they suck agriculture wise so they have to depend on something and building flashy towers seem to be the only means through which they can get tourists to come and spend their money so good for them.

thats true, also arabs love their gold and jewelery aswell. there are thousands and thousands of gold and jewelery shops in Dubai and else where in the gulf:
