Well to be Honest as an Afghan nationalist I do somewhat agree with Massud the fact that today if he was alive he definitely would of condemned American invasion, where as his counter parts are pro-American. You guys maybe too young for this but many of those pro-Massud believe that was Fahim who killed Massud and now some rise questions on Dr. Abdullah USA's favorite northern Alliance.
In my whole live-time I found no such evidence that proves Massud was an anti-Afghan, Ghali or any kind of character that would actually damage Afghan image. In fact I have never seen any interviews or any proven article/documents referring to himself as an Tajik. Or a Tajik nationalist with attentions of dividing Afghanistan for the sack of 7-8% of Tajiks.
As many Afghans would agree that yes Massud did had stain blood on his shirt, like any commanders of 1980s, but at least we agree that if his men fought against Taliban and simply because Taliban were 95% Pashtu speakers and maybe 5% Arab or other foreigners, that it doesn't mean his war was against Pashtu speakers, and nor he was a lingumastic person to believe that his language and his mother-tongue vs superior to native tongue pashtu. After all he too had supporters from many Afghan tribes or (Pashtuns), perhaps I shell say that now days due to spread and propaganda from non-Afghan immigrants, Ghalis and shias this number really dropped down. This was well said by his own brother Ahmed Zia who concluded that people have his name and anti-Taliban resistance into something disgusting that if Massoud was alive today he would of given the fight right away.
Indeed sadly but to a degree for a short term I too was anti-Massud perhaps because I was pro-Najeeb but there was no-one else that would of fought against anti-development. I know some-one very close family members who have worked with Massud for 17 years, and today he is the most Pashtun nationalist that I have ever meet, in fact he doesn't even like our family simply some of us don't even know how to say "Thank you" in Pashtu. Mention his name would not be a appropriate a) he is a family memeber, b) because he is highly involved in Mellat Party.

How are your personal feelings towards Massud?
1. I am a totally anti-Massud. He was a Coward at his young age used by ISI he too was send to Madrasa along with other cowards such as Gulbudin to make a political party against ruling Mohammadzai and Daud Khan, later by CIA Aid to become a comander in charge of Panjsher province and later a trator soldout his Jihad in helping escape Russians, and then finally used by ISI once again to fight Gulbudin and Najeeb and changed sides many times. Finally lost much of people's support and lost much of the country to emerging ISI supported Taliban who at 2nd year controlled much of Afghanistan until 2001 covering almost 95%.
2. I always wished he was Pashtun because he had a big mouth, he was a person that Karzai can never be, some-one like him was indeed in need to our Pashtun society to defent us. Unfortunatly his backround is unknown, I would of respected him since he did spoke a little Pashtu but at the end he's death and because today much of his supporters are non-Pashtun, therefore leaves no room to like him.
3. He was the man of his time, a Hero with many personalities, to a Pashtun he was Pashtun, to a Tajikistani he was Tajik, to an Uzbek he was Uzbek and to an Hazara he was a monster. I admir Massud to a level far beyond understanding. All I have to say is that I wish he was alive.
4. He was Tajik, I don't know what Tajik means but seems from google search he was from Tajikistan, a chinki looking irano-Mongolid people who speak an Iranian language but mixed in origin as we pashtuns call mughuli. Hell to him and his Turkistan
