircraft which began flying erratically and eventually nosedived and exploded on impact. The mysterious nature of the crash along with the fact that the aircraft carried so many high profile figures has led to numerous conspiracy theories. A board of inquiry was set up to investigate the crash and it concluded that the most probable cause of the crash was a criminal act of sabotage perpetrated in the aircraft. It also suggested that poisonous gases were released which incapacitated the passengers and crew, which would explain why no Mayday signal was given. It is widely believed that the CIA, KGB, or RAW as well as certain disgruntled officials within the Pakistan Army were involved.

He no doubt played a big role in kicking out Russia from Afghanistan. "As DG of ISI General Akhtar masterminded the Afghan Jehad against the Soviet Union by supporting the Afghan Mujahideen and eventually managed to force the Soviets out of Afghanistan."
He is called a silent soldier.

Gen akhtar used to take immense pride in his afghan ancestry

Yet he was a loyal mughal to the end

              Could he even speak pashto

Once again i warn my fellow pakhtanuh to not be decieved by those who claim kinship.

              Theie loyalty lies elsewhere

Inviting Russians first and now Indians to your land will not make you any loyal with your people.

I think ure confused. Im the Amir. Not a khalqi or karzai stooge

The point is clear. Many lar pakhtuns are the gen akhtar type. Us bar pakhtuns need to stop outreach to them and focus on our own selves

The only thing the other side has to offer us are naseerullah babar and gen akhtar. Pashtuns of convinience. The only relationship tey want with us is one of subservience to ghq

You better get rid of Russian and Indian and now American Ideologies and their labels. and give up to their loyalties, we will be one no doubt. But these three forces are big hurdles in our unity. But unfortunately your love for India is more than the love for Pukhtuns. That is not acceptable to us.

what the hell are you talking about, you must b e drinking too much paki coolaid.
Afghanistan is the only country untouched by any of these ideologies and still are undefeated.

how can you help us who has been under the british raj and nurtured for more than a hundred years?

Love for India? well maybe if you are living in the paki Box where India is used as an excuse.there is more love in pakistan fro India than in Afghanistan, pak and india are matter of fact the same with the same culture ont he other hand we afghans have nothing in common with Indians except we have ruled them.

btw before thinking of talking about unity you should clean up the corruption in Pukhtunkhwa done by the british system and lets not even start about whole of pakistan and the historical accurency of this nation.

pakis were the ones to steal the aid money by the UN to the Afghan refugees and they also stole fromt he arms destined for mujahideen.

this guy is a fony such as most of pakistanis who try to take pride in someone elses deeds while themselves being washed out.

If pakistan drove the russians out,who drove the british out in the Anglo wars?
                          who helped America in Afghanistan?

If Afghanistan has been untouched by these ideologies then who were inviting Russians into Afghanistan in 70s ? Who are supporting the Americans in Afghanistan ? I think there are black sheep in Afghanistan itself. First get rid of them, then talk about others. If you consider Pakistan as your enemy then why are you complaining about your enemy LOL. Your enemy's job is to destroy you. Your emphesize should be the people inside Afghanistan.
Like, there are so many people in Pakistan who always bark on America and others, i tell them why are barking on them, they are you enemy and their job is to destroy you. You should first kick out those who are agents of America and work for them whether they are in army, in govt, in beaurocracy or in any other department. whether he gillani, zardari, or kyani.
The same rule is for you.
You are talking about the corruption in pukhtunkhwa so you should know that govt in pukhtunkhwa is of ANP who took vote in the name of pukhtuns and now is the right hand of ISI humiliating pukhtuns, toruring pukhtuns and killing pukhtuns, you have seen so many videos here, behind those army men, anp is standing and encouraging army men to torture them and kill them and humiliate them. your ideology and theirs' is the same but on the ground there is no good for pukhtuns in real. just crying and shouting and dancing.

In the last part of your post you accepted that Russians were kicked out with the help of Pakistan. Thats good.
and yes Pakistan helped Americans in war against Afghanistan in 2001.
That is the reason I am against pak army and pak ISI. You can't imagine how much i hate them.

america is supported by the same people who help russians invite themselves into Afghanistan.
If there are black sheep in Afghanistan(which is true)than the whole of Pakistan is black sheep since you have been created by the british raj and brought up by them in their system.
i dont get your point about Pakistan enemy etc,Pakistan is not so much destructive to Afghanistan than it is to Pukhtunkhwa so Pakistan is your enemy even more but you still dont understand.
the same way you think Pakistan defeated Russians which is totally laughable.

Like, there are so many people in Pakistan who always bark on America and others, i tell them why are barking on them, they are you enemy and their job is to destroy you. So according to you exposing crimes is braking?
you cant compare Pakistan with afghanistan when speakign about agents etc.
Pakistan has been an agent and was created by the master of these agents and isi itsel was created by the brits and the head has been brit for many years.
how are you going to kick out the agent ones when all fo your presidents along with almost all of your politicians have been agents for the last 60 years.

I see you always blame things on ANP or TTP(both pukhtun)while you are defending the very fabric of Pakistan.
remember what ANP has become is what you asked for which is being a paki flag waver.
Your problem is that you still need to understand the situation here.
its not ANP who is standing there it is people such as the one in your avatar who is part fo the design.
You are just using ANP to cover for the real perpetrators and blame it on Pashtuns afterall.

In the last part of your post you accepted that Russians were kicked out with the help of Pakistan. Thats good.

Yeah they helped by helping themselves with the much needed help for the Afghan refugees and stealing weapons destined for the fighters and last but not least stealing the Afghan planes which came in with the pilots who deserted.

i can imagine you hate ANP more than "pak" army and isi.

what do you think of TTP?
