PressTV - US soldier killed in west Afghanistan
An American soldier has been killed in western Afghanistan as foreign forces face a climbing number of deadly attacks in the war-ravaged country.
"One United States Forces-Afghanistan service member was killed on June 7 in western Afghanistan during an operation," a press release issued by the US military on Thursday said, quoted by Xinhua news agency.
The US military has lost at least 1, 614 soldiers in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan began in October 2001.
At least 236 foreign troops have so far been killed in Afghanistan this year.
Last year, nonetheless, remains the deadliest year so far for foreign military casualties with a death toll of 711. The number eclipsed the previous record of 521, set in 2009.
Hundreds of civilians have also been killed in US-led airstrikes and ground operations in various parts of Afghanistan over the past few months, with Afghans becoming increasingly outraged over the seemingly endless number of deadly assaults.
The growing death toll of Afghan civilians as a result of NATO and US military operations in the country has fueled tensions between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his Western allies.
