I know Kabul is a multiethnic city that is traditionally Farsiwan. I'm assuming that the language of the street there is Farsi but what I'm curious about is whether people there also know Pashto. Basically if one could speak Pashto but not Farsi, would they be able to get around in Kabul?

It's pretty uncommon for an Afghan to be in Kabul and not be able to have some knowledge of both languages but supposing someone came to Kabul for the first time and from some rural village, people in Kabul would be able to assist him since they are able to speak both languages. I have seen primarily Urdu speaking Pakistanis speak basic Dari and Pashto in Kabul to get by. In Kabul you would see people who have Dari as their first language, speaking Pashto in such a manner that Pashto speakers would be put to shame.

Almost everyone knows Pashto, but all of them know Parsi...Originally posted by Traveller View PostI know Kabul is a multiethnic city that is traditionally Farsiwan. For me there was only one instance in which I had abandon speaking Pashto(because the Shopkeeper didn't knew Pashto)
Hence, it is very easy to get around in Kabul.
For cheap flats, you can find one in Makrorian area of Kabul..
I recommend at least learn basic Parsi/Dari..Last edited by salman47; 04-30-2017, 12:09 AM.

Yes short term renting is available!Originally posted by Baserka View Post^ Is short term renting available? What are the chances of finding furnished apartments in Kabul?
Finding apartments in Kabul might be a problem(as is in a lot of big cities), but most are fully furnished and nice apartments. I have lived in different parts of Kabul(Makroriyan, Shahray No, City center area etc..)
I would recommend Makroriyan because it is a very nice residential area.
P.S. Kabul have Electricity 24/7

Most residents of Kabul are Tajiks and Hazara's. Pashtuns are concentrated in the East.
You won't find any Kabuli who can't speak Farsi. But many of them can't speak Pashto. They might understand what you are saying but they can't speak in Pashto.Originally posted by FirdousiNever talk with Afghans about politics. Do you mean in the east of the city? How do you think a Pakistani Pashtun would fare there?Originally posted by Shamlawar Khurasani View PostMost residents of Kabul are Tajiks and Hazara's. Pashtuns are concentrated in the East.

East side of Kabul city. Not well. People hate Pakistanis in Kabul. Especially the Tajiks.Originally posted by Traveller View PostDo you mean in the east of the city? This is actually something few Pakistanis, including (especially?) pashtuns, realize. Although more are becoming aware of it, the sad fact is that Afghanistan doesn't really occupy anyone's minds. I know it sounds condescending, but it's true. Unless there's firing at the border or some deportation ****, it's not something most think about.Originally posted by Shamlawar Khurasani View PostEast side of Kabul city. Not well. I must admit that while I was aware of the hatred and animosity, by Afghans towards Pakistanis, to a certain extent... I had no idea it was that deep. I'm also aware that Kabul is barely Pashtun (25%?). I'm willing to bet Islamabad is more Pashtun than Kabul.Last edited by Elite Pakhtun; 05-19-2017, 12:37 AM.

You would definitely get by with just Pashto. Most non Pashtun kabulis understand Pashto and can speak just enough to get their point across.Originally posted by Traveller View PostI know Kabul is a multiethnic city that is traditionally Farsiwan. The hatred is reserved mainly for ISI/Army and those who will justify all their actions. There is no hate for common Pakistanis with few exceptions.Originally posted by Elite Pakhtun View PostThis is actually something few Pakistanis, including (especially?) pashtuns, realize. I have been to islamabad and its an indic city through and through. Even if there are Pashtuns there, they will get assimilated to the indic culture of the city in the future. Kabul is definitely more Pashtun than Islamabad as you will find symbols of Pashtuns all around the city from street and area names to educational institutions and cultural influence. Ibn Batuta has mentioned 800 years ago about Pashtuns living in Kabul and many Kabulis who are classified as farsiwans persianized Pashtuns because Farsi has been the dominant language in this part of the world for a millennia.
