good thing you had enough money to pay for that expensive meal, or did you have to wash the dishes? $100 is at least a weeks living for me when i do my budget journeys to the east.
Morocco seems like a nice place to visit.

Tor Khan lala, i am always looking forward to your posts =)

No fish meal, but lots of kebabs, grills and homous. And their bread is humongous! I really like Istanbul; definitely one of my faves.

Now, I'm going to sound indulgent Faye, we happened to be staying at the Al Bostan (i.e. one of the two most expensive paces in Muscat) with its own stretch of private beach. You know what happens, last night before you are about to fly out, you've handed in the hire car to the concierge and you decide to eat in. The thing is, the way they count money in Oman is not the way I am used to. For example 1000 Baisa make 1 Omani Riyal. In most places its a 100 of penny coin units, in Oman its 1000. So whilst you dividing everything by 10 or multiplying by the same, you are also trying to reconvert back to the currency you know. It's later you realise that biryani in a five star hotel has a five star price.

Morocco is great. It is just like it is in the movies, busy, noisy etc. And you've got to take a tanga ride (horse and carriage) in Marrakech on a summer's evening and go through the arches in old city. Pay the 'driver' again when he returns you to the spot where he picked you up for an extra hour and you might get the second hour cheaper.

I wouldn't go to or take the family to see a belly dance show - moral objection, but I must say that in Marrakech they have these electronic dervishes and they spin a lot faster than the Turkish ones (I prefer the music and style etc. for these ones and they touch me in deeper way). Anyway the Moroccan dervishes spin like there's no tomorrow and do these incredible tricks with baskets and then the skirt thing of their costume becomes a disco cloak and then their entire suit lights up and then keep on spinning for about 30 minutes non-stop with their Moroccan dance-rai music. Amazing street entertainment.

tor_khan, i thought the dervish trance and spinning was a spiritual practice. it is sad if it is being used as tourist entertainment.

Pretty much ANYTHING can be turned into a tourist attraction. Commercialism is very persuasive.

Hajj and Umrah, you know, have their expensive "tourisity" bits - a good example is car hire and taxis - shockingly expensive for the most shortest of journeys. Remember Hajj and Umrah they are probably the greatest spiritual journey many Muslims will take.

Thought I would revive this thread since it seems to be an interesting topic.

At the moment, Cairo is in the lead.

I went to Cairo more than once , Delhi , Damascus (lived there for around 2 years).
Also went to Turkey which I don't remember 'cause I was very small .
So I voted for Marrakesh, especially that it's not very far from Libya .

Marrakesh. I've been there few times. One of the best places I've ever been. Morocco is a lovely country with the most beautiful-blue sky.
And now I even use perfumes "Le Maroc Pour Elle" or "L'Air du Dessert Maroccain"
