  • Global ranking: Pakistan billed to become 18th largest economy by 2050

Pakistan would become the 18th largest economy in the world by 2050 with a GDP of US$ 3.33 trillion, predicted economist Jim O’Neill.

Currently, Pakistan is the 44th largest economy in the world with a GDP of US$ 225.14 billion. This means that, if O’Neill’s projections are correct, Pakistan’s economy would grow 15 times in the next 35 years or so.

Economist Jim O’Neill, who coined the term BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India and China – as potential powerhouses of the world economy, has now identified the ‘Mint’ countries – Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey – as emerging economic giants, according to BBC.

In terms of wealth, Mexico and Turkey are at about the same level, earning annually about $10,000 per head. This compares with $3,500 per head in Indonesia and $1,500 per head in Nigeria, which is on a par with India. They are a bit behind Russia – $14,000 per head – and Brazil on $11,300, but still a bit ahead of China – $6,000 (£3,600).
Published in The Express Tribune, January 20th, 2014.

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has the potential to become 18th largest economy of world by 2050, leaving behind many strong economies, according to Jim O’Neill, a British economist.

Jim O’Neill is famous for coining the term BRIC - Brazil, Russia, India and China in 2001, analyzing their potential to become world’s powerful economies.
Now he has come up with a new term MINT - Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey, projecting their economies to see the strong growth in the coming decades.

According to his projections for 2050, Pakistan would become the 18th largest economy in the world by 2050 with a GDP of US$ 3.33 trillion (almost the same size as the current German economy).

Currently, Pakistan stands at the 44th largest economy in the world with a GDP of US$ 225.14 billion. This means that, if O’Neill’s projections are correct, Pakistan’s economy would grow 15 times in the next 35 years or so.
The BBC in its recently published article, termed it as the envy of many developed countries but also two of the BRIC countries, China and Russia. So, if Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey get their act together, some of them could match Chinese-style double-digit rates between 2003 and 2008.
Something else three of them share, which Mexican Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade Kuribrena pointed out, is that they all have geographical positions that should be an advantage as patterns of world trade change.
For example, Mexico is next door to the US, but also Latin America. Indonesia is in the heart of South-east Asia but also has deep connections with China. And Turkey is in both the West and East.

Nigeria is not really similar in this regard for now, partly because of Africa’s lack of development, but it could be in the future if African countries stop fighting and trade with each other.

This might, in fact be the basis for the MINT countries developing their own economic-political club just as the BRIC countries did - one of the biggest surprises of the whole BRIC thing.

This was something the charismatic Nigerian finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was keen to talk about: “We know our time will come,” she said. “We think they are missing something by not having us.”

Mexican Economist Meade Kuribrena went so far as to suggest that, as a group of four countries, the Mints have more in common than the Brics. “I am not sure about that, but it is an interesting idea,” he said.

Economically three of them - Mexico, Indonesia and Nigeria - are commodity producers and only Turkey isn’t. This contrasts with the BRIC countries where two - Brazil and Russia - are commodity producers and the other two - China and India - aren’t.

In terms of wealth, Mexico and Turkey are at about the same level, earning annually about $10,000 (6,100) per head. This compares with $3,500 (2,100) per head in Indonesia and $1,500 (900) per head in Nigeria, which is on a par with India. They are a bit behind Russia - $14,000 (8,500) per head - and Brazil on $11,300 (6,800), but still a bit ahead of China - $6,000 (3,600).
According to BBC, Indonesia’s challenges were big and the country needs more of a sense of commercial purpose beyond commodities, and has to improve its infrastructure.

In Turkey, visits to white goods manufacturer Beko and Turkish Airlines, the world’s fastest growing airline, definitely made me go “Wow”, and in Nigeria, I was saying it all the time.

Sorting out energy policy was seen in both Mexico and Nigeria as a top priority and each country has launched a major initiatives this year, which if implemented, will accelerate growth rates significantly.

In Indonesia, the fourth largest country in the world, leadership and infrastructure were the major challenges, though there were many more too. But challenges and opportunities sit side by side.

In one of Jakarta’s slum areas, Pluit, the land is sinking by 20cm per year because of over-extraction of water, but property prices elsewhere in the city are rocketing.

So, according to the BBC, the Mints can join the top 10 largest economies in the world, though it may take 30 years.
ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has the potential to become 18th largest economy of world by 2050, leaving behind many strong economies, according to Jim O’Neill, a

this is complete BS.I believe they had taken the 2010 IMF projection for which only 1.8-2.2% of average growth rate was taken as standard.

IMF projection are already beaten ever since 2010.As per IMF projection Pak GDP PPP by 2013 would be 465billion dollars while in reality Pak GDP PPP in 2013 is 569billion dollars and almost 618billion dollars now.

GDP nominal was to grow to 198billion dollars by 2015 in the projection while Pakistan Now stand at 248-259billion dollars and to cross 300billion dollars next year.or 600billion dollars in 2019 or 2020.to become a trillion dollars GDP by 2023.

Other than This Pakistan has the capacity to beat every single muslim country GDP including iran and Turkey except Indonesia.Indonesia,India, china and brazil are the future Top GDP's

        Indeed they are :P

anyway Under mushy the HSBC predicted GDP's had mentioned Pakistan to be on 11th by 2050 in 2004-05 when we were growing with more than 8%.

anyway the first quarter growth rate this year was 5.1% Highest after 2006 and onwards next year i believe we will grow beyond 6%.

If we Grow by average 7% in Real GDP term and than add the inflated Figure aswell.Pakistan can even Become 700-800billion dollars GDP by 2020 such as India or China's inflation boosted GDP figure.

by 2025 we can surpass Iran,To become the third biggest GDP in muslim countries after turkey and indonesia.

Beside this the Good news is population growth rate has also fallen below 1.5%.And i expect it to go further low by the end of this decade.though we need to bring it down to 0.8% so that our Population stabilizes at 210million

IMF estimates of GDP predictions upto 2060.

NOTE:Pakistan already has beaten the forecasts since they are based of 2010 average growth rate of 1.8-2.2% for Pakistan while even now we are growing beyond 5%

A four-part series on Radio Four focuses on the Mint countries - Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey - tipped as the next to assume their places at the high table of economic success. Jim O'Neill explains what they have in common.

Funny part is even egypt and nigeria are put above Pakistan.

If we clock 5trillion dollars by 2050 It means we would be under top 12th

that is a pathetic estimate based on pakistans potential, what good is the 18th largest economy if the per capita income is less than the 94th largest economy?
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

Per capita income ot 20500 dollars in 2050.

First of all these projections are all based ON 2010 IMF and WB Projections.I had read the Predictions in detail few years back and they clearly mentioned 1.8-2.2% as the average growth rate for Pakistan. But we know even now Pakistan this year first quarter achieved 5.1% and last AOA growth rate of 4.2%.

So PAkistan will be 18th largest by 2030-33 and probably among the top 12 by 2050 if the situation remain under 6%.If we grow by 7-8% or double digit growth rate such as under musharaf than Pakistan can become among the top 8 GDP's by 2050 replacing even turkey and only 2nd to indonesia.

We will most likely replace Iran within 2025.And if the sanctions are not removed than even in the 2020.

iranian GDP has shrunk to 396billion dollars. In 2000 their GDP was 4 times of us and now the difference is.This year june End 279-284billion dollars Pakistan and If iranian GDP also grow by -2% and the increasing Inflation than Iranian GDP would be more like 360-70billion dollars this year

Ofcourse increasing per capita income take alot of time.By 2050 India would be only 2nd to CHina in GDP with 24trillion which means as per the report 7times more GDP than Pakistan and they have the population 6.9times more than Pakistan.hence it means India GDP by 2050 will also be around 22-24k dollars despite that they will have the GDP even higher than USA.

I mean it took india 3 decades from 1981 to 2008 to replace Pakistan in per capita income which just had a differnece of 2times in 80's.

yes but indias overall gdp can make up for its relatively low gdp per capita, much like china today.
