who cares for what they were or what they were supposed to be. forget the rest, at the very least they didn't maintain their reputation. their first concern should have been those who were misrepresenting them. they didn't bother to deal with that. trust from the people of afghanistan is hard to attain but since when did any political system start depending on that in order to make a successful comeback in afghanistan? long live thieves and murderers.

I am very disappointed with a member like shlombay who is taking side of party.

Non of the parties were good.. for me each and every warlord, jihadi and talitub is equal to a killer. They killed Us. Its true that for me all Afghans are the same.. from hazara to tajik and pashtun.. they are all my Afghans and if someone kills them specially by orders of ISI then there is no chance of praising their group.

From 7 donkeys to talitubis and recent government officials (most of whom are old warlords) are all killers.
My land my soil was destroyed by these people.

      a question from shlombay

brother.. have u been to Afghanistan?
how many times did u visit Afghanistan during war times?
which areas of Afghanistan did u visit?
Have you ever seen someone killing someone else in front of ur eyes?
Do you believe what media says?
Do you support those people who were supported by panjabiz?
Do you want panjabiz to rule Afghansitan?

Its clear that there are several types of warriors engaged in war in Afghanistan and might be 10% of them are good people but many of them are still foreigners from Arab gulf to chichnya and uzbekistan, tajikistan, pakistan, turkey and many other countries. How can those people save our izzat ? have you heard of this pakistani panjabi talib who rapped a pashtun girl in ghazni? are u even aware of this story?
The story goes back to 1999 when a group of panjabi taliban in gilan area of ghazni intered a home of pashtoons and forced a girl's father to give her daughter's hand to this panjabi. The father refused and after somedays she was taken by force and was forced to marry this panjabi guy. The girl is still living in Gilan with her family caz the dude died like a dog. Where was ur so called brave soldiers to save her Izat? I am talking about izat of a pashton woman not someone else .
How many of your pashton women were sold to panjabiz and others in Pakistan from 1996 to 2001? can you count? who sold them? how were they sold and who let them to be sold?

My brother its time not to take sides but refuse to support all those who are against our people. Non of these groups are pro afghanistan or pro pashtoons.. all of them are there for their own Fayda.

do you realize that people sitting in Afghanistan read ur comments right now. You are in NY sitting in a peaceful shelter and might never want to move to Afghanistan but dont decide the future of our people who are not even getting a loaf of bread to eat. Dont suggest the killers to be their lords. I will kiss ur hands and forhead if I see you in Kabul helping the poor people , feeling their wounds, and helping them to have a bright future because we have one hope and thats from our Young generation specially those who are living outside Afghanistan.
Lets finish the hatred in our hearts and work together for a peaceful free Afghansitan with no involvement of foreigners specially Paki panjabis. They have already taken our KP from us and we dont want them to take the rest of Pashtoon areas.

i will wait for ur answers

That is a fairy tale... I am sure there are many who will say the same thing of Pakhtuns raping etc. Taliban are the illegitimate children of ISI and US. They were created and funded by the dollars of the Kuffar to spread Islam

No one wants the Talibs, in reality even the Talibs don't want talibs.... The only reason why people want talks with them is because any development in the country that happens is destroyed by them. Afghanistan takes one step forward and the talibs move them back two steps. We have seen 11 years of Talib terror, I would like someone here to please let me know what development happened in the country during those terrible years?

A comment on the bachabaazi and its banning by the Talibs? I would be greatly interested to know if its true because I saw a documentry about this a couple of month ago and made me sick to my stomach.... were drugs and the cultivation of Opium banned too?

The Taliban formed to defend the honor of Pashtuns. Pashto was introduced again after Masood and his comrades had declared Afghanistan as being yash kishwar farsizaban. Taliban were formed to bring peace to Afghanistan in the war torn country. That is why recent estimates show 80 percent of the Afghan population want the govt to talk to Taliban and even today they have shadow governors that get the job done. They were innocent Pashtuns. They were like your father and my father who were just fed up with other ethnic groups massacring us and they picked up their machinery, changed the capital to Kandahar and said our language is Pashto, and we are Pashtuns. The rest is history.

As I said before, there isn't a second opinion about the wrong policies Taleban adopted and their consequences for Afghanistan/the region especially Pashtuns (ultimately), the question is, did all this happen in vacuum and were the Taleban born at some kind of ponit of singularity beyond which nothing is known or existed?

Why are only Talebans judged from the standpoint of pure morality without any regard to the political and social realities of that time and isolated from the events that preceded them? Why is not the rise of Taleban contextualised by taking into account the role of all other actors, including Americans, ISI/Pak, Northern Alliance, etc. that abeted the Taleban emegence? Why are only Pashtuns singled out as the main culprits in the brutal drama that was played in Afghanistan since the Russian invasion?

Second, attempts are made to portray Taleban as a kind of Pashtun neo-Nazi movement. If that is true, where are the credible sources that prove/indicate the existance of concentration camps, mass-graves, genocidal killings, cases of ethnic cleansing, depopulation plans, etc. during Taleban era? These are usually the things that are normally associated with the emergence and agenda of ethno-fascist movements.

I am quite certain that had Taleban born two or three decades back, Americans and other capitalist countries would be very happy to have found a force to bleed and destalise USSR with. They would then have painted Taleban as a God-sent force of highest moral standards defending the free world against the invasion of godless communists. They would also have invented/found reasons to justify the oft-mentioned oppression of minorities at the hands of the Taleban (This is what they did when Pakistanis committed genocide of Bangalis or Turks massacred Kurds. Have we heard anything about Turks massacre of Kurds from the so-called Free World?). NA and its sympathizers naturally are inflating/magnifying the information related to the atrocious acts of Taleban to find allies and strengthen their position vis-a-vis Pashtuns.

This doesn't mean Pashtuns shouldn't be self-critical or be supporting/justifying extremism but they don't need to plunge into a permanent state of national guilt and be always on the back-foot politically due to Taleban. The world needs to be reminded that Taleban neither were the conscious choice of Pashtun majority nor Pashtuns had the sole role in creating the conditions that facilitated their rise.

No they didn't, if a Taliban supporter wanted to marry a girl then he no matter would. This was a very popular practice in places like Paktia, Khost, Ghazni and even my village Laghman. If a woman tried to escape then her husband got advice to make her pregnant so she doesn't leave, this was their justice. Taliban was there only for men, that's why it's only Pukhtoon men eager for their return.

How much the Taleban card/label has been played against Pashtuns can be gauged from the Mahajar-Pashtun rivalry in Karachi. Any Pashtun speaking for the rights of Pashtuns is labelled Taleban by MQM and Mahajar-controlled media so much so that they didn't even spare ANP with long and continuing struggle for liberal-secular ideals. I think the situation is not different in Afghanistan generally and in the north of Afghanistan in particular having Pashtuns as a minority where any Pashtun standing for Pashtuns can be called a Taleb and politically marginalized.

It is true that the Taleban phemonen unfortuantely happened in Pashtuns and not admiting it would be a kind of dishonesty and a self-damaging attitude, the habit of some Pashtuns to permanently link Taleban with Pashtuns and depict Talebanism as some sort of a replay of Pashtuns' historical role, would further harm Pashtuns. There are many Pashtuns living in awe of non-Pashtun cultures and seeking proximity with non-Pashtuns or articulating their personal notions of humanism, patriotism, etc. doing this but that is not entirely right.

Although, it is a complex issue caution must be taken while mentioning it. But whatever we do, sovereignty is the only way we can break all the chains put around us.

Everyone loves their warlords, the Taajiks love their Ahmed Shah, the Uzbeks love their Dostum, and the Hazaras love their own. In case of the Pukhtoons, if they dare love Hekmatyaar or Mullah Omar, they are loving "terrorists". Talk about double-standards.

Were the Taliban good or bad? ...the opinion is divided...though last I checked many people in Afghanistan including many non-Pukhtoons boosted of how there was little corruption during the Taliban time, no bribes, no looting...people could literally leave their shops open and go to pray come back to find everything as they left it....and the stories of Punjaabis raping Pukhtoon women...wow...I remember stories of Taliban commanders chasing Paki jihadis out of Hazara areas when they were caught raping Shia women. I heard stories of Talibs fighting Arabs when they heard that the Arabs were harassing NGO's and Western women for not covering. I heard stories of Talibs freeing girls and boys from the sex slavery of various warlords.

Good and bad existed amongst them all though since it is not politically convenient, Pukhtoon defeatists and non-Pukhtoon propagandistic foreign tools super impose the bad deeds of the Talibs, while super imposing the good of the likes of Norther Alliance. Politics? I guess so.

The Taliban were no angels, but they were far from demons. The war between the Talibs and Northern Alliance wasn't prolonged by the Talibs, but the miscalculated and misplaced hopes and ambitions of the Taajiks and Uzbeks who actually believed that they can subdue this group of "students" and emerge victorious over the Afghan state as rulers. The Taliban had offered talks on more than one occasion, on one such occasion Dostum agreed, later tricked the Taliban which resulted in their massacre...I believe in Mazar..that made things worse. In the end it had gotten to the point that NA realized that it is now futile to even make peace, or deal with the Talibs since they had lost everything. They were left with what was considered 5% of the country. Nor did the Talibs bothered to make deals at that point, why would they?

The folly of the NA was that they went up against an entity that wasn't monolithic (they believed that it was though). Rather it was composed of various factions that gathered much of their strength from the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan. It was their fault, the NA, to even dream of defeating, or subduing the ambitions of this ethnic group which they foolishly confined to the Taliban movement. Was Hekmatyar a Talib? Nope. But he understood what the Talib winnings meant for him.

The rest about rape, education, women, human rights, girls rights, boy rights, homosexual rights, apostate rights, all is the same old bullshyt. The NA are as religious and intolerant of all of that as the Taliban were and are. Only a fool will think otherwise. Look at Herat, look at Mazar, look what happened to the reporters in Kabul, look at the interference with Afghan media, look at the restrictions on women in institutions and politics...all the same. THEY ARE ALL MUJAHADEEN! Get it? They all slept with the Arabs, Pakistanis, ISI, CIA etc.

In the end, I rather place my money on my blood, my people, as it is thicker than water. For the defeatists, remember this, no Paki, Indian, Parsiwan, or any other foreigner will shed his blood or tear over you....through out history, we have learned, that the only people that have come to our rescue, happened to be our own flesh and blood..no matter how backward, religious, or conservative. Our people are truly independent, and why Taliban refused to recognize the Durand line after being pressed by the Pakistani state.

I don't agree with what the Taliban do or stand for, or the way they do things....but I understand. If I as a Pukhtoon don't, who will? Who can understand the complexities of the Pukhtoon mind, his culture and region...remember when they ridicule Talibs, they don't isolate just this particular group, they come down on all Pukhtoons...like the Pukhtoon women, men, elderly, and children in the North who suffered greatly after the US invasion. Many of them are still being held as slaves and concubines. Like the innocent Pukhtoons bombed by drones sleeping in their homes, like the innocent Pukhtoons killed in Karachi while going about their business. ALL IN THE NAME OF TALIBAN!

Yes, it is wrong to associate Pukhtoon nationalism to the Taliban, but it is also wrong to not differentiate between Pukhtoon nationalism and Talibanism. We can't let our foes, historical and regional, malign our national aspirations as TALIBANISM, and like defeatists, agree to it. There is no black and white here, and reality is far more complex then it is made out to be.

Don't be stupid, we can't afford to.

... good luck folks.. keep your heads up!

It goes both ways buddy. Even Pukhtoons, Uzbeks and Hazaras called Massoud a traitor and thus his followers. Even Mazari was being called a traitor thus his Hazara followers. Nonetheless, love for each and every single one of them needs to fade away but since that's not possible, least we can do keep it to ourselves.

I personally remember this, and I also remember how because none had money they wouldn't even visit many shops. Basically, there wasn't much to loot and those who did possess loads of money managed to flee to a village far away from big cities.

For Pukhtoons, after Mujahideen Hizbs, Northern Alliance in north in 2001 were biggest monsters. Ever. We can't speak for the entire nation as in who were demons for them, and who were angels for them.

Though you did mention Mazar and Herat, but very clearly never visited. Both cities got one of the best universities, more women in those areas join women-right organisations, training for widows and orphaned females is offered in those areas and what not. Women even started to work. In fact, even Jalalabad is starting to follow the same direction. In Mazar even change of religion became legal. I am actually very surprised you even thought of making any such comparison, really.

As in for the rest of your comments regarding showing understand for the Taliban, we will keep suffering like this. I guess people are right when they say even in Pakhtunkhwa Taliban found their way because 'their fellow Pukhtoons' couldn't resist giving them shelter. We have already seen so many traitors, are we seriously tempting to endure one more for the sake of blood? Are we?

We need to let go of this idea of "Tajik" lies and "Hazara" propaganda. Call a spade a spade whether it's in favor of whatever you associate yourself with or not.

This whole notion of supporting a specific sort of government based on the leaders ethnicity is full on BS. It is not ok for Tajiks/whoever to support Ahmad Shah Massoud solely based on the fact that he was Tajek, neither is it ok for Pashtuns to support Taliban just because they were not Tajek or because they supposedly were oh-so-Pashtun and promoted Pashtunwali or whatever.

If you find yourself feeling alien towards your fellow country men, you're doing something essentially wrong.
                    Tajiks all spread propaganda?
They're all out to rape our women and kidnap our kids?
They hate us and everything that is associated with us?
They are psychopaths that murder people for the hell of it without a particular reason?
Do they not love Afghanistan the way you do? Dagha yawazi stasu da Nika Watan day, da duy hetz nadai? Have they not sacrificed just as much as you if not more for this country that your making politics for and yet feel so distant from?

Quit being so paranoid and quit being so self righteous. It's not like Taliban do not have blood on their hands, it's not like Taliban did not massacre people, it's not like they weren't unjust.
Supporting someone based on factors he/she has no control over means you have no other standards to measure people by and no other principles to value them for.

The whole point of this thread was, were the Taleban as evil as they have been propagated/projected to be and how just it is to extend sins of one group or another and paste it on the whole Pashtun nation making them suffer from an acute sense of alienation and political isolation --- rather have them bear the practical consequences of that propaganda...

The main point is, is there any will in all people for collective responsibility for what has happened and to forget and forgive alongside a workable, realistic arrangement/formula for power-sharing and cultural expression.

Just using morally-loaded terms and language cannot resolve political issues.

                              Shayesta,

It goes both ways buddy. Even Pukhtoons, Uzbeks and Hazaras called Massoud a traitor and thus his followers. Even Mazari was being called a traitor thus his Hazara followers. Nonetheless, love for each and every single one of them needs to fade away but since that's not possible, least we can do keep it to ourselves.
That’s the point, everyone was a monster, yet Pukhtoons are forced to confront and apologize for theirs. Pukhtoons are made out to be the fascist demons that the political enemies of the Pukhtoons paint them to be. You, as a Pukhtoonah, don’t help in this regard. Rather unknowingly strengthen the case of these non-Pukhtoons by absolutely rejecting any good or generosity that might have been rendered by Pukhtoons during the pre/post war…even by groups such as the Taliban.

You leave me puzzled, because I can’t really tell where you are coming from. Is it you speaking as a humanistic individual, or your personal relations with these Taajiks that cloud your mind? I can't help but think that way. I don’t want to get personal, but your emotional attachment to Taajiks can’t be ignored when it comes to some of your blatant statements. The same way, when we have Pukhtoons of Pakistan who defend Punjaabis, or Pakistaniyat, it is mostly due to their personal ties and relations with them that cloud their judgments. They malign any Pukhtoon response or sentiment, even the non-violent peaceful ones like Baacha Khan as dubious closet Hindus.

I don’t wish to demonize Taajiks, Uzbeks, Hazaras, and Parsiwaans. I am a Muslim, and as a Muslim, racism isn’t tolerated, neither is nationalism that is based on fascist ideas. Though, this is about justice and rights (haq), and the state of Afghanistan is within the legal rights of the Pukhtoons. Any attempt by a group or people that try to impose their will on Afghanistan while undermining the majority of the Afghan nation, based on whom this state was founded, is illegal and morally wrong. After the Soviets withdrawal many minorities considered the state for their taking. Why wouldn't they? They were armed to the teeth, they had men, and power. The Parsiwan initially counted on the Pakistanis, but when they realized that Pakis are more likely to support Pukhtoon centric groups like Hekmatyaars, all love for Pakis was lost. India became the natural alternative.

The Taliban were anything but a fascist nationalist movement. They were a religious movement, but even then the nationalist Taajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks despised them for one fact only, they were mostly comprised from Pukhtoon regions and viewed as a Pukhtoon entity. Though the Taliban themselves claimed Islam as their motivating and driving factor, not Pukhoton nationalism. Even then, as an Islamic entity, it wasn’t enough for the Taajiks and Uzbeks to accept the Talibans as brothers in deen. They had their own ethnic and national interests in mind that came before Islamic interests. I can understand Hazaras objections to the Talibs, they were Shia, but why did the Sunni Taajiks/Uzbeks disprove the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan under a Pukhtoon amir-ul-momeenin? There were Tajiks and Uzbeks from the countries of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan midst the Talibs....even today. So what if they were coming from the South, weren’t they establishing an Islamic state in which they could have played a major role...a role they were offered? But that wasn’t enough....They wanted their own pie. One might argue that the "evil Pakis" was the factor, but we know that both Rabbani and Masood were sleeping with Islamabad before all of this. In fact Zaid Hamid, a staunch Pakistani analyst, spent most of his time during Soviet/Afghan war with his fellow ethnic Taajik Masood and the Northern Alliance.

After the invasion of Afghanistan and the subsequent fall of the Taliban from Kabul the Taajiks and their coalition walked out of the Loy Jirga 3 times, what was it? Pukhto being declared as the national language. The national anthem being in Pukhto, and a Pukhtoon being recognized as the leader of the government. They did many other things, one of them was pissing on the poster of Ahmed Shah Baba in Kabul stadium...what was the common dominator here...Taliban? Nope. It was Pukhtoonyat.

All that cozy love you feel from fellow Taajiks in Afghanistan towards Pukhtoons now, this Pukhtoon friendly Afghanistan you find today...that is thanks to one man, and that man is Zalmay Khalilzad. If it wasn’t for his position in American politics, you wouldn’t have the Pukhtoon friendly Afghanistan where Pukhtoons and Pukhto are tolerated by the so gracious and innocent Parsiwan. Without American support they couldn’t move, and American support was in the hands Zalmay Khalilzad, against whom the Parsiwan did everything possible to weaken is resolve. His muscling over the Northern Alliance allowed the Pukhtoons in the US backed government in Afghanistan to gain key positions that balanced things out. It has nothing to do with the benevolence of the Parsiwan/Taajiks towards their fellow Afghan brethren. He was the face of the American policy, and thank goodness for you, he was a Pukhtoon.

                              Mayana,

Do all Taajiks spread propaganda? No! But most people that are busy spreading propaganda against Pukhtoons equating them to pedophiles, barbarians, terrorists, Jews, Pakis, Dhal khors, slaves of Arabs, not REAL ARYANS, pests etc. happen to be Taajiks.

They're all out to rape our women and kidnap our kids? No! But those that did after the fall of the Taliban, and in some cases still do, are Taajiks. Some of them upload pornographic material of Pukhtoon girls, like the recent incident involving a girl from Quetta on sites like YouTube to shame and to humiliate Pukhtoons.

They hate us and everything that is associated with us? No, not all of them, but their best and brightest consider Pukhtoon subhuman degenerates with no culture or class. Pashtun-i-koon or Afghan-e-ghoul as they put it.

They are psychopaths that murder people for the hell of it without a particular reason? No not all of them. But those that do, have their reasons, for example, to undermine Pukhtoon power in Afghanistan.

Do they not love Afghanistan the way you do? Most of them love Afghanistan, especially one where the Pukhtoon question no longer applies. Many of them would like to merge it with Watan Iran, as part of the province of Khorasan.

Just type Pashto, Pashtun, Pukhto and Pukhtoon in YouTube to see the love of Taajiks and Parsiwan for you. Pashto/Pashtun is a now pornographic term over the internet, thanks to them. You are lucky that there are some Pukhtoons out there who are confronting their disinformation and malicious campaigns over the internet and sites like Wikipedia. Otherwise, many foreigners would have been lead to believe that Pashto means ASS and Pashtun mean VIGINA, which they actually did try to promote over Wiki Words, Wiki Quotes and other online dictionaries.

Some of you are really young, 10 years ago many of you were what....14, 15, or even younger???? It's easier to wake up to a happy jolly dandy world. But us old timers remember things differently. Many of us, have fought for whatever little pride or dignity you enjoy today when it comes to your ethnicity. The world is not all sugar and candy. Our concerns are based on legitimate reasons.

Do Pukhtoon indulge in all of the above against Taajiks, Uzbeks, Punjaabis or any other group in such an organized fashion? Nope. We have Pukhto, that naturally conditions us to stand on a higher moral ground when it comes to these things. One can consider it a weakness, but I say it is our strength, that won't allow us to stoop that low. Hope you understand some of my concerns now. I wish that the world was all rosy and tree huggy...humanity and equal rights...and gosh....save the cute dolphins.

Unfortunately that's not how the world works.

this why u should never try as if u can read our minds. even Pashtuns claim in name of Taleban they defeated Russians while even Tajeks were part of mujahedin but yet we 're so called sold outs. even those seven mujahedin groups were foreign slaves, all of them, yet Taleban supporters don't look at themselves first before calling others foreign puppets. 'n no we DID NOT reject Taliban 'cuz they were Muslims, otherwise we would 've sided Massood or even Dostum instead of cheering for Taleban to enter the country as we truly believed they might bring peace. but they weren't what we hoped for, not close to it either. I belong to Herat 'n u can even ask Pashtuns of Herat what Taliban did to minorities. Najibullah was Pashtun as well but still if some of us dispise then most of us appreciate his intelligence more than Pashtuns themselves. we were also supportive of Dawood Khan and defo Amanullah as well. its just Pashtuns who only accepted Kalakani as their president 'n that also as he tented to be more Muslim. our reason never had been ethnic, but today it is 'cuz proves how one should stick to his own blood.
